Wow Kent Hughes was targeting Gavin Brindley with the 31th OV pick and then Fowler with the 37th OV pick if they hadnt traded for Newhook. The scouts told him that they thought Fowler would still be there early 3rd round so he made the trade.

Brindley was a favorite of mine in that draft year, had him around 12 th OV, he finally got picked 34th OV by Columbus.

I was in a similar boat with Brindley at the time, would have been an interesting alternative scenario.

We were going to take Brindley? We already too small. Gauthier I remember most on here wanted late first. I imagine Augustine been one of those 2 picks though. Habs were angling goalies in that draft.

I'm ecstatic at the fact we will have a chance at Desnoyers after all (and better odds at Schaefer). And if Calgary drops out of the playoffs, we might also have a chance at Mrtka using a 2nd round pick to move up near 10-11 OA.

Is every scouting department this good at predicting when players will land?

Obviously there's always luck that's involved, but the team correctly predicted that Hutson, Fowler and Hage would all fall to us.

Also another interesting tidbit is that probably means the Habs were higher on Fowler than Gajan or Hrabal who both went in the early 2nd round.

Yeah he, Edstrom and Wahlberg were on my short list for those two picks as well.

A midget centre?

Unlike Newhook, Brindley is actually quite good defensively and can play anywhere in your lineup (both C and W).

No one would complain about having a Gourde or Pageau in our bottom 6.

I think Bobrov estimated at about 20% the odds Hage drops to 21th OV. They apparently had a trade in the work if Hage wasnt there. So they got a bit lucky to get their guy, but they obviously had a B plan and possibly a C plan as well since I think they liked Surin quite a bit too.

As for Fowler, they obviously had him very high.

Teams dress their own list and try to project what range those kids are expected to go, lists likely differ alot, for exemple, when Arizona traded up to grab Lamoureux 1st round, Im pretty sure some scouting staffs were scratching their head at a such move, but since they really liked him, they made the move.

Some scouting staffs are more accurate and better structured than others, personally I think pretty highly of the Habs one, thats easily one of the best in the league, if not the best one IMO. Their budget is likely much bigger than a minor market though.
