Social media has turned intellectual/civil progression on it's ear to the point where we are regressing back to the knuckle dragging, superstitious, tribal primates that we had started to distance ourselves from. What has happened south of the border is also happening here as truth, civility, and the honest push towards collective altruism are being steamrolled by ideologies that belong in the past and have no place in the 21st century.

He's so nice that he's one of the 2400 people in Russia sanctioned by EU, US and Canada for the war in Ukraine. He's on the same list as Russian generals, politicians and some vocal propagandists.

It's one thing if people don't really see it as a big deal to visit Russia during these times. That's fine. Meeting with sanctioned individuals, is not fine.

The sanction list doesn’t mean a thing. Notice there was a 10m USD bounty on a certain head cutting terrorist’s head until two days ago (now he’s the leader of a sovereign country!).

What does Demidov have to do with the issue we are discussing here, which is that the Canadiens brass is meeting with a person sanctioned by multiple countries including Canada, and said meeting could actually be deemed illegal activity?

Speaking with someone is not sanctionable. Use your head. Sanctions are tangible restrictions and they’re clearly delineated.

I haven't taken issue with Demidov, or even visiting Russia to scout him (which is very ill-advised considering Russia has been known to basically abduct westerners and using them to bargain imprisoned Russians abroad). My issue is with meeting with Roman Rotenberg.

Hundreds of thousands of dual nationals freely move between the countries. Millions of tourists. It’s a bit lame to get hung up on a fake story as “Russia abducts people” which is clearly trumped up for propaganda purposes. Just as they do the same to us in their country. Just as we do to China and China does to us.

It’s more cool to rise above this noise. Hughes showed his dedication to Demidov and the Habs by going there and I think it means good things for our organization. If the Canadian federal government wants to cry about it, they can get bent.

Where does everyone see Demidov slotting in next season?

I'm assuming he's going to start on line 2 with Laine and whoever our 2C is. He'd be getting sheltered slightly and putting him with Laine should get Laine's 5 on 5 production to take off. I still think management should be after Malkin this offseason. Anything they can do to ease Demidov's transition to NA they should. Plus adding Malkin gives us a stop gap at 2C until Hage/Beck/2025 pick are ready to step up.

I am intellectually curious how the KHL is bypassing sanctions.

Notice that there are Western players in the KHL. They wouldn't be there if there was no way for them to bring their earnings home. Perhaps they deposit their money in Turkish, Indian, Chinese, or Kazakh bank accounts, and then transfer them back home.

The amount of slurs people like me see thrown at them over the past few years is even worse than when I was a teenager lol, and definitely the fault of some shenanigans going around by very smart people

Hughes taking the time to go there instead of just sending an underling is a sign of respect and trust. Who cares if the russians used the situation as a marketing ploy - they have the short stick of the whole situation anyway and are kinda being humiliated with their prized prospect wanting to leave for North America as soon as possible... if showing them respect and being interested in their hockey program (which is a quality one from everything I read) is all it costs to lube the whole relationship, then it's a very low cost overall, and Hughes is smart executive in paying it willingly.

Also, this goes beyond Demidov. Russia is a paria right now, but it shouldn't remain so eternally, and the habs establishing a trust relationship with a (the) KHL powerhouse like SKA could reap additional benefits in the future. People remember who stayed friends with them when they were at their lowest.
