HF Habs: 2025 NHL Draft: Part II

Every draft is more and more rich kids only and when there's one that isn't they make articles about it. Most recent are Lindstrom and Cooley iirc.

Read the thread;

Sooner rather than later one would think draft classes will be impacted, so much kids that probably have it in their DNA would never know because they just come from families that can't afford 10-20k a year on one kid's hobby

A good example:

The "business problem" was that Canada wasn't making enough NHL players (lol). The "business solution" is "Brad gets a second G Wagon."

I think Canadian hockey will cannibalize itself if it continues down the ~50k/yr plus CoL inflation track it is currently on. There's no justifiable explanation for, eg, Finland routinely producing excellent NHL players at nominal fees while we completely blow out the cost curve domestically. It's just greed and sheepish, cashed up parents.

A player who can do anything on the ice, Justin Carbonneau is a force on the ice in any zone. His game begins with his explosive skill set and speed. In the defensive zone, he constantly scans the zone to pick up an opponent and support his defensemen from his center position. While he shows signs of being a solid defensive presence, this is one area of his game that could use further development and improvement, as he occasionally struggles with coverage and positioning. Once he gets the puck on his stick, that scanning of the ice continues. He is either looking for a passing lane to a teammate or open ice to get moving up the ice with his speed and stick handling.

Braeden Cootes (C, R, 5’11”, 185, Seattle Thunderbirds, 02/09/2007)

Braeden Cootes is a dynamic, high-energy center with a relentless motor and an aggressive style of play. His ability to combine speed, puck skills, and strong hockey IQ makes him an effective offensive and defensive contributor. Cootes plays a 200-foot game, excels at generating scoring chances, and thrives under pressure. While his size is slightly below average for an NHL center, his work ethic, versatility, and willingness to compete make him a player with considerable upside. Continued improvement in puck management, consistency, and physical strength will determine his long-term potential as an NHL player.

I don't buy it. He is described as both offensively creative and a 200-foot center, as well as a cerebral player. That maps to a center all day for me. He could morph into a Suzuki-lite, assuming that he grows an inch or so and puts on 15 lbs or so. If we can get that at 16, sounds good to me.
Reschny has all the tools but ideal size to become a top 6 center in the NHL. High IQ player with great offensive tools.

Still growing at 5'10.5 and sturdy at 187. Could top out at 6' 200+. Even at 5'11", he is described as strong, not to mention talented, cerebral, and defensively responsible. There have been several top centers in the past few decades who align with those dimensions. Crosby, Suzuki, Sakic, and so on. To me, he is the best insurance policy at 16/17 against Hage failing to develop into a proper 2C, if he emerges as a Suzuki-lite.

To cite this article...
“People look at size and to the naked eye they always look at height. And you know what, wingspan and length and reach is one way of looking at size and it’s awesome to have, but Cole is built like Sid (Sidney Crosby),” Huxley said. “He’s low to the ice. His legs are super strong and going to be super explosive. And if you watch him down low, he isn’t getting beat off pucks very often and that’s because he’s very, very strong.”

I'd definitely consider Reschny long and hard if I think he ends up a center which is a possibility based on his two way game

Also based on his size and weight he seems to be built like truck which will help him make the NHL

I guess being generational helps, but in 22 years of following Crosby I have never thought of him as a small player.

If Reschny really has tree trunks for legs, than he should get serious consideration with one of our two firsts.

Has a case study ever been done about central scouting lists? (Teams picks vs central scouting BPA)

Lots of fun anecdotes here;

Montreal have a real good draft of it plays out like his rankings. Definitely McQueen and Bear at 16&17. Genborg at 41 and Ryabkin at 49. We get two center prospects and gritty winger in Bear.

They do split lists, skaters/goalies + NA/Euro. That make teams picks vs their lists everything but straightforward.

Grant was on 690 today and said some teams think Prokhorov could go as high as 12th overall. He's who he wants the Habs to pick at 16.
There's a non zero chance he'll still be around by the time the third round starts. It would be quite the reach, as much as the kid is legit interesting. But scouts always get real excited when they see a jumbo size prospect with a decent tool set, I get it.
