2025 NHL Draft: Lose a ton for Porter Martone

Middle six Martone would still be more valuable than middle six Misa or Hagens, both to the team and via trade. His size and RH shot are rarer traits than anything the other two have going for them so if their NHL production/impact ends up in the same range we're going to want Martone especially given the makeup of our core forwards. Misa is probably the safest pick of the three with the lowest risk of being an outright bust. But should we really be prioritizing downside risk over potential upside with a top 3 pick?
What example would you cite as a comparable trade for someone with Martone's profile? I tend to think that even middle six centers still have more value than middle six wingers regardless of their archetype.

If Misa and Hagens establish themselves as centers then they would likely have more value than Martone but part of the risk is that they end up on the wing in the NHL. The value is more of a supply and demand thing than based on specific trades. There are more left-shot offensive wingers of average to below average size in the league than big right-shot power forwards. Obviously the calculation changes based on how likely it is you think Misa becomes a legit 2C while Martone develops into a souped up Stefan Noesen.

I can agree with the supply and demand thing. I just don't think it plays well into the math on who to pick at this area of the draft. The centers tend to hold value well. The wingers aren't as safe a bet. I don't think the Sharks specifically aren't in a position to take that sort of risk. We need largely sure bets to make it and/or retain value.
How about Will Cullye? 50 point power wingers are valuable.
Of course they are but he wants a right shot version of that. Nailing something down that specific has lower odds of success.

Palat, Cirelli and especially Killorn are/were extremely physical players.
They were also insulated by a monster D-corp. Verhoeff would go a long way in legitimizing a smallish top 6. Having one of the Hoeff, Dickinson, or hopefully Mukh on the ice at all times during the playoffs would be nasty. Speaking of D, I don't see much of a path for a meaningful upgrade this summer, which means we'll have a legitimate shot at Verhoeff. If we don't land Schaefer this year, outside of a lotto win for Dupont, I think Verhoeff is our last real shot at drafting a surefire superstar dman. Unless a riser surprises us.

Chase Reid looks really good as well. 6'1 RHD scoring above Parekh's D-1 rate in the OHL. While they don't solve the defense problem, Belchetz (6'5 winger) and Roebrook (6'4 C) are also in the mix along with McKenna. It looks to be a really good top 5 all of which solve a need (RHD, franchise player, top 6 size). The other two guys who are projected as top 10 picks but don't bring as much to our roster composition are Bjork and Stenberg (Smaller wingers). It's possible we could get a top pair RHD at 4/5. I don't see anyone displacing McKenna, but centers could go before RHD.

If Grier can pull the Sharks out of the top 5 next year, it'd be a miracle. Then again adding a pair of Misa/Verhoeff, Schaefer/Belchetz, or Schaefer/McKenna (hopefully through a move up, and not a third year as the worse team) would be their own miracles.

So Button has Demidov #1 on his NHL affiliated prospect list mostly because he's setting all sorts of records in the KHL, so anyone insinuating he's trending to bust just has a narrative they're pushing that's spearheaded by personal animosity rather than facts.

Michkov also broke all sorts of KHL records last year. That league is simply not the same quality it was a few years ago.

His points per game rate is lower than Michkov's last season and Kaprizov put up those numbers in a much stronger league.
Like I said, a narrative.

It's still a very strong league. The quality of goaltending is significantly stronger now.

I’m not even denying that he’s the #1 drafted prospect but realistically who is his competition? Every truly elite prospect from the last couple of drafts is already in the NHL and presumably ineligible for Button’s rankings. Levshunov and Sennecke are having underwhelming years, Lindstrom hasn’t played a game in like 18 months, Reinbacher and Simashev have not developed since their draft year. Going back to the 2022 draft, Nemec and Korchinski (if they’re even eligible for this) are starting to look like busts.

I feel that with Chernyshov playing in Saginaw, the scouting staff will know exactly what type of player Misa will be and if they want to use 2nd overall on him. Also doesn’t hurt that him and Cherny seem to have some chemistry already
