2025 26 Roster…too Soon

With the CAP going up every year for the foreseeable future 15 a year for Marner or 12.5 for Ehlers will be a bargain . Ehler's screws a division opponent and it's always nice to shaft the Leaf's with Marner .
Ehlers projected contract is 8.1 X 6 years. I get a non-contender like the Hawks may have to pay a premium, but not 50% above market. Ehlers is a 60 pt winger....basically Teuvo who took 3 years @ 5.4 last Summer as a UFA. In no world is Ehlers getting 12.5 and the Hawks probably shouldn;t be signing him at any price and just let the kids play and hope a couple of Moore, Lardis, Kantserov, etc can turn into a 60 pt winger on an ELC where you are not tied to a boat anchor contract.

We're not getting Peterka for Murphy or for Reichel and Teravainen.

We're also not trading either of our own 1sts over the next two years for him.
Kevyn Adams is in a tough spot. Nobody seems to know what they need because they’ve been stuck for so long.

It’s like they want to trade Peterka for another Peterka. Good luck with that happening.

Man that would be so awesome if we can trade Murphy, Reichel, and a late 1st to the Sabers for Peterka.

Peterka doesn't seem to actually want out, he just wants money. So that's an odd fit that oddity since Buffalo has cap anyway. I dont think he'll be traded at all.

Bynam for sure wants out because he wants PP time

How protected? Top 3? Top 5? 10?

Arent you a fan of Lawrence in next year's draft? Do you prefer Peterka to him?

I'm all for trading 1sts to aquire some young forwards, but not with our own 1sts, the ones Buffalo would want.
I'd be fine with top 5 protection.

Peterka is a 70 point player, and only 23.

Players taken, let's say, 6-10 in a draft... how many turn into 70 point players?

2019 = 1
2018 = 1
2017 = 0
2016 = 2
2015 = 3
2014 = 1

Odds aren't great for finding a 70 point player in that 6-10 range... so I'd do top 5 protection but not top 10.

Blashill made maybe an interesting comment on the podcast with Zawaski that he believes a big UFA add should come when the team is looking for more of that final piece of the rebuild, so hopefully thats an indication that they plan to be patient this summer and not go crazy in UFA

Hence not being in on Marner. Still need a linemate for Bedard though

Wasn’t this idea hinted at by Davidson recently too, or am I just thinking of someone reading tea leaves?

Either way, seems like there’s nothing significant coming unless it’s a trade for other young players.

Not expecting anything big in FA but guys like Brazeau, Marchand, Robinson who can help bottom 6 would be welcome additions. Then I would expect a linemate for Bedard to be added via a trade

yeah but the media seems to continue speculating on this 'big move, be aggressive' offseason, maybe its for clicks...hearing it again from blashill was nice and hopefully an indication that it really is their intention to stay patient

The goal isn't to have a 70 point player, it's to have a competitive playoff team. I think people underestimate how frequently scoring wingers become available.

On July 24, 2021, Reinhart was traded by the Sabres to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Devon Levi and a 2022 first-round pick.
Look at that trash package that a team that finished 4th in President's Trophy standings in 2020-21 for a player that they got whose been PPG and 8th in aggregate goals for them since acquiring. A pick that was going to be like 24-32 plus an admittedly high-end goalie prospect that they drafted in the 7th round a year earlier that had a glowup season in NCAA [oh wait the glowup season actually came after as he didn't even play in 2020-21, but he did play really well for Canada at the WJC].

Patience can suck but it's the key.
