2025 DRAFT Discussion

BULTMAN , PETERS , PRONMAN , WHEELER PODCASTING FROM THE COMBINE TODAY . 1 HOUR :
Just listened to this and a mailbag question was on which center who is ranked between 12-20 would be most likely to stick at center and one of the guys said Braeden Cootes. So if we want to do a bit of succession planning for Larkin this may not be a bad pick. He's a touch under 6 feet tall, but he's fairly well regarded by EP.

Sounds a bit like Larkin, probably not quite as fast, but elite motor and energy. They suggest he will outplay his draft position quickly.

He was only a PPG player for Seattle, so there's legit concern about his skill, but he had solid point production over a short playoff run. Turned 18 four months ago, so his stats next season will be his 18 year old season, so he could pop.

LOVE center depth .
from dobber :

January 2025 – Braeden Cootes is a player NHL teams will have a lot of time for on draft day. What Cootes brings to the table is both obvious and projectable. He plays with absolutely relentless pace, both with the puck, and maybe even more so without it. It’s genuinely shocking the amount of energy that one player can expend on one shift.

Cootes also has a lot of skill, giving him the ability to drive the middle of the ice off the rush. He’s got quick twitch hands, a hard shot, and a snappy release. Cootes also has some solid playmaking instincts, though they’re not put to particularly good use on this particularly poor Seattle team. Cootes’ ceiling might not pop off the page, but his combination of intensity and skill should propel him into an NHL middle-six role. Luke Sweeney

He is not bad , but kinda boring. He is kind like Kasper , just smaller and not as good.

As I've mentioned previously, I am skeptical about our NA scouting. Most seem to think taking Brady Cleveland with the 47OA pick was crazy. So I do like to compare what others think about certain prospects. I hope this is OK with you.
The question does not implicate the Redwings scouting department at all. The question was directed towards you and your opinion on the players available to be drafted. Again why would player rankings factor into your analysis of these players? If you don't think we should take Fiddler at 13, I presume it is because there are a host of other players you like significantly more who should be available at 13, not because of some draft ranking prepared by god knows who.

I haven't taken enough of a look at Fiddler to have an opinion worth sharing. When it comes to our Euro scouting I always trust them, I don't care what anyone thinks about their selections. I just don't know that our NA scouting is any good. I do like the Max Plante pick, but that's maybe one potential 60 point forward since Larkin was drafted 11 years ago. We flat out suck at drafting and developing d-men out of North America.

I don't really have anything else to say on the topic of Fiddler. If we do draft Fiddler I will be sure to take a close look at him and offer up a substantive opinion.

EP has him 6th, so if he falls I'd be intrigued. But I doubt a d-man with his profile in a draft with few high end d-men makes it to 13.

A lot of the mocks I've seen post worlds have him making it past Detroit ... I'm with you- I think he's gone before then, which I'm fine with as it means Eklund or someone else is likelier to be there.

Jackson Smith measures in at 6-4. I know he had a poorish Worlds, but I suspect a 6-4 D who skates well is going to be very tempting for a few teams right in front of Detroit.

Horcoff is a darn monster and early reports have him as one of the stars of physical testing so far. Probably going to play at 6’5 and 220lbs

If he is there in the 2nd round…. I wouldn’t be surprised if that is our pick.

Not a surprise given his dad. He's had access to pro level training since he got out of diapers. Big question is how much development is left for him? Could be close to a finished product.

There were a couple of statements in the post so I will address them both.

1) I don't know why he dropped.
2) I don't know, but I have a thing for big right-handed shot defenseman. I know that we have a couple of RHS in the system but I like his offensive reads and he seems fairly good at this first job which is helping keep the puck out of the net. I just like him.
