NHL Entry Draft: 2025 Draft Pick Watch

I got an idea, Chris!

Next time, pull out the seer from her bog in the Great Swamp, have her throw bones on the interview table and read the kids future.

This reads exactly like some inept asshole got into a position of great power, so it checks out hard for me.
Honestly, it sounds like someone ask chatGPT what a good question or activity would be to test some arbitrary mental skill that chatGPT also told them was important for the success of NHL athletes.

Nashville literally had players try to balance golf balls on one another.

Montreal asked players what kind of animal they compare to off the ice.

There is a reason teams do this shit and in the grand scheme of things its not that important. This isn't exclusive to the Rangers.

everything i’m seeing def screams that Martin is a riser. This type of shit happens every year around this time, when the interviewing process starts guys start to rise and drop. And Martin is like the stereotype of a late riser, especially in a draft this barren. Maybe these other guys have a bit better of a ceiling, but I think the gap is small enough to where a team liking Martin in interviews gives him an edge
Yup. Said it two weeks ago. Martin is a big time riser and it would not shock me to see him go top 5.

Looks like we've identified a few more chat GPT franchises then.
In all seriousness, I think these types of tests are more about how players react than the actual tests themselves.
Like if someone is like "no, I'm not doing this horse shit" ok, red flag. Thank you and good luck.
Or if they get really frustrated and quit. Or really frustrated and angry.
Looking back at Lias throwing his silver medal, it's wild how the franchise tried to spin his competitiveness. That's something I can see these types of tests aiming to unearth.

Exactly, they are just one or two points of data in a whole host that is being collected.
If we had any evidence that the result of the test was the only thing being used to evaluate talent then there'd be cause for concern. If we found that the this test took up most of the allotted interview time then you could be a bit worried. But there isn't, and once again we are making mountains out of mole-hills

At least their shit has some merit!

The golf ball balancing? Fine motoric skills.

Animal comparison? Personality test.

Our shit reads like some esoteric medium, the Mentalist type shit.

For those who have invested a lot into researching this class, do you think the NYR should keep pick 12?

What are the chances they draft an actual impact player there, and not just another guy with pretty glaring flaws / upside limitations / who is a "project"?

I have my opinion but I haven't truly put in the work this year. So wanted to see what the group thinks.

picking out particular numbers from a random field is not esoteric. Hahahahaha. They aren't being asked to say what card I'm thinking of... Picking out/recognizing passing/shooting lanes and/or your teammates at a quick glance is about hockey vision. Players like Gabe and Pan probably SLAY that test.
Of all the things to get hung up on.
Balancing golf balls is far stupider. These guys all have great hand/foot eye coordination to get to this level. Hockey requires more of that than any other sport. The only one close is soccer.

You're being ridiculously dramatic about this and severely overreacting to something so trivial. Montreal asked prospects what they would do if they were stranded in the desert with someone with only a bottle of water and a baseball bat; can't share the water, and the other person takes the water first. Ottawa told players to tell them a joke.

The Rangers thing is basic visual acuity and reaction timing, and that's what you get mad about?

Down year after multiple great seasons, new coach bump, I don't see us doing any worse than last year. I don't think any GM is going to throw away a guaranteed top 12 pick for magic beans, especially if they think they're going to improve their team. I would be fine with trading the pick but I do NOT want to defer it to next year

There is a player with some of the best tools in the draft (especially skating!) who already had a very strong year in the NCAA in Cullen Potter, who will likely be there at 12

Man I'm just f***ing around.

Chris will still forever stink.

Absolutely. At 12, a good player will drop. If we were around 16 I would probably say maybe give it up, but 12 absolutely not.

I guess what I was getting at is, do we think there are actual impact players there? Or Othmann-like project picks.

Hagens is a guy I know extremely well. He is penciled in as a top 5 pick. I don’t see him as a perennial all star level player. More of a good middle 6 guy. Is he being overhyped, is the draft weak, or am I missing something, etc.

Just grabbed this as well.

If anyone wants a run down on a few guys I’d be happy to provide it.

I gotta say, i'm really disappointed with the quality this year. WAAAAAY shorter breakdowns than they used to give. I'm glad they still have a decent amount of scout quotes, but i'd like to see a lot more detail in the writeups
