HF Habs: 2025 NHL Draft: Part II

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
The usual top four, Desnoyers and Frondell aren't happening.

Well be picking from the likes of Eklund, Mrtka, J. Smith, O'Brien, Martin, Bear, Aitcheson, Hensler, Carbonneau, Lakovic, etc. I'd imagine Mrtka and Eklund are gone when we pick, probably McQueen too as someone will roll the dice in a draft like this.

This year its a good thing, the top 5 isn't that strong and a few of the top 30 players will be as good or better than the top 5.

I know how irrelevant +/- is but like damn man when you’re +21 and the next best guy on the team is +4 that’s a crazy statistical difference.

I live in the Sault and have seen Martin develop. He will do anything for his team to win; he is everything to a Hounds club that is young and needs his leadership.

A player like him who can engineer offense, and yet seems to equally love buggering up the opponent’s offense, is a joy to watch.

The healthy plus-minus has been completely earned.

Versus Brampton he had a pair of assists, dished out a couple of dandy hits, and took one too while cruising behind the Brampton net.

I think he’ll be picked around 12th given his talent, grit and trajectory.

Would be a welcome addition to the Habs who seem destined to pick closer to that number than 6-8.

Sept of ‘23…large contingent of family on hand for Martin’s first OHL game.

I sadly think that if we don’t draft 9-10 he’s gonna be gone.

I don’t disagree, it IS possible. It’s that kind of year.

I ‘silently’ hope the Habs target him and if req’d, move up 1-2 spots to get him.

Going forward, I’ll try to keep focused on what I see, but Martin has won me over.

His injury absence last season, and ‘rookie’ TOI had me hesitant back in September, but he’s blossoming as expected now.

Would you trade both firsts to move up to get him?

McCagg in his latest podcast said Serge Boisvert been scouting Martin. So Habs must be interested. He said 10 centers with 2nd line capabilities could go in top 18. He recommended Jack Nesbitt with Flames pick. To me though I am no sold. Could be another Logan Brown also.

Nesbitt has developed and improved quite nicely this season, but yeah, it's always a bit risky taking those super tall centers who aren't all that fast or all that physical. You take him with the idea that his curve is still going to be going up for a few years though, he's a long-ish term project.

Less "skill" way more jam.
FWIW, I think Martin has a lot of runway left in his development, I've seen him flash some high end skill at times, but he's on such a bad team that he rarely gets to try more ambitious plays. This is a guy that grew up training on a farm and shooting pucks in the basement, he has the natural work ethics to put in the efforts to improve his game IMO. It definitely won't be from a lack of trying.

He is an easy draft pick for me. As of right now the Habs would be picking #13 and #15. If McQueen drops to 13 he is the obvious choice. Swing for the fences and pick a potential top 5 player much later.

Now if I was drafting in the top 5 I would make a much safer choice.

McQueen, healthy, was not in my top 20.
McQueen, with what happened...

He doesn't have Byfield's hands, same good physical tools. He's not worth a top 15 any year.

Yeah he’s been paired with Marco Mignosa who knows where the net is and the two have some chemistry.

I’ve met the fam and they’re great people.

You’re quite right about Martin’s upbringing and work ethic. The team taking him won’t have to sweat that aspect at all.

First thought, no. I’d move two and pad the offer a bit to get into the Top 6, but I think moving one (with more padding) should/could do it.

One Habs’ blogger that a forum poster linked here recently said the Habs want a 3rd pick in the first. Not sure what that means, but my guess is it would ‘free’ them to move one and still have two, or move two and still have one.
