Utica Comets @ Laval Rocket

Final Score -
Laval 4 Utica 3

Before I go into the game it is more important to relate the info on the injury to Comets Center Filip Engaras. With a little over 5 minutes remaining in the game Filip carried the puck into the Laval zone and at full speed was attempting to go around the net and was shoved hard by Zack Hayes in an attempt to get him off the puck. Filip lost his feet and crashed very hard into the end boards with his upper back and head making the first contact with the boards. He laid motionless on his back. The Laval goalie, Jakub Dobes, immediately signaled for help. The camera work in the building showed trainers from both teams attending to him and one of them stood and waved for paramedics help. They showed a stretcher appearing on the scene and a back board placed next to him on the ice and then the screen went to a large Laval Rocket logo. There was narration from Shaya relating what was happening , but no picture came back until he was being wheeled off and all the video showed was the Laval bench and the players banging their sticks on the boards and a large crowd on its feet clapping. Shaya said he was gesturing with a hand.

The latest update I can find was 3 hours ago relating that he was fully alert and responsive as he was taken to the hospital for medical attention. That was the same info the Comets released after the game. I can't find a more recent update.

EDIT
At 3:06 p.m. the Utica Comets said this morning his head and neck were confirmed to be OK and he was set to be released from the hospital in Quebec today (Saturday).

Laval Rocket 4 Utica Comets 3
SOG:
UTC - 3 14 13 - 30
LAV - 11 8 3 - 22

The Comets went with 7 D and 11 forwards. I was watching the Devils and the Comets. The Comets feed I got from flo hockey was in French. At 8 o'clock I also put on the World Series. The Comets came out in their usual lack luster play and I was more interested in the other images I had to watch. The reason for the 11F/7D alignment I have no idea.

The Comets have 17 forwards on the roster. 2, Gambardella and Parent are out with injuries and have not yet been activated - 15.
Wendt was sent to Adirondackon the 23rd - 14
Malone, Hardman, and Beckman were scratches - 11.

Forwards:
There appeared to be 3 fixed lines and a 4th with LWs rotating in to complete the line.

(20) Willman (10) Dowling (25) Foote
(19) Filmon (26) Schmelzer (24)Halonen
(79) Laberge (16) Engaras (11) Legare
(?) (15) Bowers (61) Stillman

D-Pairs:
(6) White (22) Casey
(3) MacKinnon (57) DeSimone
(55) van de Leest (32) Welinski (58) Diotte

Goal - (50) Daws

Period 1
The Comets were owned for the 1st period as has been the case since day 1. The SOG ended up 11-3 Laval and the score was 1-0.
At 12:51 of the 1st, the Comets recorded their 3rd and final shot of the period. They would go the last 7+ minutes without a shot.
Laval scored their goal at 14:45.

Period 2
Utica found some life and put 13 shots on goal.
They recorded the 1st 3 shots of the period with the third coming at 3:45.
Casey went off for high sticking at 8:03 and Laval scored their 2nd of the night, a PPG, 30 seconds later at 8:33.

Laberge and Hayes got 5 for hugging and snarling at 9:24.

Laval made it 3-0 at 10:02.

Laval took a 2 minute penalty for roughing at 13:23 and the Comets launched 6 SOG, but came up empty.

Period ends at 3-0 Laval leaving the Comets a long row to hoe as they have done every single game.

Period 3
3rd periods have looked like the best periods for the Comets thus far, at least for the games the scores indicate they were in.
That's misleading. They have been owned in most games, out of it early and then go through the motions as the other team sits back and denies them the puck, entry, and high danger shots.

Those who know the game know that shots on goal can be deceiving. Some shot stats speak for themselves. Being limited to 3, 4, or 5 shots a period says you are not in the contest, especially when the opponent is scoring and lives in your end of the ice during the time you are struggling. When your shots are wristers from long distances, dump ins on goal, and flips as you are being ridden out of position get counted as SOG, but are not really anything. That's been the case for the best part of the 5 games played thus far.

