As much as I sincerely believe the sharks have "earned" back to back 1OA picks after years of being a playoff team and watching other franchise flail in their tanking efforts, Im also a conspiracy theorist who doesn't think the league will accept the sharks getting that luxury... They will find basketball reasons to drop the sharks at least to #2

Like... making us win the draft lottery three times last year before finally conceding?

Edited to add the necessary emoji: 🤫

We've earned back to back OA picks because we are terrible right now and that's the whole point. Also, we got scammed out of our first 1st OA back in the day so this would just be making it right anyway :P

I won't be a conspiracy theorist about this unless the San Antonio Spurs win the lottery.

The NHL draft lottery exists in a superposition of rigged and not rigged.
Schroedinger's Lottery

With the benefit of hindsight, though, sending McDavid to Edmonton was likely more beneficial and lucrative for the league than sending him to Arizona, Buffalo or even Toronto would have been.

McDavid singlehandedly turned the Oilers from a middle of the pack revenue/valuation team (on par with the Sharks in those days) into the greatest revenue generator in the league and a top 5 valued franchise. I don't think there would have been nearly the same effect in Arizona or Buffalo especially given their cheap and incompetent ownership groups and Toronto doesn't need the help.

Sending McDavid to NYC, Boston, Chicago was not an option since they weren't in the lottery.

I want to pick Schaefer at #2 this year, McKenna at #1 next year, and then I never want to pick below 10 again until I die or Celebrini retires, whichever comes first.

Hopefully the other bottom feeders see what Cherny is doing for Misa and take him at #1 so Schaefer is around for us instead.

You don’t want to take a shot at DuPont?
If we're still legit taking a shot at Dupont as opposed to finishing 11th and getting lucky, then this rebuild stalled out and Grier may not be the GM drafting DuPont. I don't think we'll be a contender or even in the playoffs by 2027 but if we're still bottom 3, woof.

Brother, you want to be f***ing terrible for two whole more years just for the small percentage chance of winning a lottery on a guy who is 15 right now and, for as good as he looks, could technically stall out (or get hurt) and be nothing special? We're losing perspective here.

Honestly, the only time I’d applaud a fixed lottery is if CBJ wins.
I would especially be okay with that if they just barely miss the playoffs and can only jump to 5th overall or whatever.

Mckenna is the last one i wouldn't be upset about bottoming out for. After that a core of Schaefer, Dickenson, Celebrini, Smith, McKenna, Askarov would be instant cup favorites.

My point with tanking for DuPont is that we are not that far into our rebuild, given that you only started with our first top 10 pick in 2021 (#7 Eklund). When you look at other similar rebuilding teams in the league, they all spent a long time tanking, for around 10 years on average. New Jersey 2017 to 2025 (Hischier-Silayev), Colorado 2012 to 2019 (landy- Byron), which are all longer than our rebuild from 2021 to 2027 if we were to go for DuPont.

Which team had the most high picks in a short time span (say pick 1-3), since that's basically what you're advocating here, to finish #1 multiple years in a row?

I hope not to see us continue to be at the very bottom of the standings. If we manage to end up with the 1OA after 2025, let it be because the lotto gods elevated us into that spot. There will always be that player/ prospect that makes a fan want to lose.

No. You don't risk stunting the rest of the young guys and furthering the losing culture here for a small chance at winning the lottery. You'd have to be absolutely dead last for the third year in a row to have anything more than a 13.5% chance at winning McKenna. Those odds aren't worth it.

The Devils got exceptional lottery luck, without which they wouldn't be an exciting rebuild; they wouldn't have Hischier, Hughes, or Nemec without it and would basically be a lame tweener team right now, if that. The Avs made the playoffs in Mackinnon's rookie year and had very respectable seasons in 2015 and 2016, had one awful season in 2017, made the playoffs again in 2018 and 2019 (they got Byram from the Duchene trade, not from tanking). The Sharks being absolutely hot garbage between 2020 and 2027 would not remotely similar to either of those situations.
