As much as i think we should be getting rid of this years pick, I'd probably be satisfied with either draft. Hardest pick was probably Ryabkin vs Cameron Schmidt, but I feel like this org would shy away from a guy the size of Schmidt, as good as he is. Martin over McQueen, Smith, Mrtka was also a decision, albeit definitely an easier one.

He's injured. It hasn't been officially reported, but he's definitely dealing with some shoulder/wrist issue because he just randomly stopped takings faceoffs. I only caught a bit of the game, but his passes/shots looks pretty off too.

That would make sense.

I thought he was a candidate to drop even before the memorial cup for multiple reasons - Lack of real upside, the stigma against the Q (and tbh, the O these days isn't really a whole lot better) and not really playing a super crazy pace pushing style.

Injury or not (if its serious enough that'll certainly be taken in to consideration) it's always a tough when its the last these scouts will see of you. It's why Cam Fowler fell as far as he did after being a top 3-5 guy for almost his entire draft year.

The more win-now way of thinking about it is that if NYR return to solid for next season but stll are in need of one major piece (Center, Dman) at the deadline, having the first would help.

But I'm not expecting it at this point.

we're certainly better off if he can play c in the nhl given there's not almost no quality or quantity of internal options looking to crack the nhl roster in the foreseeable future. that said, wing or c, i just really want that style of player - a few of them - added to the system. high pace, high skill, and aggressive in challenging defenders 1 on 1, and he's the highest ceiling option of that type - at least of the realistic options.

if they took a guy like cootes or reschny who are more likely to be c's i got no issue with that. they aren't as dynamic on the puck or aggressive in attacking with it, but they play a game that can be just as effective with their pace, competitiveness, iq, and ability to retrieve pucks. in nhl player terms it's sort of like a barzal/ehlers/cooley/hughes style player who can dominate play with the puck on their stick/singlehandedly break down a team's defensive structure in an instant vs a jarvis/point/raymond style who play with a high motor and are more dog on bone in getting to pucks with the skill to generate chances off of it. if you get anything close to any of them, it's a grand slam of a pick. more importantly, those skillsets are gamechangers for nhl teams, and the rangers don't have almost anything remotely resembling it on the nhl roster or in the pipeline. the closest is probably berard, and while i love what he brings as a player, he's very unlikely to be a big offensive producer. they need to start targeting players who profile as either type regularly, and more actively in upcoming drafts given the complete absence of them currently. if they make this pick in the 1st, i really hope they prioritize it. you always go bpa, but bpa on boards is driven, in part, by the skillsets/personalities an org places more or less value in. the rangers board needs to recognize that while size and strength are, and always will be, a big component of teams that can compete in may/june, you need to complement it with some pace/skill that can open teams up making disruptive plays with the skill to capitalize or individually undress defensive structure out of nothing - ideally both. they've done a fairly impressive job at building up org depth of forwards who offer the former the last couple years, esp with limited draft capital. they've added absolutely nothing to add options who might give you the latter. it's time to shift the overweight of prospect valuation from size/snarl to pace/compete/skill or pace/puck skill/attack oriented until the pipeline/roster have some balance.
 
Did my first mock draft, I admittedly don’t know much about these guys like some of you so it’s basically a combination of names I’ve heard/read, names I like, size and bits of info that stood out in their profiles

My prediction is that the USHL and Canadian Junior A take the biggest hit, but that there's not much appreciable change overall.