The 3rd period has been their best in those 2 games because hockey teams seem to be coached by men who all went to the same school of hockey genius. When you have a multiple goal lead, don't take chances, deny the opponent ice space through the neutral zone to your net front. 1-2-2 alignments with traps are common. This is not an easy system to master with young teams who are all gung-ho on offense. This has given the Comets the appearance of being a good 3rd period team in the 2 games they have finished 1 goal short, Belleville 5-4 and Laval 4-3. Those games were not that close. Goaltending has helped the Comets keep the game within reach, but the opponent has a goalie as well and when your shots are not all that challenging the score builds up. Then comes the shut it down system and the Comets get better chances, get some PPs as in Belleville, and score some goals, but in the end the other team prevails.

The D-corps has had it's problems aided by the failures of the forwards to do their jobs defensively particularly on the backcheck and picking up loose cannons in their end. Many of the goals have come from players completely left alone often with thier keeper down and out after a save on the other side or a cross the crease pass to a guy fore the easy snipe or tap in.

DeSimone I believe is a decent veteran D-man but the stats would beg to differ. He is currently a +29 D-man through 346 AHL GP. After 5 games with the Comets he is currently -6 and has been on the ice for 11 goals against. 3 have been PPGA which goes to the 4 on the ice, not usualy any 1 particular guy. Of the other 8, 5 have come with MacKinnon as a partner.

Mackinnon has been on the ice for 9 goals against with only 2 on the PK. We've already pointed out 5 were with DeSimone and 2 more with Welinski, who is also a veteran D-man. Dineen has been pairing him up with vets to shield hiom and it hasn't really worked ut all that well.

White was paired up with Diotte for the 1st 3 games for the same shielding purpose and they were on for 5 goals against thiose 3 games - 2, 2, 1.

van de Leest has faired much better in less time only having been on the ice for 1 goal against paired at the time with Welinski. Welinski himself has only been on the ice for 5 goals against, i on the PP and 2 with MacKinnon and the single 1 with van de Leest.

Diotte was also on the ice for 1 goal against with MacKinnon.

The projected D before the season started would have been comprised of Misyul, White, Vilen, Hatakka, DeSimone, and Casey. Welinski would have been #7 when he was signed to a PTO.
Diotte was the rookie who could have been worked in and out.

There would have been no room for MacKinnon and van de Leest.

Hatakka and Vilen got hurt in preseason and have yet to be reactivated. Casey made a case to stay with NJ because Pesce and L. Hughes were not available at the start of the season.

So, Diotte and MacKinnon have been in the lineup from the get go and their presence has been felt on the down side. All cannot be attributed to the weakened D as I have repeatedly said the forwards are doing an absolute shit job defensively, In Game 1 Daws was pulled after 2 periods and Ppoulter finished up looking much better. Daws looked good in Games 2 and Poulter had problems in game 3. Goaltending has not been the problem in games 4 and 5.

Misyul and Beckman are back for tonight. With Engaras out that leaves the Comets with only 11 forwewards unless one of Hardman or malone are ready to go. AHL.com shows no transactions for the Comets as of 3 p.m. which leads one to believe that 1 of Hardman and/or Malone is game ready.

Misyul should makes things a little bit better on the back end. Misyul, White on the left side with Casey, DeSimone, and Welinski on the right. They really need Vilen to get his ass down here. That would make them stronger than they have been all year. Hatakka would be icing on the cake.
As it is, I'm afraid we'll see MacKinnon back out there again, probably with Welinski.

Tonight it's the 0-5 Utica Comets vs the 4-1 Laval Rocket , this time in Utica at 7 p.m.

I see with the way NJ is playing the Devils fans are not as concerned with the Comets as they have been in the past and with the way Utica has been playing I don't blame them.

10/26/24
Laval Rocket at Utica Comets
Final score -
Laval 4 Utica 3

The Comets continue to sink. Now stand at 0-6. That mark has earned them the last place not only in the North Division, but also in the entire 32 team AHL. They are the only team without a point and only Iowa is another team without a win.

Last night they actually showed some spark. They scored the opening goal in a game for the first time. They actually skated with an opponent for the most part except when the Rocket gave up a goal. At that point the Comets had no answer for the Rocket speed and pressure. They outshot the Rocket 9-7 for the period, but still ended up down 2-1. They outshot them 16-7 in the 2nd, but only managed to match them 2-2 in goals so ended the 2nd still behind 4-3 and that's the way it would end. Laval's shell worked in the 3rd and they held Utica to 9 shots and came away with their 2nd win over the Comets in the last 2 nights.

