Who would you have taken at 5 if Colombus took Demidov at 4?
Dickinson.
It wouldn't have been ideal because of handedness and us having already many D prospects, but he would have been BPA.
The fact that he fell to #11 is stupendous luck for the Sharks, same thing for Buium at #12 for Minnesota.
Some teams in the top-10 massively messed-up in my opinion.
Even before the injury, I had Cayden Lindstrom at the tail-end of my top-10 (I think #9 mid-season edition or something like that, Iginla and Catton ended up ranking higher than him in final list) as I liked his physical potential and some of his toolset, but his play selection seemed both poor and predictable to me and I didn't like his playmaking ability, nor Lindstrom's goalscoring instincts (getting into position, setting screens, etc.).
And I especially didn't like that Lindstrom seemed to "abuse" his size advantage in the CHL for much of his production and offensive flashes.
Seriously, go watch footage of Lindstrom's in his draft year trying to retain possession along the boards or the net, extending plays that he would often end up capitalizing on.
If Lindstrom had proper technique, body positioning, and "engage tactics" when battling for possession, it would be a non-issue for me. But since he's all over the place on those issues, and unbelievably "raw" there too, he had to depend on physical gifts a good chunk of the time when battling, got "crunched" or hit awkwardly many more times than a guy like Iginla (with GREAT puck-protection technique) ever did when doing the same thing.
And I won't say that the lack of proper technique when battling for the puck is why Lindstrom specifically got his herniated disk, but it is definitely part of the reason why in my opinion.
After Lindstrom, I also think Yakemchuk shouldn't have been the second defenseman taken.
And that both Berkly Catton and Tij Iginla are nice players, but that the Utah Mammoth and Seattle Kraken should have both opted for the higher-end defensemen available instead.
They had holes to fill though, and I can understand their rationale. I don't agree with it, but I understand.
