Varsho's OPS+ in 2022 would have been the 2nd best of Devon White's career.
It's amazing how time rounds off the rough edges of sports stars. White was always a brilliant fielder but for his last 4 years in Toronto his OPS+ was 98, he was prone to annual long stretches of awful hitting, and his performance in the leadoff spot (justifiably) took a lot of criticism. We really should have been batting Alomar leadoff, Olerud 2nd, and White should have been hitting 6th-8th.

The only significant difference between Kiermayer and Varsho is power. Otherwise they bring essentially the same attributes as players. Keep in mind that Kiermayer passed through waivers only a week ago with no takers. Now he’s obviously older than Varsho but it speaks volumes to how most of the league values defensive specialists.
The blue jays became obsessed with outfield defense after the humiliating almost comical collision between Springer and Bo in the playoffs resulting in the team blowing an 8 run lead. The psychological scar from that singular event has tainted their thinking process ever since.
White was the better hitter by every metric including OPS+. You can say that John Olerud was better than Ted Williams because of one great season but that doesn’t make it true.
What it does tell you is that Atkins overpaid for Varsho when he acquired him at his offensive peak. Now they have virtually no catcher to replace Jansen.

Kiermaier vs Varsho in 2024 isn’t even close to resembling the same player. You’re completely off your rocker.
Never mind the fact that you missed Kiermaier being one of the most valuable CFers in his prime. He’s 5th in fWAR among CFers from 2014-2024.
So which is it? Kiermaier is one of the best CF in baseball or he’s a loser compared with Varsho? Can’t be both.
The only significant difference is slugging %. I.e power numbers. The below average on base numbers are common to both. Neither should be batting higher than 8th in the lineup on a good team.

Kiermaier has been one of the best CF in baseball over the last ten years.
Those things are both true.
Kiermaier is still one of the best defensive CF in the league. Not as good as he was in his prime to be sure but well above average range.
It’s his batting numbers that have fallen off a cliff because of his bad back.

Not sure about Vladdy. Sign him to 30m or trade him for a boatload? I think someone would give up a ton for him. He is a one of a kind hitter if he keeps hitting like this

Post haircut Vladdy has been great. He couldn't hit a fastball for power in the first couple months.
Not sure what he did, but he adjusted, unlike some others.
I see he’s taking to EE often. I can’t recall anyone talking to Mattingly on the bench.

Funny that the two guys having the big resurgences the last little while are always seen talking to Hague and Edwin rather than the offensive coordinator and hitting coach.
Whether it's now or in the offseason, dumping the latter two for the former two is such an easy and obvious way to change the direction of this team.

Nobody wants to take on what's left of prorated the salary, they would have to release him so someone can take him for nothing.

Heh, Jays get the sweep of the Rangers. Thats what can happen when you hit some homers and the pitching gives you a chance.

The minute that the players know they’re either auditioning for a trade or a full time spot in the lineup next season they start looking like a playoff team.. lol.

I think KK is done. His back is a complete mess. Might get on as a 4th outfielder at best.
I think one game is the definition of small sample size.
Are we going to judge Schneider based solely on his first 30 games last season? No. Because that would obviously be an unrepresentative sample size.
My point stands. Varsho has a declining On base % over multiple seasons and he still needs to work on making contact with pitches up in the zone.
The only way you can carry Varsho in the lineup and maintain a semblance of offense is to find two other outfielders who can mash the ball consistently as protection for Vladdy. Then you tuck Varsho away in the 8th or 9th spot in the lineup without killing too many rallies.
That means replacing Schneider and Springer with better bats.
Fun fact: the Yankees have 9 players with at least 200 PA. FIVE of them have a lower OPS than Varsho.
Funnier fact. Varsho’s OPS+ is 91. I.e. 9 points below average.
When you have a team of players whose OPS+ are below 100 then you’re likely not making the playoffs.
Without Vladdy and Horwitz this team would be in last place.
