NHL Entry Draft: 2025 Draft Pick Watch

Ran the FC Hockey Mock Draft Sim twice:

Sim 1 ("Consensus" Rating, wherever that draws from):

#12- C Jake O'Brien, Brantford Bulldogs (OHL)
#43- D Haoxi Wang, BU (NCAA)
#70- D Maxim Afagonov, Toros Neftekamsk (VHL)
#104- D Reko Alanki, Jokerit U18 (U18-SM-Sarja)
#118- C Adrien Bartovic, Malmo Redhawks J20 (J20 Nationell)
#148- C Mikkel Eriksen, Farjestad BK J18 (J18 Nationell)
#166- D Matt Grimes, Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL)
#171- C Carson Harmer, Saginaw Spirit (OHL)
#203- C Matthew Lansing, Waterloo Black Hawks (USHL)
------------------------------------------------------------------
Sim 2 (FC Hockey Rankings)

#12- C Brady Martin, Soo Greyhounds (OHL)
#43- C Ivan Ryabkin, Muskegon Lumberjacks (USHL)
#70- C William Moore, USNTP U18
#104- D Maxim Afagonov, Toros Neftekamsk (VHL)
#118- RW Shamar Moses, Barrie Colts (OHL)
#148- G Petteri Rimpinen, Kiekko Espoo U20 (U20-SM-Sarja)
#166- RW Jacob Kvasnicka, Univ of Minnesota (NCAA)
#171- C Teddy Mutryn, Chicago Steel (USHL)
#203- D Anthony Allain-Samake, Univ of Connecticut (NCAA)
------------------------------------------------------------------

As much as i think we should be getting rid of this years pick, I'd probably be satisfied with either draft. Hardest pick was probably Ryabkin vs Cameron Schmidt, but I feel like this org would shy away from a guy the size of Schmidt, as good as he is. Martin over McQueen, Smith, Mrtka was also a decision, albeit definitely an easier one.
I'd love to take a pure lottery ticket like Wang in the 2nd round.

Desnoyers has been horrible at the Memorial Cup.

Dude is gonna drop.
He's injured. It hasn't been officially reported, but he's definitely dealing with some shoulder/wrist issue because he just randomly stopped takings faceoffs. I only caught a bit of the game, but his passes/shots looks pretty off too.

That would make sense.

I thought he was a candidate to drop even before the memorial cup for multiple reasons - Lack of real upside, the stigma against the Q (and tbh, the O these days isn't really a whole lot better) and not really playing a super crazy pace pushing style.

Injury or not (if its serious enough that'll certainly be taken in to consideration) it's always a tough when its the last these scouts will see of you. It's why Cam Fowler fell as far as he did after being a top 3-5 guy for almost his entire draft year.

You can say it over and over all you want, not happening.

Guess we can expect you to be doom and gloom all offseason since you clearly think we will be a lottery team next season. Yawn.

The more win-now way of thinking about it is that if NYR return to solid for next season but stll are in need of one major piece (Center, Dman) at the deadline, having the first would help.

But I'm not expecting it at this point.

As long as the organization thinks Potter stays at C in the National, he’d be a great pick.

we're certainly better off if he can play c in the nhl given there's not almost no quality or quantity of internal options looking to crack the nhl roster in the foreseeable future. that said, wing or c, i just really want that style of player - a few of them - added to the system. high pace, high skill, and aggressive in challenging defenders 1 on 1, and he's the highest ceiling option of that type - at least of the realistic options.

if they took a guy like cootes or reschny who are more likely to be c's i got no issue with that. they aren't as dynamic on the puck or aggressive in attacking with it, but they play a game that can be just as effective with their pace, competitiveness, iq, and ability to retrieve pucks. in nhl player terms it's sort of like a barzal/ehlers/cooley/hughes style player who can dominate play with the puck on their stick/singlehandedly break down a team's defensive structure in an instant vs a jarvis/point/raymond style who play with a high motor and are more dog on bone in getting to pucks with the skill to generate chances off of it. if you get anything close to any of them, it's a grand slam of a pick. more importantly, those skillsets are gamechangers for nhl teams, and the rangers don't have almost anything remotely resembling it on the nhl roster or in the pipeline. the closest is probably berard, and while i love what he brings as a player, he's very unlikely to be a big offensive producer. they need to start targeting players who profile as either type regularly, and more actively in upcoming drafts given the complete absence of them currently. if they make this pick in the 1st, i really hope they prioritize it. you always go bpa, but bpa on boards is driven, in part, by the skillsets/personalities an org places more or less value in. the rangers board needs to recognize that while size and strength are, and always will be, a big component of teams that can compete in may/june, you need to complement it with some pace/skill that can open teams up making disruptive plays with the skill to capitalize or individually undress defensive structure out of nothing - ideally both. they've done a fairly impressive job at building up org depth of forwards who offer the former the last couple years, esp with limited draft capital. they've added absolutely nothing to add options who might give you the latter. it's time to shift the overweight of prospect valuation from size/snarl to pace/compete/skill or pace/puck skill/attack oriented until the pipeline/roster have some balance.

Did my first mock draft, I admittedly don’t know much about these guys like some of you so it’s basically a combination of names I’ve heard/read, names I like, size and bits of info that stood out in their profiles

12) Brady Martin
43) Charlie Cerrato
70) Atte Joki
104) Big Wang :naughty:
118) Andreas Straka
148) Maceo Phillips
166) Brandon Gorzynski
171) Blake Arrowsmith
203) Jakub Hess

Lots of cool names in this draft but Blake Arrowsmith is Amazing :yo:

We can trade the 27 first then.

My prediction is that the USHL and Canadian Junior A take the biggest hit, but that there's not much appreciable change overall.

I don't know if Potter with his size projects very well as a C. The game is not just offense......a C has to be good both sides of the puck. Potter's skating would give him the ability to cover a wide area away from the puck but it's kind of like with Jack Hughes.....size and strength facing much bigger matchups (some of whom will be excellent players in their own right) might often put him at a disadvantage in defensive situations. Also his skating is something I think I'd more like from a wing than a center trying to fast break out plays. I'd want him jumping out in the neutral zone more.....not so much defensive responsibility but a fast break player like Caufield.

Rangers must keep this pick especially at #12 unless in a deal for a young player lile Rossi. If you can get lucky you can find a Frank Nazar or Anton Lundell types of prospect at 12 you must keep it. That would require to improve the scouts to do this. Rangers have a tendency tp do well in the first year with a new coach. Why risk giving the pick to the Penguins and most likely improve to make the playoffs to get stuck with pick #23 next season? The track record is impressive lately with the first year of a new coach. Gallant, Laviolette even back to Tom Renney, he took a team projected to be one of the worst teams that season to actually make the playoffs

Rangers will be a playoff team next season. They'll give Pittsburgh the '26 1st.

They'll stay at 12, move up into the top 10, or trade 12 in a deal for immediate help. Those are the options IMO.
I agree. I can also see these scenarios

Kreider traded for either a 1st, and or 2ed and other picks
Those picks used to move up into the draft or to acquire someone like Rossi.

Maybe Rangers package Kreider KAM and 12 to see what they can get.

I bet the Rangers keep the pick to either get someone like Rossi, move up in the draft, or package to change the culture like a Tkachuk level of change of what happened with the Panthers.

If the Rangers were to package Kreider, KAM and 12, I wonder what they can get.

Any chance Drury packages Kreider or KAM with the 12th overall?? I bet he can get a solid return.

But the real question is

can K’Andre Miller, Kreider and 12th overall package get a top 5 pick?
