I think if you have Soto, Vladdy, and a bounce back Bo, I think that's really good. I like our complimentary pieces like Horwitz, Clement, Kirk, etc. Of course you can add other guys too via trade and FA, and maybe a guy like Barger or Leo has a breakout season. Plus, our rotation is really solid hopefully they stay relatively healthy.

If we could swipe Soto from the Yankees, it's essentially a 16 war swing, before other moves are made.

You absolutely should be in on Soto. Just don't get tunnel vision on him like they did with Shohei last year.

IMO this team is so far away from competing for a championship, big game hunting, kinda feels like using duct tape on the Titanic and being surprised when it still sinks.

23rd in runs scored, 18th in hits, 26th in HR, 23rd in RBI's, 27th in SB, 19th in BA, 22nd in ERA, 13th worse in hits allowed, 9th worse in runs allowed, 2nd worse in HR allowed, 12th worse in walks allowed, 24th in SO opponents, 20th in WHIP, 12th worse BA against.

The team across the board is horrible, we are a month away (Dec 5th) from the 9th year anniversary of Atkins hiring and this is what he has built. After Rogers recent share purchase of MLSE and their purchase of Shaw, they dont have a hell of a lot of liquid capital to be free spenders. This is why I don't think we will be big spenders in the FA market.

Jays had the 7th highest payroll and we are bottom third to bottom quarter in the league in terms of standard stasticial measurements, without significant changes top to bottom, IMO Soto would just be lipstick on a pig.

  1. Mets − $305,624,274
  2. Yankees − $303,322,047
  3. Dodgers − $249,823,654
  4. Phillies − $243,476,617
  5. Astros − $236,524,482
  6. Rangers − $223,355,753
  7. Blue Jays − $221,862,600
  8. Braves − $217,290,000
  9. Cubs − $213,020,500
  10. Giants − $211,044,828

First relatively big news dump of the offseason

- Gerrit Cole has opted out of his deal with the Yankees as pretty much everyone expected. Yankees can void this by adding 1/36 to the 4/144 he already is slated to make. I imagine this won't take long to solve.

- In the same vein, the Yankees have declined their option on Anthony Rizzo. Rizzo was to put it simply, awful for most of 2024 and the postseason. Hasn't been the same since the Yankees medical staff was too stupid to diagnose a concussion for months

- Cody Bellinger has opted into his 25+ million dollar option with the Cubs, much to their fans chagrin. They now have a relative logjam at outfield with several of their top prospects (Pete Crow-Armstrong, Kevin Alcantara and Owen Cassie) being outfielders. Potential trade target perhaps?

- Ha-Seong Kim declined his end of his mutual option and is now a free agent. A guy who is most definitely on my watch list

I believe that Kim is expected to re-sign

No matted what, a Vladdy extension has to be #1 on our offseason list.

Why back up the brinks truck for Soto when they can do something like Jose Iglesias for 15 million over 2 years and then trade him mid season for a decent prospect.

When we made that giant offer to Ohtani, it was with the idea that we would unlock a whole new fanbase and revenue stream, and that local fans won't miss the once in a lifetime opportunity to see the modern day Babe.

Soto wouldn't be nearly the same type of draw and wouldn't unlock these revenue streams. We know from our past that bringing in "regular" superstars didn't really raise attendance all that much. I don't think Shapkins would be able to make the business case on Soto that they did on Ohtani.

Soto is like Ohtani. Paying him huge money means that our payroll likely goes up by a bit (not his contract, but still up).

If Toronto signs Soto, then either Bo moves to clear up 12M and then the Jays keep a similar number to pre-Soto to potentially spend or they non-tender Romano, move some depth for arms and shop a little lower (ie spend 10-20 instead of 20-30).

I don't see how we can afford a Soto contract with what we are going to have to pay Guerrero while we still have Springer, Gausman, and Berrios on big contracts after next year still. If they can dump Springer and are planning to move Bichette I could maybe see a path to have enough money to fit both while still being able to fill other holes but does anyone have faith in our front office being able to do that?

Soto is asking for Ohtani money according to a couple sources out of New York. I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell he gets anything remotely to that as even the Uncle Steves of the world aren't throwing that type of money at a guy like Soto. Ohtani brings the value of being arguably the best hitter in baseball, a top end starting pitcher and probably the most underrepresented part; the free money from having essentially an entire country paying attention to him which lets you make bank of shit like advertisements, endorsements, etc. Soto can do only one of those things.

I wouldn't say no to him by any means, but i feel like the Jays best (and probably most likely) way forward would be to try and land a couple good players rather than a single great one. Say like, a combo of Santander and Bregman. Soto/Vlad surrounded by a bunch of nothing in 2025 doesn't do much when you might be able to do a group of like Bo, Vlad, Bregman, Santander and then whatever cream rises to the top for all the young guys they have.

The Yankees are actually kind of evidence to this point: nasty 1/2 punch in Soto and Judge at the top and the rest of the lineup is mostly trash. If not for Giancarlo Stanton deciding to turn the clock back to 2013 inexplicably they probably lose to KC in the ALDS.
