In purgatory
These kind of 5th - 7th round picks seem like 'reward' picks for scouts to select, as opposed to an eye to development. Pretty much a waste. They did find Desharnais with a 7th and he took a long route to the Oilers.

Despite never hitting on non-1st round picks, Oilers scouts believe they are the smartest in the room. Why draft a fresh 18 year old when you can draft guys already passed over once or twice that put up <10 pts a year?

Its interesting Desharnais is absolutely the best example of it working out for the Oilers and all we really got out of that pick was about a 100 games of a 3rd pair d-man 7 years after being drafted and now he's a UFA.

Oh well. I guess for every 100 or so of these wasted picks one of em will turn into a Parayko right?

I mean it’s Hail Marys anyways at that round
I think the thing with a lot of the overrage picks the Oilers make is that they never actually seem to be actual hail marys. The upside on these guys very rarely seems like its high and best case scenario you end up with a bottom pair/bottom line guy years down the line who might get a cup of coffee in the NHL in their careers.

It's like being down 7 with one play to go in the 4th quarter and punting the ball away.

They have had some luck with later picks lately. Skinner, Mcleod, Desharnais, also Kesselring became a full time NHler. It is the failure of the top picks to develop that's been hurting the team: Jay-Poo, Broberg and Holloway (both getting better), Bourgault.
