To be honest, it is time to weaponize the open cap we have, Montreal should offer 1year /10m$ to the forward that has the best chance of being worth a 1st draft pick at the trade deadline. If he turn down go for second best chance and move this way. Who it is does not matter too much, as long as the player can be on the second line.

Why a player would do that instead of a long term contract, because he get traded to a real contender at the deadline, and get overpaid compared to his annual salary. Yes he accept the risk of not having a guaranteed contract.

coveted UFA in their 30s won't go for 1 year 10M$ when they can get 4*6 or 7. That is a huge potential loss of money.

2-3 years at the most would make most sense. Like I could see Stammer go for 3*8M.

20 of which were on the PP. A PP that had a 140 point player running it. We don’t have that. In fact the only thing he does on the PP is sit on the left side waiting for one-timers. So what’s the point of Caufield if we get Stamkos? It would be a poor signing.

We have Dach to ditch him the puck, we could have two legit line on the pp

…and we don’t have a PP problem, obviously.
Where exactly does Stamkos fit on the PP? You’re sitting Caufield? They play the exact same role.

And where is our 140 point player to feed him the puck? Because he’s not getting near those totals without him.

So basically you’d be paying an arm and a leg for a 35 year old that got 40 even strength points last year on a loaded offensive team.

Smart? Not really

You disagree that 39 of his points were on the PP?

He’s 34 years old. He’s dwindling. He’s just a PP specialist now.
He scored 42 points at even strength last year, how many players in MTL hit the mark? 2.

He's still amazing on PP and he produce 5 on 5. For a 2-3 years contract I would gladly take him.

No one.

Tank 1 more year, then start competing when Demidov comes over in 2025.
This!!!

I have tickets that cost me 25k a year. Its hard as hell to sell and its boring to do traffic and shit to see a loosing team against Nashville a tuesday night. But you know what? I dont care, cauze the process is going right.

Id rather finish bottom10 again. Then signed a 34yoStamkos who will « help » us finish 10-15. This wont help long term. Its a difference between a Demidov and a Helenius. Huge.

We need a last hard year. Then we can start going upward when Demidov/Reinbacher/Hutson will have all graduated.

No stupid patchwork that will destroy our chances of a cup.

Yeah he got those totals…on Tampa. How many times does this need to be repeated?

How are we in a position to sign a 35 year old for 2-3 years? What purpose does it serve the Habs and why would Stamkos come here?

People saying we have too many players anyway, that signing an older Top6 player pushes Roy on the 3rd line....why don't we just send him play big minutes in Laval? He can still learn down there, let him dominate, call him up if we have injuries.

Caufield - Suzuki - Slaf
Newhook - Dach - Perron
RHP - Dvorak - Anderson
Armia - Evans - Gally

Oh I agree with that, Stamkos doesn't have any reasons to sign here, that's understandable from his standpoint however I can definitely understand why KH would throw him a solid offer, he's one of greatest leader in the NHL and still produce over 40 goals per season.

If I'm Hughes I'm offering him near 9M per year for a maximum of 3 seasons to help this team to climb in the standing next year. I would also offer Matt Roy a 5 years contract to stabilize our RD position for the future with the departure of Savard and Kovacevic next summer.

I’d be down to give him 7 years if he was 30. But turning 35 halfway through this season and 50% of his production being on an elite PP is just not the right fit in my mind.

Not sure who Montreal is targeting, but I like William Carrier for our 4th line. There's a number of top 6 players available; hopefully we sign one.
That's exactly the type of guy we'd need on an annoying, solid 4th line. I like RHP and Pezz but we'd need better in those chairs, could be a great gap fix until one of Tuch/Florian/Davison emerge. Next season: Carrier-Evans-Heineman?

In 3 years I could see a Florian-Beck-Thorp considering Beck could play 3rd center but we have Kapanen playing almost to 2nd line center standard on 3rd line this pushing Beck on the 4th. Beck has that grind which would make him effective in a 4th line center role while Kapanen may not.

Or Tuch-Florian-Thorp, not going to be fun playing against these boys...

So yeah, Carrier would be cool. I think he'd like that too even if just a 3 year contract.

Can't have Demidov come in as a 20 year old rookie and put him into a situation where he needs to be the difference maker right away.

He needs to come in as a compliment to a team of guys who are hungry and know what it feels like to win.
I don't think he will be in that situation when we have Suzuki/Slaf. Not to mention that we will likely add meaningful additions next year and Hutson/Reinbacher/Mailloux will have another year of development under their belt. Should be a legit threat as a wildcard team and with more growth, hopefully a cup contender down the line.

I would have no problem tanking another year. But I am torn because I wonder how much longer Suzuki and Caufield are going to enjoy it. I think sometimes it's good for the players to experience a little progress.
