Remember literally a few weeks ago when people were claiming Hagens is on the same level as Celebrini? He has 1 goal in 12 games. How can anyone justify ranking this smurf 1OA let alone compare his potential to Macklin?

My least fav of the 'big four' so far.

The only reason he's still getting pigeonholed at the top lists are his U17s and the USNTDP productivity on his resume, which were awesome tbf, but it's hard not to feel... underwhelmed. It's not like he's been a liability or anything but maybe we were spoiled and expected a little bit too much for him to follow directly in the footsteps of Eichel, Fantilli and Celebrini's draft seasons as college freshman.

Schaefer aside, I don't see how you could ledger Hagens' D0 alongside Misa's and still vouch the smaller, older and significantly less productive (NHLe) center.

Would prefer Martone to him as well.

Nobody on this forum was saying that though. No reason to grandstand here.

Hagens is still a really good prospect. He just happens to play with the greatest puck hog in the NCAA.
Yet Smith got plenty of goals next to that puck hog.

I think the real argument is if Smith is better than Hagens. I would vote Smith.

What are the chances we get Schaefer without the lottery win? Feels like Chicago could go either way with him or another forward to give Bedard some much needed help. Not sure about the other bottom dwellers.
Nah i feel like Chicago knows they need someone to play with Bedard who is increasingly looking like a winger rather than a C, i think they go Hagens/Misa before anyone else.

Smith was best friends with and same age as that puck hog. Hagens is a 17-year-old freshman who is shooting like 3%.

People here are acting really weird about a kid they've never seen play.

So that best friend will refuse to sign and then sign with the Sharks in 3 years to play with his best friend.

I can get behind that.

Hagens is a better prospect than Smith. Doesn't mean we'd rather have one than the other (I might prefer Hagens but it doesn't matter).

Right on cue, BC separates Hagens and Leonard and Hagens immediately has two goals.
I don't understand how anyone has ever had Leonard on the same level as Smith and Perrault. When one guy is always trying to force plays and every season ends up with the fewest points per game out of the three, that should be a pretty big red flag.

How Leonard translates to the NHL is going to be absolutely fascinating for me, after watching him for the last two years. On one hand, he's a tenacious forechecker and boards battler and he's pretty strong defensively for a winger. He's got a great shot and pretty good playmaking. But I'm extremely curious how his style of play translates once he can't just physically throw himself around. So much of his 'heroics' come from one-man plays that I'm not sure would fly in the NHL. So whether he turns out to be a first line power forward or just a great two-way second liner is going to be a great litmus test of NHL translationability.

The thing is, those plays aren't even good in college. Just no coaches have called it out yet. If he were just patient and played off his elite teammates, they would have scored even more. He shows great hands and skills, but more often he just gets smashed and turns it over. So without that, what does he have? Like you said, hardworking board battler, which is fine, but I don't see it translating to much more than a slightly undersized bottom 6 grinder type.

It's worth remembering that even if some of these prospects have been on our radars for many years at this point, they're still teenagers. Do you expect a 19 year old to be mature and calculated in literally any aspect of their lives? If not, then is that a reasonable expectation for how they should act on the ice at that age?

As you're acknowledging, he is extremely skilled, and he is more than willing to get his hands dirty. He also has the requisite physical traits. It would be difficult to list what you're looking for in a teenage prospect beyond skills, compete, and measurables. His hockey sense and decision-making aren't refined, but it's not like he is committing egregious turnovers/penalties. These are areas that can be improved upon with coaching and experience.

Ever since watching Leonard, I haven't believed the hype. He's obviously skilled and he plays with his heart on his sleeve, but he plays a totally not translatable game IMHO. As you both have said - he plays hero hockey, and he plays a crash and bang style that writes a check his body can't cash at barely 6'0" 200 or whatever. On his ass way more than people seem to admit even in the NCAA.

Basically I see a ceiling at current Zetterlund, and possibly ending up as a role player if he's smart enough to adapt to a game like a rich man's Kunin or Delly. Maybe he's lucky enough to play the same role as he currently does with a real star (Strome) in the NHL but I just don't know.

I feel similarly to Gauthier here. NHL player but nowhere near as good as people project, unless they stop playing meathead hockey.
