Agreed. Although I'd like a bit more of a mix between home run swing and a nice hit for a single RBI.
Swing with Geekie and then grab Chesley for instance.
Grab Leonard or Dvorsky and swing with But (grant it I understand that having him and Simachev helps the likelihood of getting them over).
I think the sheer amount of homerun swings has perturbed me a bit. It's kind of the opposite of Chayka, where he made reaches for what seemed like very underwhelming and safe players that checked off his fancy metrics. BA seems to reach for very high ceilings that check off his metrics of character and size.

All that said, I've been impressed with the risks he has taken and don't need to spend nearly as much time justifying them as I did the Chayka reaches lol. For instance I'm much happier with But than Wood. I'm also happy with Simashev over Reinbacher (check out my thesis of a post from last night).

But yeah my preferred method would be one big swing flowed by a nice safe pick because we have so much draft darts

I don't think we talk about Moser enough around here. It was brilliant to take an overager whose stock rose so much after only having one draft pick in 2020. Let alone an overager who excelled so much. It's outlandish he stepped in right away and solidified himself in a top four spit an never looked back.

Also his mom is a delight and his grandfather is so damn proud of him (met both at the NJD game back in Feb).
Agree 100% about Moser. That said, there's your single. If you can hit on those with consistency elsewhere, maybe you can shoot for the moon early? At LD alone Moser, Szuber, Duda, and Kolyachonok all seem like they have a good shot at being really solid bottom 4 D. With potential on some to be even better. If Moser is an indicator of what they can find later in the draft, it makes all these swings a bit more palatable.

Another winger I like who’s currently more of a mid-1st ranking is Beckett Sennecke. He’s an OHLer but maybe this is the year BA finally goes back to his home province for a pick. Haha.

Anyway, I watched a handful of Generals games this season to get looks at Calum Ritchie. I liked Ritchie more than most and ranked him 16th on my list. I’m a big fan. But Beckett Sennecke often stole the show. He’s a much more exciting, flashy prospect than Ritchie. He’s got good size and I’d a dual threat with excellent skating from the wing.

I really hope we are targeting C & RD in ‘24 but Sennecke and Chernyshov are interesting wingers I thought I’d at least mention.

And then when they get tired...

Bantle - Castagna - Matikka
Morden - Kesselring

If we're only icing big dudes then the quality drops off quickly.
7 more picks in the 1st 3 rounds like we had this year. That’s before the deadline sell off… BA may not be chasing top 5 picks anymore but he’s not finished building yet! Plenty of time left to see how everything shakes out.

I don’t think we pick above 8 next year. Our puck possession last season was abysmal. With Guenther , Kerfoot, Zucker and maybe Dumba our puck possession time will be a lot better, impacting both gfa and gaa. I’m guessing that we pick in the 10-13 range

Nothing melts my heart like that level of puck hounding.
(the thing is, as time goes by you'll start doing that sort of thing in beer league, and people will notice you. not at that level, obviously, but that doesn't matter. more will than skill.)

Important tournament and Canada is loaded. Dickinson, Catton, Elick, and Mews among the big names representing.

At some point we have to draft from the OHL right? If we’re outside the top ten, I hope we’re looking at Nathan Villeneuve. He really impressed me a lot last season for Sudbury. I like him a lot more than Musty. Kid is a throw back player. Plays the game very hard despite average (not small) size. Was a former 3rd overall OHL selection so there’s skill there. The Wolves weren’t a great team and lacked depth. He didn’t get premium minutes. But his motor is excellent, he hits to to hurt, willing to fight, and has a lot of upside as a good two-way center. I get Mike Richards vibes for sure.

And one off his face a la Garland:

It does not look like it rt, but he should play a big role with the Wolves this year. You like big and skilled? Cayden Lindstrom is one to watch, playing at the upcoming Hlinka too.

Random guy but a list of interesting names

He’s a center too. Takes a lot of draws and wins the majority. Interesting indeed.

