They wanted to completely separate from NA imagery though which is sad but understandable. They didn't want to open up that can of worms. People are still upset over Blackhawks / Braves / Chiefs etc...and those names were hardly as offensive as Redskins
Is the "they" in this case the Snyder regime? I haven't heard this claim attached to the Harris Group, they've been pretty tight lipped about the name change thing.

The Blackhawks, Braves and Chiefs don't sound anywhere close to capitulating to the small protests. We also know, Snyder didn't give in to protests, as much as he just tried to deflect attention from his awful scandal ridden tenure.

I'd politely disagree the Redskins are the only one out of these that is the most epithet worthy.

Now I do dislike that it seems like pro sports seemingly can't use any NA name that would honor/celebrate/acknowledge them.

They was the Snyder group, but once everyone started protesting racial inequality the Redskins and the Indians were the first to go. Nobody else changed their name because they weren't offensive enough. Braves tributed proud NA warriors and Chiefs the same thing, those were not slurs or outdated slang.

I wish they could have kept the NA imagery and even the logo and uniforms but sadly the team wanted a whole new start. Harris and co yes have been keen to tribute the past even inviting a lot of the alumni back. But sadly this is what they purchased, a team that for the moment rebranded out of the NA imagery because Snyder and company didn't want the headache of having to deal with it. If it were up to me I'd have kept it all and just changed the name but it's not.

I think if they had kept the old Washington helmets and NA imagery people would have still been upset anyway. There is a real movement and I've seen these people online on this very board complain about how "Native Americans shouldn't be mascots" or the whole idea of them being mascots was silly, even though we literally have Vikings, "Fighting Irish" (offensive!?), Texas Rangers (racist group of "policemen" roaming Texas) etc. I doubt the team wants any more of that trouble, people were going to protest the old uniforms anyway if they still wore them. Harris has said the name is never coming back but if they rebranded those unis they have now for a more NA flair I wouldn't mind. Said time and time again, the old Spurrier 70th? anniversary Spear unis were kickass but sadly can't ever be used anymore.

Yeah, easily the most offensive thing still going in this discussion is the tomahawk chop fan celebration. But I guess that gets a pass because who's going to police fans? :dunno:

Anyone catch the Redskins reference in the new Alex Cross series on Prime? That was pretty cool.

Yeah, every time that chant breaks out, I want to hit that entire stadium in the face. With a meteorite.

Greatest chant in sports!

As an FSU and hometown (closet) Chiefs fan, I relish in your dislike of it.

As would I if the roles were reversed. I totally get it, and I think the sensitivities on things like this are largely overblown, didn't have a problem with 'Redskins' while also being able to admit I get why others don't like it, and so on.

But since we live in a world where it's inappropriate and has to go -- a world where you're basically saying "How could it be hateful? In this instance we're saying that WE are the Redskins! Wouldn't that be hating ourselves?" -- taking ownership of the slur in that way is immediately racial and cultural appropriation. So our fanbase argued, well, what are we appropriating? We don't have an offensive mascot (Chief Zee wasn't official, was he?), our logo is respectful, we don't utilize any other imagery... Aside from the name, all there really is is "braves on the warpath" in the fight song, which isn't bad either.

And still it's all bad because the name is shitty. I get it.

But that tomahawk chop... Dude. That's everything we DIDN'T have going on. All the shit we pointed to and said, "At least we're not doing THAT!" Appropriation all over the place, lots of oddball, makeshift face paint and props. And the chant. That's just f***ed up. Tens of thousands of mostly white people riffing a native chant with the chops 'n props. Nth-level cringe. 🫣😜

And I say this as someone who lives in FSU country, has a niece there right now, went to a couple games since I moved down here, and the chant, live and in person? It's fun. People are having an absolute blast. But we live in Butthurt Wokeville now, so cringe it is.

Hate is too strong. I hate the Penguins. This is just an observation. It's more like "oh that's dumb" whenever it comes up.
I wouldn’t expect a fan of a team that didn’t use that chop to not dislike it…..and I wouldn’t have it any other way….combined with the chant….well if you’ve seen it in a playoff game live in person, it’s pretty awesome to behold.

I mean, it's like watching a bunch of old people doing the chicken dance at a wedding. Or trying to rap. I kind of just roll my eyes.
