doesn’t know the rules. No one does. He didn’t stop the goalie from making the save at all. You call that clear cut but Hellebuyck getting shoved four feet out of the way is also clear cut not goalie interference?
There is a rule book out there...

69.3 Contact Inside the Goal Crease - If an attacking player initiates contact with a goalkeeper, incidental or otherwise, while the goalkeeper is in his goal crease, and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed (refer to Rule 69.7 for an exception).
The Caps player made incidental contact with the goalie in his crease right before the goal was scored. Clear-cut goalie interference, by the book. No goal.

The Hellebuyck goal falls under the Rule 69.7 exception part of the goalie interference rules:

69.7 Rebounds and Loose Pucks - In a rebound situation, or where a goalkeeper and attacking player(s) are simultaneously attempting to play a loose puck, whether inside or outside the crease, incidental contact with the goalkeeper will be permitted, and any goal that is scored as a result thereof will be allowed.
In the event that a goalkeeper has been pushed into the net together with the puck by an attacking player after making a stop, the goal will be disallowed. If applicable, appropriate penalties will be assessed. If, however, in the opinion of the Referee, the attacking player was pushed or otherwise fouled by a defending player causing the goalkeeper to be pushed into the net together with the puck, the goal can be permitted.
The NHL and refs decided that the contact was incidental as Guhle and Hellebuyck attempted to play the loose puck in the crease. I'm pretty sure they blew that call, because Guhle didn't make any play on the puck and just used his stick to push Hellebuyck into the net, but if the ruling is incidental contact, then that's a legal goal.

People are getting confused by the second paragraph - where you can't push the goalie and the puck into the net simultaneously after the save, but that's not exactly what happened. In the refs'/NHL's eyes Hellebuyck was pushed into the net through incidental contact during pursuit of a loose puck, and then the puck was subsequently fired in.

he's nearing hasek level dominance vs rest of the league. if he doesn't win a cup might be one of the bigger wastes of all-time level's of dominance and differentiators on the ice.

Yes that is the only sad part is we are squandering an all timer in net.

In fairness he hasn’t helped enough in the playoffs so he owns his part but he is in good company. This core is not been built for the playoffs. Thankfully they will get another shot this May at trying to go on a miracle run like St Louis or Washington did vs their normal pathetic post season track records (respectfully)

Yup which is all the more reason why it's hilarious reading some on here advocate rebuild during the offseason. When you have Helle you're not going to rebuild.

They will get their wish when Helle, Scheiefele, and Morrissey age out of relevance in about 3 to 5 seasons. Until then the Jets have some time to get lucky on draft picks, and trades and soften the landing a bit.

Question for you all...

Do you think Connor Hellebuyck will get inducted into the HHOF if he continues this quality of play?
Literally 0 doubt. If he wins the Vezina this year, which he's definitely pacing to do, he'll be the 4th goalie to win a 3rd Vezina Trophy since the meaning of it changed to Most Outstanding Goaltender in 1981.

The other 3 guys who did it were Patrick Roy, Dominic Hasek, and Martin Brodeur.

Once Bob retires and gets in, Thomas will be the only goaltender with more than one Vezina trophy (again, since it changed meaning in 81) to not be in the HHoF. And if he doesn't retire to build a bunker out of political paranoia, he would be in too.

He's also pacing to become the winningest American goaltender ever. He's currently 7th.
