OT: 2024 Washington Commanders thread: change we can believe in!

  • Xenforo Cloud upgraded our forum to XenForo version 2.3.4. This update has created styling issues to our current templates, this is just a temporary look. This next one will be one for the ages, especially since both quinn and campbell will be going for it on 4th down nearly every drive. If we can hold them to a few field goals in the redzone we'll have a chance, since we know they'll be able to drive down the field each possession.

The one good thing here is all the pressure is on detroit, like others have said we're playing with house money at this point.

I've seen a lot of Loins games this year. DET defense is famously banged up. That can be exploited obviously.

Goff has only been sacked 31 times. This may come as a surprise but JD5 is 4th worst in sacks in the league at 48. By comparison, Lamar has 24.

If WFT can control the clock with Ekeler/Robinson combinations while looking for the vulnerable subs in the defense, and JD5 taking off on foot a little sooner rather than taking the sack, they can set the offense up to hang with DET.

The DET offense runs through Gibbs/St. Brown but getting pressure on Goff has to be the top priority.

LaPorta has been underutilized this year.

DET are also likely to have a few trick plays up their sleeves. WFT should, too.

Reminded me that Rypien was only sacked seven times back in the SB winning '91 season. That was a baller O line.

I wake up this morning feeling very grateful. I was in high school the last time they won a playoff game. Aside from the remarkable on field turnaround, it’s just nice having a team that you enjoy supporting and feel like they’re doing things the right way. If you would have told us three years ago that in 2024-25 we’d have no Snyder, a top five GM that is universally respected around the league, a transcendent rookie talent at QB, and that we’d be on prime time two weeks in a row during the playoffs you’d have been laughed out of the proverbial building.

I am soaking all of this in. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a new golden era for this franchise — lord knows no other fan base deserves it more for enduring as much bullshit and terrible football as we have for the last 25 years — but I’m also very much enjoying the moment we’re in.

9 of the last 10 Washington football playoff matchups (since the Super Bowl) have been against Tampa, Detroit, and Seattle (other vs GB), 10 of 12 as well since they played Detroit in the NFC Championship game that year

Did you watch him against Brown before he got hurt? Not sure he won a single route. Brown had his way with him.

Dude, the difference is that he's right there, every time. He's clearly still hampered by a tough injury, and Brown and Evans are literally the two toughest body/mind/tenacity combos in the league, probably since Megatron. Very smart, very savvy, very physical, with the rules stacked in their favor. Playing them tight is all you can do, and most guys simply can't do that. Lattimore can.

He's going to take penalties, especially against receivers like those. You gotta toe the PI line to take balls away from those guys. What we'll notice over time, if he manages to get and stay healthy, is that QBs won't throw his way nearly as much as they do/would versus other DBs. That's what he brings.

I will say that I think Lattimore has forfeited his right to have an offseason. The medical staff should be glued to him like he is to receivers. If we have to send him to some Nepali shaman or yogi medicine man or whatever, DO IT. Gotta get this guy squared away for next year.

And a false start right there.

As for Wylie’s penalty, there’s got to be a way to prevent that penalty when lineman are playing an option.

JD's tendency the last couple weeks has been to run, especially late in games. And that's just more so than usual, cuz he's been more apt to run than not when his first option or two aren't there. Wylie going straight upfield like he did was definitely premature, but when your QB bails out this much, adjusting to help him when he does is a veteran move.

Agree. Brian Robinson hasn't been good ever since that 2 fumble game. He doesn't make anyone miss and he isn't breaking tackles like he was. Rodriguez out-played him a few weeks back. BROB shouldn't be getting this many touches or snaps at this point.

Yeah, I'm all for seeing more of Rodriguez. He was real good for us last year. Tough runner and very good blocker. Ekeler and McNichols aced him out of the blocking back role, but with BRob struggling -- and let's remember that he's been in and out of the lineup all year, so who knows what's up with him -- remembering that CRod is a good player and not a Rivera virus is probably a good idea.

So let's add running back competition to the offseason to-do list. I don't mind giving Robinson a chance to shore things up, but it shouldn't be his job to lose at this point. Make him earn it next year.

We all saw Daron Payne get his finger stomped on and come off the field. This was the result. Not safe for queasy stomachs.

I have a weirdly similar x-ray from an injury I had, except mine was a compound fracture as well. No idea what recovery looks like for him since there doesn’t seem to be any break and it’s not a dirty wound. I think I was in a hard cast for a month followed by a splint, and my thumb doesn’t bend right anymore since I have four screws.

The dislocation/break isn’t the painful part, it’s the resetting of the bone and the soreness that comes after. If he plays Saturday he’s one tough dude.

McCarthy out…that tells me Jerry probably tried to keep him for like 2 years instead of the 4 McCarthy can get elsewhere….

Skins *HAVE* to easily win the possession clock. Like 36m plus. In order to win.

*UNLESS* they get lucky enough to have 1-2 defense/ST scores? Then maybe possession won’t hurt them.

Brutal…
