The players from 3-12ish are all pretty interchangeable for me.

If I’m moving picks and solid prospects I’d rather move up from Van’s pick and try to snag a Connelly in the early 20s
I think there's a good possibility we could trade Markstrom to Detroit and get their 15th
It would likely involve taking back an overpriced player and retention though.
But imagine having #9, #15, & another late 1st?

Honestly, I go to New Jersey.
I go to New Jersey and I paint the picture of 'you had essentially three PPG players on your team. You had a guy who would of had almost 100 points if he played the full season. You have one of the most dynamic young defence corps in the entire NHL. The team was a top ten shot generating club in the league, a team that statistically should have outscored their opponents every night, yet you couldn't get a goalie to give you a 900 save percentage, or make a big save. You had a bottom 5 save percentage in the entire league this year.'

I know the talks broke down between them, but honestly, Markstrom + 29 or w/e the Van pick ends up being for pick 10 isn't too far off in my humble opinion. Markstrom was the only reason this team was remotely looking competitive for portions of the year this year. Even with a depleted defense, and nothing to play for for the last 1/4 of the season he still managed a a better GAA and SV% than any of the Devils goalies that played 10 or more games.

Read the thread on the trade proposal boards. NJ fans seem to think it's way off.

I just posted there.
Fans just get too excited around the draft time. Every year as we get closer we start believing that everyone in the top 12-15 of a draft is going to change a franchise.

Most people can't get past the idea that GMs work for a living. It's not make belief for them. IF they don't produce, they get fired and lose out on a jobs that people would kill for. I mean, in 2020 Calgary moved down 6 spots at the draft for a couple third rounders lol. You'd imagine a ~20 point swing would be worth a star goalie and potentially offset picks.

You cannot say with that certainty, but I really hope he is.

He isn't ranked high enough to think we need to move up to 5 in order to draft him. The likelihood of him being there at 9 is way too high to justify moving up for him. If his last name wasn't Iginla we wouldn't even care if he was still there.

I think we could easily get the Avs 1st for Markstrom. We could package those two late firsts and move up

Here's my thoughts on this.

I agree that if he wasn't named Iginla we wouldn't care.

But I think his name matters two fold.

1. We are moving towards a new building. We need excitement in the city and Jarome working for the Flames and drafting his kid would absolutely be a feel good thing for the city.

2. One of the biggest issues with young hockey players is - will they be professional with their training and mindset to make the leap. Will they overcome hardships and friction when life is thrown at them. Being an Iginla means Jarome is your dad. He's a good role model and dare I say better than many young men may receive. That has real world impacts on development and reaching your upside. So in this sense, yes his name being Tij Iginla does make a difference. If his name was Nathan Stapler I too would take him 5-10 slots lower.

If the rumours from the insiderrrrrrs from CP were even remotely close to true, get that deal back on the table (was a 1st and a pretty good young player IIRC) and add the Canucks 1st to make up the difference in draft position.

Threefold: having players want to play here when they get into their mid-20s is an unfortunate but legit concern.

Iginla is much more likely to be a guy who wants to stick around here imo.

I think this fear will subside with new facilities in place for the team. It will also help the organization take that next step in competing when they decide it is time to transition out of the rebuild. It's somewhat of a minor miracle that they have been able to draft and develop at the rate they have with the current systems in place. Not to mention the 2019, 2022 division titles

Yes that's true. Good point.

I was going to say we'll sell lots of Jersey's but perhaps a lot of people will just wear their #12 Iginla Jersey's or renumber their current Jersey's

Whereas if they draft Catton people will have to buy a new jersey

Hate to say it but need some size and snarl. Playoffs continue to be a bloodbath. Thinking Iginla will be gone by 9 so Yakemchuk might be the guy to build the next great Flames defence around.

Why do you hate to say it? I say it every year, and every year fans forget how physical playoffs are.
I'll always give up a bit of skill for more snarl. One of the biggest things I look for though is compete level, and as long as a smaller offensive player has that then I'm good. Which is why I'm not big on Eiserman.
It's Yak's skating that has some questions, but I'd be happy with Yak @ 9th. I think he could slide a bit though and if we could grab another 10-15th pick we could get him with that pick.

They certainly have the tools to make some creative moves at the draft and be among the more active teams.

I'd love to see them trade an aging player with value and the 29th pick to get higher up in the first. Seems like a win win.

Also - 29 and 41 could help move up, maybe into the 17-19 range. Maybe Vegas who doesn't have a 2nd 3rd 4th or 5th round pick would like to add one.

I love this chart and figured I'd share it here. Its a theory on the value of draft picks.

With the thought that Leshunov, Demidov and Celibrini are probably off the board by nine, I think my final wish list is Catton, Iggy, Buium or Parekh in no particular order. Only one I'm whelmed/not crazy about is Helenius. Most of the other names thrown around in the top 10 I'd be pretty happy with overall.

Yakemchuk at 9 would be disappointing. Essentially, you’re taking the 6th best D at 9 just because you like his size.

That's a matter of opinion. I've seen plenty of scouting reports/reviews that are incredibly high on his upside. There's absolutely a conversation to be had about his floor, or likelihood of reaching that ceiling, but saying his only positive attribute is size isn't entirely fair.

That’s not what I’m saying, though. I’m saying in comparison to the other options, the biggest reason to like him over them would be his size. Not once have I said that was his only positive attribute.

To me, he’s clearly is a tier or two lower than all of Buium, Levshunov, Silayev, and Dickinson. There’s probably a debate about him against Parekh, though - so maybe 5/6 best is more fair.

I’m not into passing on guys with overall superior tools than Yakemchuk that high because his size is better. If you want to draft for size, take Emery in the 2nd.

Of course it’s a matter of opinion, and mine is that I’d be disappointed considering he’s probably around 12-14 on my rankings.

He's not in my short list of preferences for sure. I guess I just read too much into your post. Frankly all the D rankings are all over the place, so I guess I took the 6th best D and size things too literally.

Let's not ignore the fact that outside of being a 6'3" RD, Yakemchuk also had 30 goals, possesses elite hands, and is the most physical among these defenders as well.

He very much should be in the conversation at #9. I wouldn't be upset with it. The Hitmen have been a largely mediocre to below average team during his time there. I don't love the fact that he's a September 2005, which pushes him down my list slightly.

We need a big physical D or a player who can turn into a top 6 C. I could see Yakemchuk turning into a Brent Burns or Dougie Hamilton type. His offfensive tools are scary good, he skates well and he’s physical. It’s rare to see a combo like that for a 6’3 D. He’s got learning to do on the D zone but Huska can teach him those things.

I like 8 other players in this draft more but I’d be happy with him as our pick if they are gone.

Eiserman and Parekh are good players but I think they are redundant to some level based on our organization’s depth.

I think Silayev and Levshunov are in a slight tier above the other four guys. After that it’s a toss up but of those four I see Parekh and Yakemchuk with best chance to end up being the best dman in the draft. I’d be happy with any of the five not named Buuim. Why you ask? Him being USA is only reason for me. Still feeling that burn from Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Hanifin. Too soon for me to go down that road with a top 10 pick.

I feel you. Hoping that Conroy at the helm might help with that, but yea.

Honestly I think that a new arena will help with retaining American talent. Maybe I'm delusional but I think it factored into Gaudreau and Tkachuk's departures.
