obviously kd would have taken sam dickinson
OK - so Demidov + Dickinson vs Lev + top 5 forward this year, again hypothetical that they could've swung a trade for one of the half dozen left after Lev, which is more desirable going foward? Lotto ticket at a top forward this year and Lev or Demidov and Dickinson (or someone else not Lev)

The attempt to get Demi showed KD to be weak, IMO.

It seems the Hawks gladly leaked their pick all over, it was assumed by the media to be Lev. Okay, fine. Then tell Anaheim, tell Columbus. Makes the ****ing moves you need to make to get it right on draft day. Don't wait until the last second, they could have thrown the kitchen sink at Anaheim or Columbus to begin with so they know where they stand before the draft. If they wanted Demidov that bad they already threw huge nuggets out to get him and likely could have added more to make it very lopsided.

Burke threw everything at the wall to land both Sedins, KD should have been able to pull it off given nothing screamed "can't miss generational" of the other picks taken at 3/4.

This team sucks. I don’t think it’s much of a lotto ticket that they get a top forward this year, especially after they unload a bunch of players at the deadline later in the season.

is the difference between Lev and the rest of the defenseman that were available after him even likely to be that big? There was no consensus among the group. Some team after CBJ likely would've made a deal to give up a top 10 pick for an unprotected first (plus) with very good relative chance at being number one overall pick in 25 unless you assumed KD could add a ton of talent to the roster in one offseason...Did Davidson and Co just irrationally fall in love with Lev relative to the other options at the position and mistakenly pass on Demidov because of it, we'll see I guess

Depends on who is scouting. Some thought Lev to be top tier, others didn't have him top 5. Time will tell. Point I was making was that we had a ton to offer and nothing this draft was really untouchable perhaps beyond the first overall.

demidov was likely the right pick to make at 2 if there's no deal to be made for picks 3-5. that's been the majority opinion on this forum since before the draft. there is still a possibility that levshunov justifies his draft position above demidov, but at this very early date it seems less likely. otherwise, it starts to look like a very poor decision on the part of the front office. it can be mitigated if who they draft this year is comparable to demidov, and no comparable rd to levshunov can be had. that still requires levshunov to become a very good defenseman in his own right, though i'm not so worried about that.

Right, and while there is a positional scarcity edge to D vs W in an absolute sense there was not in this draft relatively speaking if you or consensus believe(d) that Lev is on par with the field because Demidov was a tier above the field at F, so if they were dead set on trading back up into the top 10 maybe they should've went for the relative value with Demidov at 2 and play the odds that they can get back into the top 10 and get a defenseman that ends up better than Levshunov...They had so much draft capital to move up that they ended up using it on late 1sts to take forwards but maybe they should've just solved that issue at 2 and packaged enough to skip the forwards at 18 and 27 and go defense a bit higher up instead of risking an unprotected 1st in 25 just to take Lev, thats a massive massive bet on a player when there are 5-6 potentially in that same tier...Seems they kind of fell in love with the player and built their entire strategy off that even if it meant potentially not having the 1st overall pick in 25, seems really dumb tbh

none of it matters i guess, they took lev and have a potential top 3 pick this year, hope they both hit ceiling outcomes so this team isn't dogshit for the next 10 years

I had a preference of Demidov over Levshunov but at the end of the day I don’t think there was a right or wrong pick. Both are great prospects.

kind of a sin to trade an unprotected 1st during a rebuild anyway when you have no idea what a team might offer you for the pick and have really good odds of it being 1st overall, Carolina just learned that the hard way with the Bears

It's not that simple.

If the trade went through, KD would have been WAY more aggressive in free agency.

Because Chicago has their pick, he got Bedard a linemate and then called it a day. Back to the tank.

The team was historically bad and this year's free agent pool was not a game changer for a bottom feeder.

That unprotected first + was worth a lot and if KD was going to dangle it like that for Demidov he should have had a plan in motion that would work with the other GM before draft day.

fortunately this didn't happen because what exactly could they've added that would've made this a contending roster...it would've likely been a disaster move, he got saved by CBJ wanting to make a selection...if you like Demidov that much just take him 2nd and package the mid 1s from NYI, all the 2nds, the toronto 25 1st etc to move back up 10 spots to get the second best defenseman on the board, nobody thought the gap between Lev and the field was that big but they did for Demidov and the forwards

if their plan was to try to trick CBJ into trading the 4th pick for the 8-12th pick in 2025 by signing a bunch of overpriced UFA players after the deal so they're not bottom 3 bad then they're fools...thats not how you build a contender...easiest way for them to mess up this rebuild is to end it too soon and that deal might've did it

I much prefer the latter in this scenario. This draft looks very strong at the top

I could not have expressed my feelings towards the Lev vs Demidov situation better than you did in this thread. Well done my man.

Watched the Hogs game tonight - Arty's 4th pro game and I've watched 3 of the 4 games. To put it bluntly - he played like crap - mostly mental mistakes but also a few physical mistakes like missing passes and fumbling the puck when under pressure.

It's only 4 games, repeat.

He's had a poor start, but nobody is expecting him to play with the Hawks this season. He might not next year either.

It's typically a waiting game with D-men. There are none from the Bedard draft that have played a single NHL game yet.

With Lev's trajectory he was bound to run into a level where raw talent alone isn't enough to dominate. This year should realistically be rough for him. Next year will be the real tell. How much can he learn staying in the same place for a second year?

If he's still a free wheeling maverick next year I'll start to worry.
