Greatest chant in sports!
As an FSU and hometown (closet) Chiefs fan, I relish in your dislike of it.
As would I if the roles were reversed. I totally get it, and I think the sensitivities on things like this are largely overblown, didn't have a problem with 'Redskins' while also being able to admit I get why others don't like it, and so on.
But since we live in a world where it's inappropriate and has to go -- a world where you're basically saying "How could it be hateful? In this instance we're saying that WE are the Redskins! Wouldn't that be hating ourselves?" -- taking ownership of the slur in that way is immediately racial and cultural appropriation. So our fanbase argued, well, what are we appropriating? We don't have an offensive mascot (Chief Zee wasn't official, was he?), our logo is respectful, we don't utilize any other imagery... Aside from the name, all there really is is "braves on the warpath" in the fight song, which isn't bad either.
And still it's all bad because the name is shitty. I get it.
But that tomahawk chop... Dude. That's everything we DIDN'T have going on. All the shit we pointed to and said, "At least we're not doing THAT!" Appropriation all over the place, lots of oddball, makeshift face paint and props. And the chant. That's just f***ed up. Tens of thousands of mostly white people riffing a native chant with the chops 'n props. Nth-level cringe.
And I say this as someone who lives in FSU country, has a niece there right now, went to a couple games since I moved down here, and the chant, live and in person? It's fun. People are having an absolute blast. But we live in Butthurt Wokeville now, so cringe it is.
