I'm really curious to see how free agents view different teams this summer. I could see how guys destined for short term deals like Tavares, Duchene, and Nelson would look to join a contender because they don't have rings yet. But for the guys like Marner, Boeser, and Ehlers who are likely to sign for 7 years, the Hawks may be quite the destination. Yeah, year 1 won't be great but by the time years 3 and 4 come around, Chicago will be looking mighty good.
Plus the original 6 heritage, soft media, Chicago being a very livable city all help. I'm not huge on Marner but think about it. If you're him and Toronto ends up not working out, where would be a more attractive place to sign for the next 7 years? Probably none of the Canadian teams. The low tax teams like Dallas, Florida, and Tampa are already capped out. Wanna live in Detroit? Wanna be part of the Rangers or Bruins mess? Colorado could work for a couple of seasons but watch out once McKinnon's speed starts to waver a bit as they have no prospects or draft capital to speak of. Carolina? Maybe. The Ducks have prospects and cap space but do you want to play for that guy and pay California taxes? How about Buffalo? Just kidding.
I might look like a fool this summer but it will be interesting.
