2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

Who should we pick 3rd overall (assuming Schaefer and Misa are gone)?

I'm not advocating picking Frondell. He's just not a good comparable to Zadina or Holtz.

That's probably the plan, but it takes two to tango and I wouldn't dip into futures to make it happen. I'd love to have our second pick bumped into the teens, hopefully there's a team there with a board that favors moving down. I'm struggling to see that team who needs quantity over quality, there, without an NHL player being attached.

Right now he reminds me of Ryan McLeod with better finishing and better edge work. McLeod was projected to play the power game, Nazar is developing the power game without it ever being projected. I don't remember a Hawks player with his speed that was so willing to work to the inside on the rush. He's so exciting.

If Eklund is an inch taller and 15 pounds heavier he is ranked the same or higher than Frondell no? The playmaking, transition game, and the skating are superior and Frondell's shooting advantage nullified by Eklund's ability and willingness to make plays around the net.

Bader tends to look at age and production more then anything else. which is useful but maybe does not tell the whole picture. Frank was only a pt per game player in his D+2 year in the NCAA typically that does not scream all star. and kailer did hit 20 G and 41 pts when he was 22-23. I think watching franks speed and tenacity that we do feel he is a 60-70 pts player probably better on the Wing long term.

Yeah I can see how Bader's model can be helpful but it also has its limitations. It doesn't account for different types of injuries where some are debilitating and others just shorten a season. It also only looks at production and not the kinds of game players have. There are certain things guys can do in Juniors that will never work in the NHL and Bader's model doesn't account for that at all. It only looks at size, league quality, and points. That's it.

EP ranks 17 year olds like Hockey is a video game. And so do many execs. Don't put your faith in the NHL brain trust just yet.

if he was considered Lundell he wouldn't be consensus top 5, so the market disagrees with this one exec

lundell is a solidly built 2 way 23 year old center that has 53% faceoff probably settles in as a 60 pt 2nd line 2 way center. He hits and plays Defense. that is a fair comp. would florida trade him for #3? no they would not. Barkov comps is crazy. are there 5 players worth more valued then baskov in the league. the only guy im sure would get more value is McDavid.

the optionality in the range of outcomes for Frondell might intrigue them for sure...maybe they see it as he ends up on Bedard's wing and can be a Drai type scorer with Bedard's exceptional playmaking, or they see another possibility that he ends up a Barkov/Kopitar type center and they can kick Bedard onto his wing and let him be a Kane/Kucherov type winger

Sure but Leon went 3 and Barkov went 2. These guys have to come from somewhere. We could easily get another Dach or Kakko but ya really dont know until they hit NHL ice.
 
Lundell was a slicker player than Frondell at draft age, all day long. That should tell you enough about that exec.

If they draft Frondell it's because they think he can grow into a little freight train. Take his stance, frame, puck protection & shot to that elite level in the coming years. You'd hope he could be the kind of guy that only does a couple things but you can't shut him down on those couple things. On a draft score sheet it doesn't add up, it's more about just reading those few tools hoping for a big projection. It sounds silly, but it's no sillier than expecting every kids soft skills to transfer like those who said Bedard's wrister alone would be good for 40+ his rookie year.
