He wasn’t on my radar but the EP draft guide had good things to say about him. Dad was on the mid 90s Sabres.
Great brain, great passer, good skater. Might turn into a top 9 scoring type.

The good thing is we can afford patience with this kid. 3-4 years in college, then the A. He might surprise us.
Reading his write up on the Hockey Writers, feels like a guy who can give you point production on the 3rd line while being a power play specialist. If he's more than that well then that's awesome. Kind of a modern day Jiri Hudler but with better skating of course.

I'm pretty pleased with this pick. Most of our 2nd round selections the past few years have been "meh" or "wtf?". Plus, the kid's heart and head are in the right place; he'll be a Bulldog and not a Jaundiced Gerbil, aka, Minnesota Gopher.

Edit: I am in lock-step with @Carmine Cirella , did this kid present a fake I.D. to become draft eligible?

Good pick and quite surprising actually but after reading his scouting report, has anyone checked is Max Plante actually Valtteri Filppula in disguise? He seems to be exactly the same player.

Some people think Plante is the best passer in the draft. Probably more Hudler than Fil.

Reading the write ups I get PA Parenteau vibes. In a good way.

Just note to all the Wings fans on here who don't watch much NCHC: Minnesota Duluth almost always over-relies on gritty veteran upperclassmen. It will be interesting to see how Plante, a skill passer who doesn't fit the normal UMD mold, will do for the Bulldogs. Will Scott Sandelin give him consistent big minutes right away?

Big fan of his personality, also profiles along the lines of what our prospect pool definitely needs more of.

Really, I don't see a lot of meh or WTF Here are our 2nd round picks since 2021

2023
Trey Augustine
Andrew Gibson
Brady Cleveland

2022
Dylan James
Dmitri Buchelnikov

2021
Shai Buium

There are only 2 players are suspect. James still has a good chance to make it a bottom 6 guy in the future and Cleveland well we'll see.

I guess it depends on how much excitement you want to generate for guys that may fall into a bottom six role. If any of them see NHL playing time it makes them a good pick, but of the lot of them I only see Augustine and Wallinder as having the potential to be impact players among our second rounders.

Hanas, Buium, Matrosimone, James and Neiderbach were uninspiring picks to me. I like the Buchelnikov pick because he brings a skillset we lack among our picks.

Tuomisto falls into the wtf category by virtue of draft position as does Brady Cleveland.

I need to clarify I haven't shit on these selections and presented myself as a draft expert like some people like to do. My only alternate take was drafting Scott Morrow instead of Buium. I'm coming from the standpoint that there's not many picks with a unique skillset or that may exceed their draft position, which we really need to happen.

I don't get Tuomisto as shit selection.

He was ranked as 3rd rounder (~45th to ~69th range), and they took him at the 2nd. And was putting very high points at U20 level, and also for Finland U18.

Cleveland was ranked at 4th-5th (90th - 142nd range) round and taken on the 2nd round.

Your response sums it up pretty well: he was a projected 3rd rounder taken early in the 2nd round of a very deep draft. If you swapped his and AlJo's selections I don't think anyone would have cared. There were still some higher quality players available where Tuo was picked.

I remember first time seeing Tuomisto after we just drafted him. My reaction was, OMG why would you take him , but he gets better, still don't expect him to play any games in NHL.

Johansson was ranked lower, and that draft has been very tough for defencemen.

Red Wings reached with all defencemen they got, Seider, Tuomisto, Johansson - and got the best defenceman from the draft.

Got my first look at Plante in Plymouth at the WJSS today. He is a superb passer, as advertised. He's pretty much scanning the ice as soon as he gets the puck on his stick. What I liked is he made smart passes and didn't force them. Today's game was a landslide win so I'm hoping to see how he does when the competition is a little better.

Augustine looked way more polished than any of the other goalies today. Dude was a boss.
