I don't think it's a red flag.

He's the smartest player in the draft by a long shot. You don't fail with that kind of IQ.

But he'll be comparable to Dylan Strome, with a little more physicality.

That's a good player, just not the kind KD is looking for.

Martone is definitely more physical than Strome. That kid goes to the net, drops the gloves, hits, goes to the corners etc. Dylan rarely to ever did any of those in junior. Although I think Strome was the better offensive talent coming out than Martone.

SAN JOSE WINS! Alright boys, let’s keep up those positive vibes, we’re almost in last place!
Going to be a nailbiter. Look at the Remaining Strength of Schedule:

When you think about what KD has drafted, his focus on skating, speed, motor and some skill......Misa at #2 is the no-brainer. If the Hawks end up picking 3rd or 4th, then it gets interesting and I can see him going big....Martone or McQueen. I don't think he goes Euro with those slots.

Hopefully they go with brains also. Speed is nice but not everyone has to be like that. And I think Hawks has made some mistakes with focusing so much on speed in drafting. I wouldn´t rule out those Euro players as a option.

Let´s not forget that these young players do develop. You can get faster and better skater just like Ryan Donato did as a 28 old player. Scouts try to figure out how much these young players can develop and what is their ceiling and that is the hardest part of it. If they believe that Martone can become faster and better skater they might like him a lot.

I think Hagens would be a nice consolidation prize if we don't get Misa. Is this what
most of the board agrees with ?

Strengths

  • Skating, agility and edgework
  • Elite playmaking vision
  • High-end skill and creativity
  • Strong puck control and skills
  • Major threat off the rush

Under Construction- Improvements to Make

  • Size may put some teams off as a centre
  • Decision-making, forcing plays can hinder game at times
  • Regain scoring touch

We already know that Schaefer an Misa would be the first 2 rankings on the Hawks list of top 4..

However at #3or#4 should Hawks land in one of those spots after lotto I have Caleb Desnoyers at#3 but could still see KD risking the potential for Roger McQueen or Jake O'Brien because their ceilings coukd be higher ..With McQueen they need to do a medical risk assessment for injury history but the potential impact of a Big center at 6'5 with skill and physicality coukd be a risk they want to bet on..not for just what he is now bit what he could be 3-4 years out ..Given that he only played 18 regular season games in his draft season out so long with his injury, the scouts will be watching hid playoff performance for Brandon now closely ...Hard to know if hevhas yet had enough tone to shake off all the rust yet so that he can dominate in the payoffs...we shall see...and though hecalready has the sizevto pkay with the pros in the NHL now (as opposed to Drsnoyers or O'Brien who both aren't but lanky and need to add 15 to 20lbs of mass to their 170s frames ,tge fact McQueen missed so many games of devekopmentvtome should mean he needs next sesson back i juniors too...neithervof thse 3 are next year fixes for KD but will need more development .
But projecting 3-4 years McQueen coukd be 6"5 225 = a Draisaitl load for the opps to handle ..and that possible impact Big C is what all NHL teams drool over..
So I can see KD and the Hawks taking that risk of a short draft year viewing assessment time frame and considering where other rankibgs in a "consensus " put him in this draft.

In any case I cannot see the Hawks taking another undersized center (Hagens ...especislky considering Hagens did not have the imoact Celebrinibdid in his freshman season ...this despite Hagens pkayingvwith thec#1team inNCAA hockey and playing on thevtop linearity Leonardcamd Perraukt till mod January when Boston College mixed up their top 2lines and put Hagens with 2 other wingers...Still Hagens should have put up more points andespecially and more goals than he has...so given he sort of has blown his privileged situation witb BC ,I think his final rankibg should be falling..

With Desnoyers you know what you are getting..a very good all round 2 way center ...great compete level...good skater though he coukdcadd more explosion ifvhe adds more mass and gets stronger...that should happen with tinefir further development...goodvoace...good usevofbkibemates and playmaking...goid off puck habits ,a bit of physical edgevtjough with more weight on his frame that too could be better..Hevisxa mid volume shooter but a high accuracy and efficient shooter ..Good off tge rish and I transitions..greatcdefebsive ability to check and seal off exits and neutral zone attacks by the opos..Defense leading to offense etc...
There is so much to likebin his overall game and work habits.. Maybe not a top gunner ...but doesvhavexa 2 tiger and can pick corners..In short he seems a safe bet for at 2C ceiling but maybe not a top 10-15 inpoints leading #1 CENTER in the NHL but a solid top 10 -15 2C type projection driving a 2nd line ..maybe a Toews like 2 way 65 -70 pts and +25 kind of NHL impact once he enters the Show.

The offensive ceilings may be higher with McQueen and O'Brien.
I have noticed in recent games McQueen is dominating in faceoffs...but only a small sample...O'Brien is about 50% for the season ...Desnoyers was 58.3% for his regular season...
Misa I believe isxabovev53%..

Have to see what they all do in playoffs....but Schaefer Misa... then 1 of Drsnoyers McQueen Or O'Brien should fill out the 3-5 soits in a fival rabking..Hagens in my view has dropped out of a top 5 ...especially for a team like the Hawks with already 2 shrimps the top 6 and more shrimps coning ...gotta add sone 6'1 to 6'5 centers and wingers .

I liked him at the WJC´s. I see him as someone who would think the game like Bedard does. Being more of a playmaker they could become deadly combo at least in PP. I have no issue if Hawks pick him.

Yea I agree with this. I really think Hagens and Bedard can compliment each other really nicely. James seems to be able to enter the zone and carry the puck with a bit more speed than Bedard. Hagens can soften up the d a bit and look to create a little time and space for 98.

If the rumours online that Ryabkin isn't very coachable are true, the Hawks will have him on their DND list I would assume.
