2024 Rookie Qb Thread

Daniels looks so good. The skill is obvious but he also just seems very composed and is getting more and more confident.
Wonder if that convinces other QB prospects to remain in college to get more reps? Or we chalk it up to pure ability. He was basically a 4.5 year starter (only half season in the Pac12 in 2020) due to Covid rules.
Each situation is going to be different. For JJ McCarthy, major changes in the coaching staff after Harbaugh left, so his year in 2024 wasn't going to be as good as 2023. Maye could have returned to the same HC and OC at UNC.

I doubt it. If you know you're going to be a top ten pick, you almost have to go to the NFL. Look at Trey Lance. Coming out too early probably tanked his NFL career, but it also guaranteed him generational wealth all from one contract ($34 million).

If you stay in school another year you face two serious risks: injury or having a bad season to see your stock fall. If either one drops you out of a top ten draft slot, you gambled and lost many millions. The NIL money isn't making up this loss.

Matt Barkley is classic example of someone who lost so much by staying

Matt Barkley was a trash QB - - hopelessly undersized, ZERO scrambling aniline a mediocre arm.

Being on a loaded USC team fooled novice fans and casual observers into think the was a great prospect.

But anyone who actually watched the games knew Barkley was terrible.

Pretty sure Barkley would have been picked apart during the draft evaluation process.

Risk and reward. Teams are much more willing due to the lower cash investment in a QB via the draft that if you don’t flash something in the first 2 and a half years teams will make up their minds and be ready to move off you.

Well Williams with his best game of career thus far

20/29
304 yds
2 TD's

5 Rushes
34 yds

Would have had a rushing TD if idiot OL hadn't clipped a guy unnecessarily

Barkley was going to be a top pick

You can claim all you want about how flawed he was, etc but he was going to be at worst a top 5 pick in draft if he came out with most expecting he was going to be #1

There was no scenario in which Barkley falls dramatically at that draft if he came out

He lost alot of $ not coming out and that is not something that can be disputed

I do recall being surprised he didn’t declare for 2012. Luck and RG3 went top 2 that draft with Tanny going 8th. RB Richardson went 3 and Cleveland later took Weeden in the 20’s, with Khalil OT going to Minny at 4.

Don’t even recall his reasons for going back to USC.

Daniels is incredible. I mentioned it in the other thread too but he might throw the prettiest deep ball since prime Russ. Not best per say but just the prettiest with that arc and landing softly in the receiver's hands in stride. It's a beauty.

I only saw highlights of Caleb but it appears he had a great day as well. Some impressive throws on those highlights and the boxscore looks good.

Too bad when they play each other in week 9 that it’s not in prime time. As things stand now both teams could easily be holding playoff spots when the game is played too.

Caleb Williams week 6

23/29
226 yds
4 TD's
1 INT

4 Rushes for 56 yds

Outside of the pick he was great. That pick was horrendous though and needs to never happen again

Rough start but no path is linear. Showing great progress for a few weeks now. Can live with the mistakes, but i feel good about him putting it together.

Maye looked pretty good.

This QB class might really be something.

Barkley came back for his senior year because he felt like he still had unfinished business at USC. We went 10-2 and finished the season on a high note with a 50-0 win against UCLA, but couldn't qualify to win the Pac-12 and go to a bowl game because of sanctions. He was a die-hard USC fan since childhood and felt he could bring us back to our glory years during his senior year when we could play in a bowl again.

He played well enough his senior year and still had Robert Woods and Marqise Lee as his receivers, but I think Lane Kiffin stifled Barkley's season with curious playcalling. I still have nightmares of Kiffin and his bubble screens.

Had to look up some of Barkley's stats, but it's interesting to know that he's been on the roster (practice squad included) for 11 different NFL teams in 11 years since being drafted.

Daniels continues to look really good despite the loss yesterday. Thought he had a really strong game.

Another really impressive performance by Caleb as well. It was only a matter of time before he figured it out and that might be what we're seeing now but at the same time, I also want to wait a bit before going too crazy. These last three weeks where he has looked good have been against literally the three worst defenses in the league by Def DVOA (Jags 32nd, Rams 30th, and Panthers 31st). You can only play whose on your schedule and the fact that a rookie is performing against even bad defenses is still a good sign.

Didn't see Maye outside of highlights but that first TD pass was nice. That's a play Jacoby can't make.

Nix looked brutal once again for the entire first half. It wasn't negative yardage bad but it wasn't a whole lot better than that. I thought his pass to Sutton was a good one. Of course Sutton made what might be the catch of the year so far but Nix also put it where he'd have a chance and it was good deep shot. I still take his overall numbers with a grain of salt though as majority of the yardage came when it was basically garbage time. Not seeing it at all with him when it comes to being a franchise QB or even a long time competent starter.

Nix is more game manager than a guy who can win with limited weapons. Denver just does not have the personnel.

All one can say is that Williams was massive disappointment

Sure, coaching and OL were issues, but Williams did not look good most of year. He is dreadful passing ball deep a supposed strength and often missed open WR's by a mile even when having clean pocket/time

He flashed at times but needs to take major leap next year. If not, then it will be time to wonder if Bears again whiffed at draft

Daniels and Nix were far superior
