Soto is like Ohtani. Paying him huge money means that our payroll likely goes up by a bit (not his contract, but still up).

If Toronto signs Soto, then either Bo moves to clear up 12M and then the Jays keep a similar number to pre-Soto to potentially spend or they non-tender Romano, move some depth for arms and shop a little lower (ie spend 10-20 instead of 20-30).
Here's the confirmation from the Jays side that Soto won't require balancing completely

If they are going to wait to see if the market breaks their way instead of being aggressive, they aren't going to win a bidding war against NYY/NYM/LAD that way, even if they are willing to go over budget to sign him.

It should be noted that while they are calling it "special allocation", the Jays were looking at ways to drop one of their bigger contracts to take on Shohei (so it is not unreasonable to think that if they sign Soto, they find a way to lose some expected money to keep their flexibility in this market).

So your saying Vlads better then Judge then eh haha. I'd love that combo though would be sic !
I'm not saying that, but Soto and Guerrero do give me more of the Manny-Ortiz vibe because of the Dominican connection and obviously the high-end power and skill.

Soto and Judge are right there with David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez as far as elite AL East duos go, but Ramirez and Ortiz did it year after year after year. The Yankees have to sign Soto to a long-term deal before they reach Manny-Ortiz legendary status—they definitely have the potential to equal or eclipse that duo if they lock in Soto though.

Manny and Ortiz were sick indeed would love for us to have anything even close to what they were for an extended period of time like you mentioned.

Boras will use the Jays and Mets to drive up the price and then he’ll re-sign with the Yankees.

Priorities should be elsewhere.

I hope they go hard after Santander and Adames.

According to the following, the Jays sign;

Tim Dierkes:
Alex Bregman (7 Years, $182M)
Jeff Hoffman (4 Years, $44M)

Anthony Franco:
Anthony Santander (4 Years, $80M)
Tanner Scott (4 Years, $56M)
Kirby Yates (1 Year, $14M)

Darragh McDonald:
Michael Conforto (2 Years, $18M)
Kirby Yates (1 Year, $14M)
Andrew Kittredge (2 Years, $14M)
Spencer Turnbull (1 year, $7M)

Steve Adams:
Carlos Estevez (3 Years, $27M)
Joc Pederson (2 Years, $24M)
Kyle Gibson (1 Year, $13M)

If I had to pick one, I’d go with Franco. Switch hitting OF and only 4 years for Santander who hits well in the AL. I don’t like paying for pen arms but you get an elite arm in Tanner Scott and Yates who I think would be a waste of $14M but it’s only a year.

I’m not a fan of Bregman but $26M a year seems cheap, although I don’t like 7 years and another Astros player from the 2018 team on our team. But I would be intrigued to see what a Bregman-Bichette-Wagner-Guerrero infield could do.

Some predictions regarding former Jays;

Teoscar Hernandez: Three years, $60MM
Tim: Dodgers / Anthony: Reds / Darragh: Royals / Steve: Tigers
Yusei Kikuchi: Three years, $60MM
Tim: Orioles / Anthony: Mets / Darragh: Orioles / Steve: Orioles
Matthew Boyd: Two years, $25MM
Tim: Guardians / Anthony: Cardinals / Darragh: Mets / Steve: Athletics
Danny Jansen: Two years, $20MM
Tim: Cubs / Anthony: Guardians / Darragh: Braves / Steve: Cubs
