Seedings and rankings are designed to favor the better players or teams. So I agree a winner mentality is to beat everyone. But I don't think a winner mentality is to finish third or fourth in your pool and have three hard opponents for gold.
I'll use tennis... I've never heard Djokovic say I'd like to play the second ranked player in the round of 64 at a grand slam.
I think Canada hickey has an unbelievable winners mentality and I seriously doubt anyone in hockey cabada is upset about playing Denmark in round one. I'd say that is mission accomplished. Win the pool and hope for an easier draw. Save energy for semis and medal round.
Preferring a higher ranking from playing well and being rewarded with a potentially easier draw, to me, is a winner mentality.
