What makes you think yakemchuk is defensively sound?

Chychrun got Laughton +12?

Probably because in the NHL 29 is low percentage pick.
You do NOT want Yakemchuk if you want a defensively sound guy.

He is worse than Parekh. Why do I see so many people with the belief Yakemchuk is some great defender?

Senators will Target Levshunov first, if he’s gone they’ll move onto Iginla. They may also hold Parekh to a high standard.

With their second first rounder, they’ll go for a RHD 100%, one of Emery, Badinka, Danford, Jiricek, or Elick.
Yeah maybe not now. But with the size I was thinking more potential on the d side with time . Could be wrong. I haven’t studied enough yet admittedly.

Me neither. Right now they can both get by. Who knows what they do defensively at the next level

Yakemchuk is almost 1 year older than Dickinson.

Seems pretty significant. Does that change anything for you guys?

I'm leaning towards picking one of Levshunov, Eiserman, Iginla, Catton at 7th overall and going for Cole Hutson, Mews or Emery with the BOS 1st rounder.

Another Mock hits the streets fwiw.

The D

2. Levshunov ANA
6. Parekh UTAH
7. Dickinson OTT
8. Buium SEA
9. Silayev CAL
12 Yakemchuk PHI
14 Jiricek SJ
23 Emery TML
24 Elick ANA
25 Kiviharju COL

She has Basha going 26 to the Sens... Emery and Elick are off the board... but there remain a few RD on the board that could be of interest .. and I would be tempted to take one here over a forward.. but a couple available here I have interest in Parascak who she has labelled a D.. and Beaudoin.. Connelly is also available on her list which could be a very high reward pick there. I have not looked into Basha at all but he is rated in that zone.

I would probably try and use another pick to move that Boston pick up a bit

If you mean this year's other pick(s).. I am not sure a 4th in this draft would move the needle very much even one position unless they can find the right partner

This, on Parekh, is news to me:

"Parekh is more physically involved than some give him credit, and his physical play is arguably his most projectable attribute. He doesn't back away from contact, and he can get in trouble because he can sometimes be too physically involved. His play can be erratic, as is often the case with offensively elite blueliners, but teams are high on his skating, instincts and raw tools."

That sounds more like Yakemchuk.

Probably misread the excel sheets

In all seriousness I have no clue how she scouts, for all I know she could be right

No it doesnt, as he is still growing into his body. He is likely on a longer development curve, there needs to be context about each players physical maturity thats not a linear variable.

I personally dont want either in the 7 spot. But id be pretty disappointed if in the event the choice is between both of them that they pick Dickinson. Yakemchuk has more upside.

I would be very disappointed if they went Dickinson over Buium.

I saw the Elite Prospects mock they have Ottawa taking Catton haha. 0 research done in that instance. Last type of player this organization should be looking at.

  • I dug this up. I wanted to revisit the summer of 2020 before the draft. I am embarrassed by most of my picks. Goes to show how hard it is. My comments on each player are what I wrote at the time. I did nab Neighbours and Devon Levi.

I did a draftism just now... let me know how I did:

#3 Stutzle C (Nothing needs to be said)

#5 Raymond LW/RW (Nothing needs to be said)

#18 Noel Gunler LW/RW (could've had Jarvis but didn't want another small forward - Gunler is big with a killer shot)

#33 Wallinder LD (Schneider and Guhle were both gone in the teens and Poirier went 24th - Wallinder is big and loves to rush the puck - defense needs work).

#49 Helge Grans RD (Big Swedish d-man - smart but lacks physicality)

#50 Makhamadullin LD (Great skating puck moving d-man that might think he is too cool for school)

#53 Jake Neighbours LW (Gritty forward - limited offense - Lazar?)

#64 Jaromir Pytlik C (Big power forward - battles hard)

#79 Dylan Peterson C (Physical power center - untapped offense)

#95 Brandon Coe RW (I wanted Nico Daws but he went right before this pick - Coe is a power forward that skates well)

#152 Ethan Cardwell C (Grinding forward - limited offense)

#158 Blake Biondi C (U.S. high school forward absolutely killed all competition this year)

#185 Devon Levi G (Smallish Carleton Place goalie - good stats).

Rachel Doerrie - ESPN - April 2nd: "One of the oldest players in the draft class, Yakemchuk has a highlight reel that's a mile long featuring goals and big hits, but it comes with a lot of risk. Yakemchuk is not only one of the highest-scoring defensemen in the draft, but he's also one of the most penalized."

120 PIM in 66 games. He'll fit right into our team with the penalties he takes (just hope he draws them like most of our team can)

Even if he turns into EK part 2 I want a more defensively sound guy. Dickinson or Yakemchuk would be just fine. Or buium if he’s there for some reason.

As someone who goes to Hitmen games I can say that Yakemchuk has tons of work to do on his defensive game. Of all the D at the top of this draft he is possibly the most suspect on D, including Parekh.

That's not to say he's not worth picking but if you're looking for surefire solid D he is near the bottom of the list.

Being big ≠ good defense

Got it. Good to know but If that’s the case then we shouldn’t even consider yakemchuk. So…I’ll have to watch a lot more. Haven’t got to it yet.

All these guys are young though. I think if you go looking fro a guy who is already good defensively then you might pass up on some serious offensive skill. ANd by the time these players reach their second contract they might have learned how to play defense just about as well as the "safe" guy.

Hopefully our scouts can project who's going to be a player that grows into something special. It ain't easy with 17-18 year olds.

Even young players typically don’t go from defensive liability to defensively dependable.
We need defensive specialists as a foundation. Offensive creativity on top of that is gravy and Could be a decisive factor between the defensive specialists.

So I’d say if not defensively very sound then ignore. If defensively sound then consider and evaluate further.

Only players I'd call defensively sound in the top 15-ish, IMO are:

Buium
Dickinson
Helenius
Brandsegg-Nygard
Celebrini (maybe)
Silayev

I haven't watched all these guys for full games but according to reports that would be it.

Guys I'd call defensive specialists would only potentially include Silayev, Helenius and Buium.

No way am I passing on some of these other players because they don't play great D at age 18.

Buium is not a defensive specialist. He is 2 way. Stronger Offensively .. he is smaller and will have to get stronger . His above average skating and IQ help him be good positionally on defense. Like Sanderson in that way but I don't think he's as good on the D side. I will say that he is better defensively than at least half the top 6 D prospects but that is more about their current stage.
One of the reasons I like Silayev is for his shut down potential.. Not too many D his age play a big role in the KHL. Big Mobile, Strong defensively and Physical. If it was up to me and he was there , he wouldn't be there anymore.

Is he really smaller relatively speaking? I'd seen him listed at 6'2 183 which seems typical for a draft pick.,

I did notice his big brother Shai playing on the same team is 220 so the genetics seem to be there...

He’s going to come in around 6.075 190 at the combine if I were to guess. Not small by any means, as long as I’m not way off the mark.

Not small, but 3 of the other D are monster sized guys, 4 depending on how you view Yakemchuk with regards to the 7th.

By defensive specialist I mean he can be used in a shutdown role. He was on the ice for 0 goals against for the duration of the NCAA tournament (I believe 8 games). He's a good offensive player so to call him a defensive specialist is not totally accurate but he excels at defense.

Shai signed with the Wings. I wonder what they'd give up to re-unite the brothers?
