NHL 2025 DRAFT - Bruins pick 7th III

Reading the interesting Athletic article today on who goes top 5-6

There are some scouts/executives who have Hagens as high as 2 but multiple anonymously polled behind O’Brien, and a healthy McQueen.
O’Brien has big fans and Hagens size and how he holds up in playoffs where a guy like Martin resonates. Lot of consistent love for Desnoyers.

Misa a couple have over Schaefer going first but a few think he’s not all that and he shows up 4-5

Bottom line it’s basically going to be what is your preference

O’Brien and Martin do show up here. O’Brien as high as best F ….Martin looks like the 4th or 5th in some

I really hope it stays this confusing for entertainment purposes

Could Hagens slide to 7???
I really do not care how big or small the player is.
I want someone who will compete and battle in the corners and not give up on the puck.
Whether you are 5'11 175 lbs ( Hagens) or Martin at 6'0 178 lbs, do you really think 1" and 3 lbs matter? This is why I love Eklund, he will battle all day long for the puck and is not afraid to take a hit or throw a hit to get the puck.

If you want to know how nuts the top of the draft, read Corey Pronman’s article today where he gets anonymous quotes from scouts and executives. I’ve never seen the top of the draft so all over the place.

A few other quotes from Pronman's anonymous quote article I thought were interesting. In response to which players were being overrated by public lists:

Scout 1: “Victor Eklund. He’s a small winger without elite offense, those types tend to fall. He’s top 10 on almost every list, but I can almost guarantee that won’t happen on draft day.”

Scout 6: “Radim Mrtka. He’s not that smart or competitive. I get he’s big and skates well, but he’s nothing special other than that. More of a teens pick than a top-10 type.”

Scout 7: “Kashawn Aitcheson has major questions for us in terms of his hockey sense and decisions. You love how hard he plays, but he’s not that big either. He’s good but nothing special.”

Executive 2: “People need to slow down on the Brady Martin hype because he had a good U18s. He’s super likable because he hits a lot of guys and has skill, but he’s not a smart player and probably a middle-six wing in the NHL.”

Executive 3: “Desnoyers and Frondell are both being oversold a bit. They’re good players who compete but don’t have high-end hockey sense. They are second-line centers at best in the NHL. I would much rather bet on guys like Hagens, Martone or O’Brien.”

Interestingly, Desnoyers was also mentioned by a scout as being underrated (along with Reid, McKinney, Fiddler, Carbonneau, & Nesbitt).
I don't know if it is always like this every year but It seems like teams are all over the place on where they have players ranked. At the very least, it should make for an interesting draft day.

The trouble is, yes it does matter at the NHL level. That’s why the average height is 6’1” and the average weight is 201. That doesn’t exclude a smaller guy from being successful (Brad Marchand), but it seems to make it less likely. Especially when you are considering the physicality of a player as a prime attribute.

Does it matter enough to have people drooling over a guy that hasn’t been able to show a lot (right or wrong) because he’s 6’5”?….I don’t think so. But you’d be remiss to not wonder if physical play exhibited by and under average-sized player in lesser leagues can possibly be replicated against the biggest & strongest in the world.

I'll throw Haoxi Wang into your list in the second round. Huge left handed defenseman committed to BU after only playing hockey since he was 12.

I like his mobility, but has virtually no offensive game.
This the dude that’s like a condor with a huge wingspan if I remember correctly.

A first three drafts from now and a second doesn’t come close to getting you to 10-11
Normally I would agree but this draft is weaker and after 8 things really start to even out. You might get someone to bite that FL will drop in a couple years and that 1st could be top 10 while also bagging a 2nd and Lysell. I think you’ll see a lot of trading down this draft.

Pronman`s anonymous quote list was clearly done by an uncle sitting by the beach with 8 beers in his pie hole. Having seen Mrtka live a number of times, saying he`s "not that smart or competitive " is simply laughable. I wouldn`t take him at 7 but..

I am totally with Executive 3 on his comments. Bet on the players with the highest-end potential. Don't spend the 7th pick on a 2nd-line or 2nd-pair player. Hagens, Martone, and O'Brien have 1st-line potential. I like Martin and Eklund, but I don't see them as 1st-line players, so I would pass on them as well as on Desnoyers and Frondell. And don't trade the pick!!!

I read it ~ complete nuts
This could be wild

I read the whole thing was like getting a Pu Pu platter and everyone going for something different; all scouts/ execs seems to have different top threes yet every player is liked a lot by more than one person

What if the 3 players you think are first line players are gone? It is possible that this staff thinks a different 3 players are first line, or 5 players are and someone like Desnoyers or Frondell is .

These quotes are interesting, but we have to be careful to not just assume that one anonymous scout is correct even if they may echo what someone already believes

This is also why saying just pick BPA is so bloody difficult

Be fun to create a thread where we have to guess the top 10, most correct wins, where #10 is worth 10, #9 is worth 9, up to #1 being worth 1.

Or just most correct picks wins.

I see Desnoyers as Bergeron and I watched him a handful of times- Eklund a more advanced in career Marchand

Martin I have no idea but he got a lot of free meals

Martin's 100 points in 109 career OHL regular season games is not moving the needle for me.
I wish the kid well, hope someone else takes him before 7.
There are more offensive talented players vs him at 7.
Martone had a pt on 35% of Brampton's goals
Martin had a pt on 31% of Soo's goals

I'm not saying he's as good offensively as Martone, but looking just at points, when one team scored a full goal and a half more per game is a bad way to scout.

not true, there are loads of NHL players who wouldn`t so much as lay a glove on the defender and do a fly bye or try to stick check the D man

What I`m more impressed with is he didn`t stand and admire his hit, he immediately busted his ass backchecking, THAT is what coaches/scouts will look at when assessing along with the physical aspect of his game
I know. What I am saying is any player that did throw a hit there would have flattened him.

I already feel for Brady if the Bruins do indeed take him, he will never live up to what this fanbase will expect from the next "Sam Bennett / Tom Wilson"
