2025 NHL Draft: Lose a ton for Porter Martone

I think the bigger question is Hagens vs Martone. I agree that Misa has separated himself from the other two.

I disagree. Hagens clearly over Martone.

I think still think Hagens is the top forward in the draft but as Jux said Misa is the better (and less redundant) fit without any significant talent gap as there would be in Martone.

Agreed. If we end up at 3, Grier will have a philosophical choice to make.

Hagens was basically invisible in BC's Beanpot loss tonight.
I still think Grier wants to add size up front so I think he picks Martone if the draft was tomorrow. Hagens seems to just be digging holes.

I'm not convince this would be the right choice though......

You could squint at Frondell if he keeps up his recent "I'm back, baby" pace, or REALLY squint at Desnoyers, as a Grier pick at 3/4. But I think you're right twice -- it's probably Martone, and it's possibly not the "right" choice even though it feels like the choice he might have to make. I hope to god we're not the front office that "has to take the gamble" on McQueen, this year's terrifying back injury Lindstrom.

I'm just so very glad we landed Celebrini last year. Can you imagine if we drafted Levshunov last year and were trying to talk ourselves into Misa or Hagens being our 1C of the future??

As it stands, I sure hope we can land Schaefer (would be awesome to have stud prospects at 1C, 1G, AND 1 D), but even if we don't, it sounds like we're going to pick up a good piece to build around Mack. It's a good feeling. Haven't had too many of those watching the team lately, so hopefully it feels as refreshing to read this as it did to process it. 😅

Granted he's 8 months younger than Smith in his season of college hockey, but to produce .5 PPG less with the same elite- and year older- linemates seems concerning. WJC performance was good but not sure I put a whole lot of stock in playing with your college line including two 19 year olds, and Buium or Hutson. CHL hockey is fun, but its like a distant relatives to the NHL, whereas college and AHL feel like legitimate feeder leagues in terms of style/physical play/player size. Appreciate that makes it really hard to project different leagues.

Not surprisingly HF overreacts to hot streaks (and everything!) but I do think the public scout takes tend to be around 1-2 months behind HF, and media filtering of those messages might be another month. I think Misa will be the #2 guy, and I really, really hope Hagens picks it up, as there's probably a 50% chance we'll be picking third.

If you told me Hagens would be Logan Cooley, I'd definitely take that happily.
For the record, Hagens has only played half his games with Perreault/Leonard (and that line never worked, IMO). Right now he's got a 5 point player as his left winger. (And yeah, I'm now going to go rant in the Hagens thread.)

I think Hagens will end up being a really good choice at 3 (if he's there). I'd absolutely take him over Martone. But I'm not sure if GMMG would agree.

Thing with drafting any of the top 4 players based on what I've read here:

Schaefer = The need for another top 5 pick in 2026 is not as crucial anymore. 1D taken care with Dickinson bringing depth.
Misa = The need for defencemen is still there, but the forward core is pretty set
Hagens = Almost same as Misa, but I would prefer Misa
Martone = Mystery box, but on the bright side could be the key player we need for that forward core. Still need a defencemen.

Don't know if my quick and simple analysis made any sense, but if Sharks get Schaefer... It's a giant win for the franchise.

Will probably depend on team need. Like if it is Chicago, Hagens is probably ahead of Misa because he's a for sure center and a nice compliment to Bedard's offense only style.

If it's the Sharks, Misa is probably ahead of Hagens because he is a C/W tweener that is a bigger body than Hagens and we theoretically have Smith slated as our 2C of the future.
Don’t agree with this. Misa would compliment Bedard better than Hagens. Misa does the details right, win pucks and don’t have to hold the puck a lot. Playing with Bedard, he could focus on finding open space and then fire on passes from Bedard. He also has the size advantage over Hagens.

Hagens and Bedard would probably work fine because they both have elite IQ and skill but there both short, both want to have to puck as much as possible. It’s not ideal.

Although, Chicago won’t make their choice based on who fits with Bedard the best. The idea is probably that either of them will be the longtime 2C.

Another aspect it that almost all of Chicagos top prospects are under 6ft except Boisvert
and he’s probably only a 3C if he pans out. They won’t not take Hagens because of it but it’s something to think about.

As a hawks fan I would lean Misa right now because he feels like someone you can win with.

Right now, it feels like we are pretty much guaranteed a top 3 pick, which would be great. Feel like Schafer is obviously the ideal prize, but any of Misa/Hagens/Martone would be a great addition. Who knows if we maintain the worst record though. I would like to think that the break will help the kids quite a bit and they will return rejuvenated and lead us to more wins. In fact, I kinda hope that is the case.

Like @Sharksfan66 said, it is so fortunate that we were able to get Celebrini. It makes it feel like we are now looking for pieces to build around our franchise cornerstone rather than still trying to find the guy. Last year, I would have been disappointed if we went on a run in the last third of the season and fell in the draft order. This year, there is a part of me that wants that to happen. As great as it would be to land Schafer and dream of future lineups in the offseason, I kinda want to see Mack, Smith and Eklund return from the break and take another step forward. If that means, we end up having to pick 4-5, so be it.

They are 8 points behind Nashville with Nashville having 3 games in hand. It would take a serious run playing around .600 point percentage the rest of the season to pass them. The Sharks are virtually guaranteed to pick top 4 unless they play like a top 10 team in the league for the remainder of the season.

We have the toughest schedule remaining and now have traded most of our useful non-rookies

Yea it would be a miracle to climb up

I'm with you. As others have pointed out, the team would have to play really, really well to takes out of a top 3 pick, so if the kids pull that off, I might actually be more jacked about the future than if we landed Schaefer!
