Not surprised just frustrated a bit for having seen this once great franchise pick top 5 for three straight years. I do believe Hughes and Gorton have a plan.

The reality of the NHL in the post-05 lockout era is that if you don’t draft well, which usually comes with drafting early, you’re not going to compete and be a great franchise.

The only reason we had any semblance of success in the last 30 years has largely been on the shoulder for other worldly goaltending and catching lighting in a bottle in the 07 draft. Thats it.

A proper rebuild always takes 4/5 years, and here we are going into year 3. If anything we’re ahead of schedule due to some insanely good luck with already having Suzuki, Caufield and Guhle pre-rebuild.

The Suzuki Caufield Guhle insane good luck has been equally offset by the horrendous Price Anderson and Gallagher contracts.
The last two being so toxic we are handcuffed for the duration. Not having competent youth developing in those roles runs contrary to good team building.
We see some good things in bits and pieces not as a whole.

Dach is Monahan's points replacement, so the Habs so far have subtracted from last year unless Dach just crushes it
I forgot about Newhook who also missed alot of time. There's a roster spot open for him with good opportunity especially if he goes on wing (as I suspect).

There's dvorak as well who missed aload of time but I don't think he really fits what Habs are going for

The Price contract has be LTIR’etired: it’s irrelevant to us now.

Anderson and Gallagher are collateral damage from an incompetent previous management. But as far as team building, what youth is ready to step into those roles for next season? Roy will get his chance, as he did this season. Mesar, Beck and Farrell all still need serious seasoning.

There’s no need to do anything with Anderson or Gallagher for this season. They can likely line up Gallagher for an LTIR’etirement of his own this season if he doesn’t perform and if Anderson sucks again this year I fully expect him to be bought out next summer to open up his roster spot.

Really big props to Hughes…these guys know what they're doing.

They're not investing long term dollars into washed up free agents, that money is for core players (see Slafkovky deal).

This has been a great few days if you're a Habs fan…better days are ahead
There is no guarantee of that.
