NHL Entry Draft: 2025 Draft Pick Watch

That's completely fair. I think it's tough to say right now that it's not likely that they'll have a better pick next year because there's so many things up in the air right now. I think it'll be better to revisit this in a few weeks to see if they end up firing both of Drury and Laviolette.

I agree that a later pick doesn't necessarily mean that the player will automatically be better, but my point was that there's guys in the 20s next year that'll likely be just as good as the guys I listed before will be at the NHL level. With respect to trading the pick, the Rangers were rumored to be very close to acquiring JJ Peterka; I'd imagine this is the most likely player they'd be moving that pick for, and I'd have no issues with that at all. I would guess that Drury would use the pick to acquire a player like that rather than to bring in vets. I guess it depends on how we're defining vets, but clearly Drury has an archetype for players he wants. We were heavily linked to Guentzel before he went to CAR/TB, and Peterka fits that mold. Who else does Drury want in that vein and what other archetypes is he looking for?
I'd be much more on board with trading picks for 23 year old player than 32 year old players.

Drury better be on the phone with Grier

Why would the Rangers not take the 11th pick? Drury gave Igor $92M and traded for JT MIller with a $8M cap hit and 5 years remaining on his contract. Drury is not expecting the Rangers to tank next season judging by his moves. These are his moves. If Drury gives up this pick fearing the team will be worse next season, Chris should be fired this morning along with Laviolette.
This isn't even about what Drury expects next season. Dolan will go scorched Earth if this team isn't in the playoffs next year. Dolan got sold on the rebuild years ago and people can argue to what extent they were committed to it so much, but from a business standpoint it blew up on his face financially. All they have to show for right now is an underachieving first overall pick that the fanbase generally dislikes. Why do people think he's going to go for it again.

They should 100% give up the pick, but they won't.

New coach bump is the best argument for keeping it.

Agreed, frankly there is no argument for keeping the pick. This team will not be a playoff team next season. Most of the players that people are bringing up will most likely be resigning. There is no real help coming. Yes we move panarin krieder and so forth. We are a lottery team next year. Don’t care what the mandate is from Dolan. There aren’t players out there that will change the fortune of this team in a single offseason.

There is a lot of arguments to keep it.

And there are speculation and opinions we will be worse. But it's just that, opinions.

My opinion is, that pick next year will be around 18-20. I'll keep the nice 11 for this year.

I cant wait for the Rangers to finally announce they are not giving this year pick away so the silly debate can be over with and we can start figuring out who we want to draft.

If that pick is available to Drury next year I would guess he will use it. If he doesn't have it he's likely to use the 2027 1st.

That said if things continue going south he has some players who will get us high draft choices. The Rangers having that shit season next year that some people are sure is going to happen probably means he'll be a seller and then get fired. He won't survive another year of the Rangers not making the playoffs IMO.

Whether the Rangers make the playoffs or not I do think we're going to be better next year. New coaching staff and a new defensive system (one that doesn't play to our weaknesses)---one that gives Igor who is one of the NHL's best goalies more support. Younger players getting better.

Pens fan here. Rangers keep the pick and run a risk next year of a lottery pick. Rangers may think next year is better but if it isn't, hard to justify losing that pick with nothing to show for it. See what the lottery brings but an admission of sending that pick to the Pens this year is not great PR. But it is the smart move if the pick is a lottery pick next year is much worse PR.

Agree with you wholeheartedly.

The only way I'm ok with keeping the pick this year is if a whole new front office and coaching staff is being brought in to run the show.

I don't want Drury in charge of another lottery pick selection. Heavy furniture can and should be moved around this summer and there's a good chance this team will be worse next year.

If they thought next years draft was so much better, and would prefer to have the pick next year, why wouldn't they have just top 5 protected the pick instead of top 13 protected it?

That would yield almost the exact same result without the optics of expecting to be worse.

The only real difference is this way they can theoretically trade this years pick prior to the draft and then give up next years since it's the only one remaining. I think this board might lose their minds though if they gave up this years and next years pick.

11th pick it is. The Rangers will keep the pick. They negotiated the trade knowing full well what the draft pool looked like. When you are my age, you want the asset sooner than later.
Impatience is a poor way to run a team.

Yes he should be fired.

What does a move from 11 to 1 look like? 11 + Gabe?
See, I think this would be nuts. Gabe is two years closer and may be better than the 1OA will turn out to be. Even when there is a consensus you can end up with Laf, and this draft has no one projected as a sure fire star. And addding the 11th pick? I would certainly not.

There’s a reason the 1OA might be available… and that’s because there’s no sure fire difference maker available in it.
