To be honest with you, I've never watched a single Celebrini highlight until about 4:15PM today. Why would I ever watch a future Blackhawk's highlights right? So I really could not give you a scouting report on him until today lol

We are kind of in the same boat. I watched him in 2 games against BU, but my focus was on Mr. Secondary (who fittingly will be our #2 prospect after June 28).

Have watched very few highlights as scouting him or trying to get an impression of him was not important to me, given that he was by everyone’s opinion the clear cut Nr.1…

Macklin is really, really good. Guaranteed high-end 1C. He probably won’t be a 100 point guy, but he’ll be a 90 point Selke defense center in his prime.

I also didn’t follow him specifically because I didn’t want to face the disappointment of not getting him, but yeah. Really, really good. Completely different level of prospect than Smith, who is also really good.

Now that he's going to be a Shark, we can really be honest with ourselves.

Smith had a great year and was a Hobey Baker finalist... on a ridiculously stacked team. He was a PP killer, but took some time to get into the swing of actually driving play at 5v5, and was criticized for drifting and even for being a passenger on his line - debatable, but there was a debate. He's got an elite skillset and he's a great top prospect.

Celebrini did better in counting stats and 5v5 two-way play on a far less stacked BU team, was the clear team driver not just line driver, and rightfully (sorry Cutter) won the HB... at 15 months younger.

Celebrini is absolutely a tier above Smith even if Smith is an incredible prospect. Hopefully Smith, Musty, other prospects, and all the current roster players are stoked right now.

Well-said.

I also am just happy that this puts less pressure on Smith to be a true 1C. Love the kid a ton, but he’s not a guarantee the way Macklin is. Macklin as a 90 point shutdown center and Smith as a 70 point soft-minutes center is a contending recipe we can work with.

I think he'll be an 100 point guy with the way scoring has been up.

He's going to be better than Elias Pettersson, who put up 100. And I think he can be a better player than JT Miller who also hit 100.

My guess is he hits 110~ a couple times.

I also avoided too much Celebrini tape because, there was just no way we got him, well, lol

But in what I have seen he's a methodical, almost slow-paced but more controlled-paced, two way center who can drive play through the neutral zone with the puck on his stick and has a surprisingly accurate shot

He feels like a much higher-end version of Nico Hischier, one who might give you 40 goals instead of 30 at his peak, so not a McDavid or Bedard level of prospect, but sign me up to have that player on my team any day of the week

Smith is a lot cuter though

I watched a bit of him but now that I'm binging the tape again, I wouldn't say he's control-paced. I think he accelerates very well on the rush, has serious wheels, but then in the zone he controls space and time a bit like Smith with deception and creativity but a bit more aggressively so. He's got a high-end shot (not Bedard level of course but easily Smith level or better). And he's very responsible defensively.

I think what I like most about him is he's almost always in the right place for the offensive system or for creative play. He either digs the puck out himself, or he supports play to create turnovers. But he's also backchecking and creates turnovers in his own end. The tape shows a really, really smart player with a high motor.

I really think he's an excellent franchise centerpiece. It's way too early to declare, but he has a lot of the same style as MacKinnon. If he's 90% of Mac, we'll be happy for a very long time.

Smith is a lot cuter though
I did a google search for "Will Smith nhl combine" to try to see his results, and all I got were thirsty tribute vids, so yes.

I’m aware. Just hope that we can get 1 of those two in the next 2 drafts. Although, heard others mentioning that Macklin doesn’t count toward the 2 in 5 years.
Mackdaddy doesn't count. If the Sharks are the presumptive #1 team next season and the season after, and win those lotteries, they still get those 1OA guys.

The 2024 NHL Draft Lottery marked the third year for the implementation of a limit on how many times a team can win a lottery draw. No single team can advance in the draft order by reason of winning a Lottery Draw more than two times in any five-year period. This limitation will not affect a club’s ability to retain its presumptive draft position in any Draft Lottery, nor would it preclude the possibility of the club moving down in draft order to the extent other clubs advance by reason of winning the Lottery Draws.

Now that we have the center position locked in, I’m more interested in trying to trade up from 14 to snag a D. Having Celebrini accelerates this rebuild quite a bit and getting a top D prospect this year means another step closer to contention.
Trading up is never cheap but at 14 they are very close to Carter Yakemchuk who is big, scored 30g in the WHL and is very physical. Not supposed to go top 10 but the upside is huge.

Yeah, I went and checked and right from the NHL website:

This limitation will not affect a club’s ability to retain its presumptive draft position in any Draft Lottery, nor would it preclude the possibility of the club moving down in draft order to the extent other clubs advance by reason of winning the Lottery Draws. For purposes of clarity, the limitation would attach to the team, not the specific pick. An example is outlined here.

So yeah, winning this lottery isn't a strike against the Sharks. They could still pick 1st for the next couple of years, and even beyond that if they were to pick 1st as the worst team in the league. The restriction is simply on moving up via the lottery.

I see the MacKinnon comp thrown out there and, again, VERY limited viewings, but I don't see it

He's got a nice speed burst he uses for a deceptive change of direction to create space but he isn't really a burner out there either

I see him in the Toews/Hischier archetype more than anything, legitimately potent offensively with high end skill, but with much more of a focus on puck control and defense first

HF Sharks is now arguing over who is the cuter prospect between Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith

We are so f***ing back

P.S. Mack is still 17 years old, maybe chill for a bit

I feel like if this interpretation is true, then the rule is basically only for the most extreme situations. Say a team finished 2nd-worst for four seasons in a row after winning the draft, then there's a, what, 20-25% chance of them winning two lotteries over the next four years and this rule being enforced?

I wonder how season ticket renewals are doing now
You need to have STH in the first place to renew.

Historical #17 jerseys for the Sharks
One day it'll be Mack Celebrini 2024-2044...
