HF Habs: 2025 NHL Draft: Part II

I think he's gone early. Big ass mobile RD...might even go top 5.
Anyone that thought Mrtka was gonna be available at 16, 17 hasn't been following the draft this year or generally any year

Big mobile RDs are always getting grabbed early, if the Habs want him they'll have to hope some team picking way earlier is willing to trade their pick and they will need to match their price

There's a whole bunch of players I would like in the first round as a Habs fan, but, strategically, I would try to convert my second round picks, my earliest second round pick and my two earliest 3rd round picks, or a 2ndr round pick from this year and a second round pick from next year into a late first rounder.

My targets would be Nesbitt, one of Hensler or Fiddler and Ryabkin.

I know I'm passing over Carter Bear and Justin Carbonneau, but those three make more sense to me, even though I love the two players I would be passing over if ever they are still available at 16th and 17th.

How one GM saw Nick Suzuki at the draft combine, you can say you completely whiffed

I see it now only as evidence a guy’s healthy or not. It has little correlation with ability to play hockey. Proof is seeing players throughout the years crushing a whole combine becoming borderline pros. Also Mario Lemieux couldn’t bench 155 points once at the combine and would smoke cigarettes between exercises.

Now look at this folks and analyze this dude and not just his f size.

Look at his:

Reach
Shot
Time and space reaction.
Vision
His plays in front of the net for rebounds, deflections.

His play behind the net to feed his teammates.

You can clearly see in those highlights that the variations of his plays is off chart and it will translate so well in the NHL cause he is not a one trick pony

Guys this dude is the man to draft at all cost.

Agreed. With the #17 ,i would go with Carbonneau or Lankovic

I do think it's weird that Martone can get a pass on his warts and be ranked at the very top of the class yet people will crucify Lakovic.

There is no comparison between their "warts". Obviously it is not some conspiracy as Martone appears to be unanimously the higher regarded prospect so why not just accept that Lakovic's warts are objectively much more concerning than Martone's at this particular point in their respective development curves?

Lakovic was a pure perimeter, ultra soft player for the vast majority of the season which is why he was so far behind Martone in production. Martone may not be as physical as we hoped he would be but he looks like Tom Wilson compared to Lakovic.

Things could certainly change as Lakovic is new to being a big player and perhaps he just needs time to adjust his game but he plays extremely small and lives off of taking shots from the outside on the rush. It was better near the end of the season but he looks a lot more like Anthony Mantha who frustrated every coach that he ever had with his soft perimeter play than he does a building block for an up and coming team. I am not opposed at all to drafting him if Hughes/Gorton/Bobrov/Lapointe have information that gives them reason to believe that he will be willing take take the punishment necessary to be a difference maker at the NHL level.

Martone also appears to have a significant edge in IQ but that is not always easy to tell at this age.

Until there is a consolidated review of draft results, draft question&answer analysis, and later NHL success I can’t help but feel the NHL will continue to grope in the dark with half-baked and unrigorous scouting.

That tidbit about Nick Suzuki being written off basically makes my point: if nobody is interested in figuring out how to minimize these mistakes then the whole thing is shoddy.
