When Kane signed with Detroit last year they were battling for a playoff spot. He was coming off of hip surgery and waited to see who was going to give him the best opportunity. It is possible that he could come here but other than Seravalli I haven't heard one insider mention Montreal connected to Kane.

Edit: Just as I finished typing he signs with the Wings lol

You’ve heard me say it a few dozen times on this board for a few months now. That should be enough?

don't see much sense in signing perron, kane or simirlar top 6 wannabe player, even on a shorter deal, since we already have gallagher and anderson to fill that role. i'd give them a chance to play with dach and newhook in hope one of them become a tradeable asset again, which they won't become if they are buried on the fourth line. maybe i'd sign a bottom six, pk specialist to help evans, armia and dvorak and spare suzuki on pk and that's it.

No Seravalli, the next 24 hours won't be that wild. Just a lots of teams signing aging players to stupid contracts and players mostly following the money.
Interesting because Gorton said "We'll see if they think the same way we do."
The good will points Hughes has been accumulating will start to pay off on those 1 year deals.
Players should have no compunction coming here and letting Hughes find a way to place them on a contender when the time comes.

Maybe contenders don't have room for him right now ?

Or he wants to see how every team comes together ?

Im very sceptical, but thats the scenario that probably makes the most sense.
Didn't he wait until the season started to sign last year? He could do the same thing if a contender can't afford the cheap contract he will ask for. I doubt we'd retain on his cheap contract either to facilitate this hypothetical trade, we got other dog shit contracts we should prioritize moving with retention.

I don't think that would be something he'd consider either since I doubt the Wings would have kept him if he wanted to go to a better playoff team at the deadline once he saw how every team came together at that point.

I don't get the fit at all, but it would definitely make the team more exciting to watch if it does happen.

Gallagher and Anderson are not top 6 player and they are beyond overpaid. There is no bounceback for them.

Detroit was in a playoff spot when he signed there.
That’s cause he signed mid-season. Now he’s got to take an educated guess who could make it and who he’d trust to trade him to a contender if he wanted to go. Kent Hughes has a reputation of treating vets right and trading them to places they want. See the case of Jeff Petry among others

I mean, Kane doesn’t make much sense for either party does it?

He’ll likely be asking for 3 years in what will be his last contract. He’ll probably be asking for 6 or 7 mill per, and Montreal is a rebuilding club. Wouldn’t he want to play for a contender at this point? A team like the Rangers makes more sense for him I would think.

Neither will get much TOI nor do they deserve more TOI.
The payday they both get, is beyond awful..............................together 12M in cap space.......the Bergevin Years live on with older players, who no longer deserve that $$$.

That said, I could see a bit of a resurgence in Anderson, if he will become a 3rd line role type player.

As mentioned before, a buy out would be more harmful. Habs can very well keep him for a while since we don't need the cap space, but don't expect us to improve much as a team with this plug taking a roster spot while making all that money. Ditto for Gallagher.

Except it wouldn't be more harmful.

If you trade him this off-season with retention and he get bought out next year, the Habs would end up retaining salary on this stiff for 5 years (also losing the retention slot for that time period).

The Habs are probably going to contemplate a buy out for the last 2 years or final year of his deal depending on what is going on with the team. Once management have completely given up on him he's going to be buried in the minors, so the roster isn't the biggest issue.

What role, he sucks defensively, can't make a pass. Shoots like a turd. Hits once in 5 games . At 5.5m a year to do something that's just awful.

I guess he can skate fast but he doesn't know where to go
