2025 DRAFT Discussion

On draft day Rasmussen wasn't exposed yet just like McQueen isn't yet either. Just like every other prospect who looks like they are sure picks like Zadina etc. It is fair to be fearful of a player like this. He doesn't look like he is a game changer or something we need. I rather push my chips in to get O'Brien or Frondell. We have assets to move up. Trade to Seattle Berniers + #6 (draft Frondell or O'Brien) for Larkin + #9-13. We have to get creative.
On draft day literally no one talked about Rasmussen having good hands or a good shot. I'm not saying McQueen is a for sure prospect or anything, but if he doesn't hit he isnt going to be a player that reminds you all that much of Rasmussen at all.

For starters, McQueen has an actual mean streak to go with his size. McQueen has as many fights in junior (despite missing time) as Rasmussen has in his entire junior + NHL career. McQueen has a shot. Go read scouting reports on Ras at draft time, no one even mentions his shot, they mention he goes to the dirty areas.
Ras had a back issue while in GR, McQueen has a back issue as well. Add in height and skating issues, yeah, that is how I came up with the comp. Didn't think it was that far off, jeez.
So they each had a back issue and are big basically is the comp? Its pretty far off lol.

I dont think either guy has/had skating issues at all either

He'll be fine. That injury is not a particularly big deal. He's going top 15. If the Wings want him, they'll have to take him with their first pick. Talent falls off very quickly in this draft.

Partial achilles tears are horrible injuries to athletes, only behind complete ACL/MCL tears and complete achilles tears in terms of gravity for ligament issues.

Peyton Krebs had a near-complete achilles tear in his draft year, and went from borderline-elite skating to NHL-average in one go.

Bear is a great prospect, but his already-middling skating pre-injury combined with some injury concerns and his smallish stature make him far from a sure-thing.

I had him just outside the top-10 before the injury, now I'd have him 16th.

As for talent falling very quickly in this draft, well, I disagree.

There are players in the top-20 this year that I am very high on, and from 20-to-30 there are some very interesting guys too (Potter, Kindel, Spence, Hensler, and more). I also like a lot of the guys that will be available 30-50 too.

Where I think the draft actually starts to pale in comparison to other years is after the top-50. But overall, I think people are overreacting when they call this year's draft weak outright.

In my opinion this draft is more-or-less "average" as far as drafts go, and nowhere near to "2012-bad" as some posters have said.

We’re gonna draft 13-15, exactly what I thought. Unf***ing believeable, literally the worst way for the season to end. Another two way defensive forward 3rd liner with great hockey iq and character. Wonderful.
Yup. Like I said, it’s a shame we can’t roll five lines and four D-pairs!

Keeping Lalonde would have kept us at ~4th overall. SJS, CHI and NSH are the ultimate bad we couldn't be anyhow.

That was the ultimate worst Detroit result from this season. 4th overall.

Would that be any better?

Yes! We could have drafted an actual game changer. Someone who moves the needle. We're not gonna get that at 13. Will be another depth guy.

lmao not saying I agree or disagree but I find that pretty funny considering you have the guy drafted at 17 in your profile pic

There are no game changers in this draft other than Schaefer. Even Misa and Martone project as decent 1st liners or great 2nd liners.

Frondell has an outside chance at it, but nobody else obviously has that trajectory. It's not a great draft.

If there was any draft to not care much about, it's this one. Losing out on Demidov last year and Michkov in 2023 is far, far, far worse.

I'm warming up to Carbonneau
He's my target in our range. Has electric skill, high-risk but could be a game breaker if the other parts of his game are fixed, which is what we need. Desnoyers, Frondell and Eklund are the only ones in the top 10 that even excite me. I don't see it with the top end guys this year. Martone looked like he could be something special early on but has not kept that level of play up down the stretch.

Based on this analysis this sounds like the type of player we will draft. Middle 6 grinder. Not to shit on this kid but I'm sick of these types of prospects. I want some HIGH END offensive skill in the pipeline now.

If ppl want those they shouldn’t have cheered meaningless games that will now likely fetch us another bottom 6 guy at 13 unless we luck out

Few less wins and we get a shot at a desnoyers over a likely penalty killer ...oh well

If you don’t think Bear has high end skill then I don’t think you know what high end skill is.

He’s more talented and smarter than many players ranked in the top 15 of this draft. Before his injury I had him somewhere between 6 and 10.

Seems like a grinder to me coming off a major injury. We probably are in love with him..

Id be very happy with a Kashawn Aitcheson, Jakob ihs Wozniak combo for our 1 two selections. Thou I cant see how Jakob lasts to our 2nd round.

Other than missing out on O'brien and Misa who I think are the only two game breaking talents that play the game the right way, there really isnt much big time talent available in this years draft.

And a lot of people are iffy on O'Brien.
