I like this guy a lot. Not huge at 6-1, 200...but hits like a truck...fights a ton...seems to be a great skater...really nice shot...seems to have good offensive skill. McKenzie has him ranked #18 ovr right now too, so right in our range.

Left-handed shot, so he could pair w Seider or ASP...make Johansson your utility man/5th D...able to step in for anyone and to play w anyone in the top-4 in case of injury.

I would say he's the toughest guy in the draft, and he'd definitely does fight a tonne for a current junior guy. Basically all his fights are because he absolutely crushed someone too. It really all depends where the wings are drafting, but they're back at a point where they're not really desperate for a certain position, but I would say LHD is higher on the needs list.

A player with his style of play would fit in really nice in Detroits defence in a few years

He's certainly my "swing for the fences" pick. If he slips, I think he'd be a good pick. Though Yzerman is a big "character" guy and this kid seems to have issues in that department.

For years, and every draft, I always asked for my "intelligent, pass-first playmaking C, who deceptively good at defense but is undervalued due to the fact that he is probably slightly undersized or lacks obvious goal scoring". Whose my guy this year? I need names!

His play in Russia this year scares the hell out of me. He sounds like a headcase. I think you need to do a ton of diligence on him to know what you are getting. I think will have similar options with less risk at the end of the day.

I wouldn't put too much stock into the stats in Russia, most scouts still agree he has top 5 skill in the draft. The issue is that he was supposedly being pissy that he was sent down from the KHL and was refusing to play or something along those lines. So the attitude is the major concern.

I am putting stock in the reports of his play in Russia that he was completely checked out and disengaged, not in his stats. I don't doubt he is skilled. If he is a problem for an organization at 18, however, chances are he will be a problem at 25. Regardless of how skilled he is, he needs to put so much work in before he can even think about sniffing the NHL and I don't really trust kids of this profile to do the requisite work. If he got sent down and owned the MHL it would be a totally different story.

I’m as concerned about the skating as I am the potential character concerns.

I’ve seen some clips of his goals in the USHL and on one hand, it’s impressive how easy he makes everything look… but on the other hand his feet look pretty damn heavy.

Ryabkin will slide to the 2nd round. I would take a flyer on him there but not in the 1st.
