Hagens at #3. While its not a shocker to see the long time front runner bumped from #1, I think many will be surprised he's ranked #3 and neither of the players above him is Martone. I wonder if it has less to do with how Hagens is playing and more to do with how Schaefer and Misa are playing.

Huh. This is literally the first time I’ve heard of Matthew Schaefer.

I have heard Pronman, Wheels and Peters discuss him on The Athletic Prospects podcast. Pronman and Wheels both have him #3.

Hagens is apparently shooting at a ridiculously low percentage at the moment, which might have something to do with it.

Schaefer is so good. I’ve seen him compared to Heiskanen a bit. Schaef is a better skater who’s a little more willing to challenge and activate.

Tuned in recently to watch him take on Martone. Was in complete control of the ice when he was out there. Gave Martone absolutely no breathing room. Martone didn’t have an easy time when Schaef was matched up against him. Schaef has an incredible composure about him. Puck slipped by him on the boards and Martone picked it up on an odd man rush. There was absolutely no panicking from Schaef. He turned around and skated back. Got back into the play and broke it up before it evolved into a scoring threat.

This isn’t written to knock down Martone by any means but Schaef is just that much more preferable to me. He also just came back from Mono so he will be getting back up to speed rather soon and I’m sure he will pick up even more steam.

HP scouts not liking the depth of this class. They're comparing it to 2019 draft based on what they've gathered so far from watching and talking to executives, coaches and other scouts.

Maybe Waddell should rather take 2026 1st from Provorov trade than a late 1st from this year?

Well, Edmonton have been rumoured to be interested in Provorov and they don't have a 1st in 2025.

The objections that immediately come to mind is that a 2026 pick might be more difficult to flip and that Ravensbergen, the goalie, might be available with the Provorov pick.

  • If you trade for this upcoming draft, in theory the team picking up Provy plans to go deep this year. I am fine pushing it off a year...especially if you could maybe get the "top ten protected" pushed back to "lottery protected" or gotten rid of all together.
  • Is Ravensbergen really all that special? I mean are we talking generational? I know it's just stats, never seen him play, but he's playing for a second place team that is #8 out of 22 in GA in the league but he's carrying a 3.08 GAA (7th best) and .899 Save Percentage (11th best).
  • Both of those key goalie stats are significant regressions from last season.
  • Evan Gardner's numbers in the same league were better last year and are way better this year. And Gardner's numbers last year (his draft year) were way better than Ravensbergen's numbers this year (his draft year). Sounds like he's being over-hyped.
  • As you said before, it's not a deep draft, being the best goalie in this draft doesn't make him a great goalie prospect, just makes him the best of a "meh" group. If he's not elite and just a "good" prospect, there are "good" prospects in every draft, I wouldn't be doing cartwheels to get the guy.

I don't necessarily disagree, I just looked to add some nuance.

Ummm...OK. So no actual interview? I don't get it...am I missing something?
"we" in this instance = the CBJ hockey ops brass.

they're doing their legwork on potential draft picks and in this instance that means doing an interview with him (like a job interview, not a news interview) to get a sense for his makeup.

i don't think we'll be in a position to take him but that kid is at the top of my list personally

I'll try to study Jackson Smith more in the coming weeks.
He's looked good recently.

Skilled skater in all directions, very good in transition plays particularly. On the offensive end can separate from opponents with smooth mohawk moves, and passes and shoots pretty well but as a playmaker and shooter hasn't looked that dangerous yet. Skating skill and acceleration seem a bit more limited in d zone, so because of that and the lack of high-end vision he sometimes gets into trouble in breakout plays. But generally speaking he's a smart and effective puck mover.

Not much to complain about his defensive IQ and tools either. Rush defense, stick checking and occasional hard body checks are probably the best defensive traits. Compete level is somewhat inconsistent, I'd like to see more aggression in net front and effort to eliminate secondary chances.

He was the 3rd best D on HP's Nov list (#17 overall), and 2nd best behind Schaefer on EP's Dec list (#6 overall). I get why scouts like him. Well-rounded D with projectable tools and no obvious red flags. Based on the knowledge I have today I think I would be fine with drafting him if he happens to be in our range in June.

Feels like we will end in the 6-10 range barring some major changes. The Hawks, Ducks and Preds seem to have the top 3 locked up and then the rest of the bottom 10 are a giant question mark as to who could climb out/fall down particularly once players start getting traded away. If that's right it feels like Roger McQueen/Matthew Schaefer as best case and Logan Hensler/Jackson Smith/Lynden Lackovic as worst case. Not sure on skating ability of those guys as that seems to be a priority but that group seems to address some of the other common characteristics (i,e, size, position, etc.).
