Player Discussion: 2024 Vezina Finalist Connor Hellebuyck

He saved something like 36 goals above average this season. Where do you think the team is with an average goalie?
Their goal differential would be +50 then if you added 36 GA. Which is roughly at Dallas' level.

If I was certain they could play that way every year, sure, but I'm not. I think this team is the Minnesota Wild with an elite goaltender (during the season). I'm not sure the team is better without Hellebuyck on the team.

I agree most years average goaltending be good. But this past year defensively and offensively they could over come it imo.

Helle looked like he turned his brain off in OT and just played hockey.
The Jets skaters deserve props. They have limited the shots all series. 9 in the two OTs last night. 13 in the final 3. Standardizing at per 60 (to account for the OT mins) they're giving up 19 SOGS at home This PO's.

Helly in all road games had to be better.

But just to calm the myth of every goal scored on helly is a bad goal given up by him.

Game 7
3 goals againts

first goal
He made 2 moves to try to save the goal but the Blues players just had too much time and space. Helyl made the effort.

second goal
it hit Josh skate blade and rocketed

3rd goal
it hit Schenns toe skate and rocket up again

On Binnington
3 of 4 goals scored on him was deflections and redirected.. what does any goalie got to do on this situations right?

but
the 1st Perfetti goal if that happened on Helly? We call that out of position and a bad goal.

There was different postures in Helly’s first half of the game vs last half and OT. But even earlier he was making good saves

This was his best game overall out of all the games.

JUST SO HAPPY for Helly.

Yeah he really had an extremely unlucky series, too. But, anyone who tries to say he was playing at the level he needed to is fooling themselves.

You could tell by the way he was handling the puck he was in his own head. Indecisive, slow to act and making bad decisions. It's not a reach to suggest that indecision and lack of confidence permeated his whole game.

I'm just hoping the second half of game 7 reminded him that he can play well in the playoffs.

Yup. He was playing too deep in his net and not on his angles.

He seemed to rectify that the back half of game 7 so hopefully we get vintage Helle going forward.

Being the underdogs is likely a blessing in disguise.

First goal in game 7 was beyond belief, a collective brain fart.
Helle had a rough series but the whole team looked off until funny enough OT
Perhaps the whole team resets.

I like the Helly video in one of the sports news showing breakdown of him in the 3rd and OT.

That was a confident goalie. The way he was bossing his positioning.
The misque in the back of the net and the puck went to the front. When he made the save. That was Patrik Roy butterfly stand. Not saying he is, just saw it on that moment.

and yes the other times before except in spurts not so confident. When you want to do better sometimes and you over think , many times it doesnt end up good. He needs to let his ability take over.
