Even with a decentralized draft going forward, we can count on 2 things occurring every year. NHL GMs on potential move away from centralized draft: 'It's gonna be different' | TSN:

1) ESPN will go to commercial when our first round pick comes up
2) CANES will trade down

btw: I wonder if a decentralized draft will make it harder for agents to work the system for their clients since they all won't be in one spot.

They walked into yesterday with two first round picks and walked out with one Jett Luchanko after Biuim fell into their laps. They did pick up a third by trading back, but they probably could have traded back more, gotten a better asset in return, and still picked him up ~20ish.

Then on top of that Briere traded the 2025 3rd round pick from Minnesota and their own 2024 3rd round pick to move up 18 spots and drafted QMJHL defender Spencer Gill at 59th overall.
