While I love your proposed d corps, the thought that a soon to be 36 year old Backlund and/or 33 year old Coleman have that kind of value to any GM, let alone for Silayev, is exactly that: a dream. It would take Razzy and a 1st just to get Fitzgerald to answer the phone lol

Highly unlikely. His offensive game was never in question. He looked absolutely lost out there without the puck against NHL players in the preseason. Conroy/Huska will not give him 1 game of NHL time if he cant look even remotely serviceable in his own zone. I still convinced that hes 2.5 years away. 1 more CHL year, 1 full year of AHL and a partial second year in the AHL. Call it the Zary curve if you want.

Zero chance he plays anywhere but the CHL. He cannot go to the NCAA, AHL or Europe due to signing an NHL contract and transfer agreements.

I fully believe he's going to make the roster.
Reminder Quinn Hughes made Chris Tanev look pedestrian as a defender in his rookie year as his partner how bad he was at the other side of the rink. Chris Tanev made Oliver Kylington look like a real top 4 option.

You stick him on a pair with someone who can defend their end of the ice, give him a lot of OZ starts, kid-glove him. PP time. He'll produce.

He looked completely lost in preseason games this year. His offensive talent is not the question. The question is can he look remotely serviceable against NHL forwards. You dont learn how to play defense in the NHL. Thats why I dont see him making the jump next year or even the year after. Him getting burned game in and game out will shatter any confidence he has.

The problem, stagnation is just as bad for development. Parekh has clearly outgrown the OHL; keeping him down there really wouldn't do anything for his game. Can't play in the AHL, don't believe he can sign in Europe; so all that's left is the NHL.

If Parekh has an even a passable camp, I expect the Flames will keep him on the roster and bring him along slowly. The idea being that even just being around NHL players, in practices, and getting the odd game will help more than getting bored and developing bad habits in the OHL.

He's got far too much skill for them to at least not give it a shot. Between Weegar and Bahl we have 2 very strong defensive dmen who can cove for him. But as we've seen around the league plenty of other young dmen have succeeded when put into the nhl in the last 5-6 years

Just have to be careful about mindset too, although with his parents, I'm sure they'll be mindful of making sure he has the right mentality for the short term and long term.

The reason being is another dman, Hamilton. He was sheltered by his partner, but expected to round out his weaknesses. Instead, a complaint was that he kinda just continued on kept expecting his partner would basically do it for him vs he work on certain criticisms of his style of game.

That's a major difference to someone like Makar who ensures that he always tries to make up for any mistakes and weaknesses in his game.

If Parekh ends up closer to Makar, home run. If he ends up closer to Hamilton, still great, but disappointing.

He's the best goal scoring defensemen of all time at the OHL level. I don't think people recognize that.

Doug Wilson is the closest comparable (both had/have 80 goals over 3 seasons), but Wilson's came during his 17-19 year old seasons, and that was 30 years ago to boot. Parehk also has 17 games to add to that total.

At least at that level - he's absolutely a generational offensive talent.

Way i see it is we should definitely be rolling out Parekh with Weegar next year. Keep Bahl and Andersson together. And Pachal with whoever else for bottom pair.

This is probably the best course of action, to leave the spot open with Weegs for Zayne, and see if Brzu can play well enough to make Razzy expendable to move at the deadline. Solo with Patches.

Expecting anything more than bottom pair for Brzustewicz next year and even the year after that would be setting the bar way too high in my opinion. Look at Andersson’s development path for a good comp (super smart player with mediocre foot speed). AHL in his D+2/3. Then broke into a bottom pair role his 1st year in the NHL. Heavily babysat in the top 4 in his age 23 season. If Brzustewicz makes the NHL at any point next season, passable 3rd pair minutes would be an accomplishment in itself.

Honestly we can get the typical 1st, prospect we like and a middling asset for him, but I’m more and more liking the idea of a core of Andersson, Weegar, Bahl, Parekh and Brzu for the next 8 years. Could be back to having an elite defense core with a star goalie, and when Andersson and Weegar step back our young guys should be ready to take over. People are terrified of being middling forever, so I don’t see how trading Andersson for 2-3 pieces who will most likely not equal his value helps further us more than having top of the league defense.

Shows just how hard the jump is from CHL to the AHL, NHL is another massive step up.

Personally I think Ras has always been a bit overrated. Love the guy. He’s a solid 2nd pair D. But he’s not the guy I would sign long term. I think his play has fallen off quite a bit already this year.

Sign Kevin Bahl and another vet D in the offseason to a shorter deal. Provorov, Pionk, Gavrikov, Duomolin, Ceci. There should be guys available on short term deals that can be signed to avoid throwing the kids to the wolves. Plus I think Solo and Kuz are ready to play as 4/5/6 guys as well.