Teams that could/should be worse than us…

1. Chicago
2. San Jose
3. Philadelphia
4. Washington
5. Vancouver
6. Anaheim(?????)

Maybe everything falls sort in an unexpected way for Calgary or Winnipeg or Nashville but I doubt it.

I feel like we’re heading into the lottery with the 6th-9th best odds.

Is this what Tippett thought of, when he continually played David Moss…

Still holding out hope for a good season and a lottery win. Would be sweet to get one at the tail end of the rebuild.

You mean the lumbering, plodding, useless Moss was the one being victimized and stripped of the puck for goals against by talented, high motor players right?

100% - it would feel so “right” to finally win when we aren’t trying. Kind of like a “reward” for not tanking?

Washington and Vancouver are the only teams that make me pause.

Washington could be interesting depending on what Kuznetsov nets them in a trade. Kuemper will probably bounce back and a full year of Carlson will help them immensely.

I don't see Demko being as bad as he was last year. That alone should provide some added points compared to last year for the Canucks.

Agreed. If Pacioretty comes back some what healthy WSH should have a solid top 9. They have a full season of Carlsson and Sandin in the backend too, even though they lost Orlov. They probably aren't playoff good but probably not worse than last season.

I actually think VAN could push for a playoff spot. Would like to see them make one more.move on the blueline but to me last year was a year everything that could have gone wrong did.

CGY has a chance to be really bad if nobody wants to be there anymore. And although CBJ has improved their blueline they haven't in net. I feel like we could be neck and neck with them.

Clearly worse than us
CHI, SJ, PHI

Right around our level
CBJ, ANA, MTL, WPG

Slightly better
VAN, WSH, DET, CGY, SEA

At least there was lots of… try.

Yeah after a couple of decades of wanting to win one. Would only be fitting for it happen with the smallest odds possible and when least expecting it.

What no HABs?
From what you predicted last year at about this time and how we ended up, I can only conclude that we'll make the playoffs this season! We'll be buyers at the deadline and when the Leafs falter and dump Matthews on us ... gotta believe!

Don't wake me up yet, still got some time to go before camp.

I agree...Simashev and But better become very good players...otherwise our resurgence isn't going to be as good as we need it to be. Simashev has to become a top pair guy and But has to be 50pt or better 2-way power forward.
Reminds me of my comments way back when about how Yotes needed at least one of Strome or Dvorak to hit as a 1C for the rebuild to have a chance at success. Of course neither did and they pulled the plug on the rebuild way before knowing that and well here we are...rebuilding again.

We have no choice but to trust this group for now…

Bill Armstrong - Chief of scouting for STL 2010-2020 (Stanley Cup 2019)

Darryl Plandowski - Chief of scouting for TBL 2008-2020 (Stanley Cups 2020 & 2021)

Alan Hepple - Chief of scouting for COL 2009-2021 (Stanley Cup 2022)

Not to mention John Ferguson Jr who once ran a draft for Toronto where every single pick he made that year played in the NHL.

Plus Larry Pleau. And Teil Fowler who got us Moser and Vejmelka.

And also we assembled a development staff that’s equally well-regarded. And also seen as unprecedented in the history of this sad sack franchise.

They’re actually doing the scouting and development staff right for once. For the first time. And it coincides with having the most draft picks of any team ever.

It’s a good plan. No telling if it will work. It might fail. But it’s a good plan. No choice but to hope for the best.

Oh yeah of course, there's a lot of reasons to be hopeful this turn around is going to work. My comment about Strome and Dvorak is more a reminder that no one, not even Cooley, is proven yet much less Geekie, Simashev, But, etc. It's still entirely possible the last 3 drafts have not landed the Yotes a single first line player or top 2 D player. Reeeeeealy hoping that's not the case and I'm optimistic that's not the case but it is entirely possible. We just won't know until those players are actually in the NHL and that's a ways off still. Basically you don't have a pipeline until there's actual talent showing up in the NHL, Macelli and Moser a good start but I know I'll feel better when Guenther or Cooley make the team and live up to their draft position.

BTW...nice breakdown of the staff.