Last night Poulter got only his 2nd start of the season. He was pulled at 12:10 of the 2nd period after surrendering his 4th goal on 13 shots. Daws came on and pitched a shutout the rest of the way stopping the only 5 shots he faced. This was very similar to the game that went the other way around on opening night when Daws surrendered 4 goals on 16 shots and was lifted at 7:46 of the 2nd and Poulter played well giving up 1 goal the rest of the way. I don't think this is going to go so well for Isaac if he is going to sit every game except the back to backs.

Both keepers have poor stats due to the way the team in front of them has been playing in their own end:

Nico Daws 5GP/4 starts - 3.90 GAA / .871 SAV%
Isaac Poulter 3GP/2 starts - 4.89 GAA / .804 SAV%

Bright spots were the play of Casey and Beckman. I don't have to tell anyone who has ever watched this guy how skilled he is with the puck on his stick. He is the only Comet who can make moves while in puck possession to elude opponents and keep moving with the puck. His puck skills are eye opening and at time jaw dropping for those who have never seen him. His passing is so much better than the rest of the Comets that many must actually be embarrassed that a 20-yr-old kid can handle the puck so much better than they can. Defensively he still has flaws and that's
why he is here.

As to Beckman, he is dangerous when on the ice. He knows where the scoring areas are and he manages to get there. A problem is that the other guys out there with him can't make the passes he would need to get his scoring chances. He also knows based upon where a shot s coming from where the rebound is likely to be and goes there before it happens. Gee, what an idea.:sarcasm:

I have to ask this question. Have you ever seen a Devil go to the entry gate and exchange wet gloves for dry ones and also bring back a banana to the bench and sit down and eat before his next shift comes up? Beckman did just that halfway through the 2nd period.

Friday night the Devils played 7 D-men in Laval and 11 Forwards. Of the roster players he knew he had sent Wendt to Adirondack; Gambardella, Parent, and apparently Hardman were injured and also would not play; Malone and Beckman were supposedly available. Beckman was sent down the same exact same time as Casey. Casey played in Laval. Beckman did not and I'm guessing did not make the trip. That left Malone, who did not play. I have no idea if he waseven with the team. Go figure.
DiNeen is famous for shortening his bench. He doesn't like to have more players than he needs come game time. When on the road that bites him in the ass because he can't get called up players to the game site on short notice. When at home, Adirondack is only a couple hours away.

Saturday night Beckman and Malone were in the lineup and no other forward was available.

Forwards:
(34) Beckman (10) Dowling (25) Foote
(20) Willman (15) Bowers (61) Stillman
(19) Filmon (26) Schmelzer (24) Halonen
(79) Laberge (13) Malone (11) Legare

D-pairs:
(6) White (22) Casey
(93) Misyul (57) DeSimone
(3) MacKinnon (32) Welinski

Goal - (1) Poulter 32:10 / Daws 26:27
Daws relieved Poulter after 12:10 of the 2nd period

Comets next game is Wednesday, 10/30, at 7 p.m. back in Laval for the 3rd straight game between the 2 teams in 6 days with Utica in Laval for 2 of the 3.

It’s a tough situation. The Devils fans were blessed with top prospects. Unfortunately for Utica, top prospects tend to skip the AHL.

The Devils have also let guys marinate in their respective leagues.

With most of the guys in Jersey locked up with term, you should “in theory” start to get guys.

I think it would be an interesting case study to see which teams do better? Why? How?

Vilen finally returns from the dead. Team plays in Laval tomorrow. If he gets here before the bus leaves, he should be penciled in for Wednesday's game with Laval. If not, definitely for Friday's back to back home games vs Rochester.

It seems it's always one plus followed by a negative. The farm rarely has a chance to play with its best roster. Vilen in and Dowling out. While really a #2 center he is the best man inn the middle that the Comets have. I note NJ fans think Fitz needs to make some kind of deal for a #4 center due to Lazar's injury. Dowling is the best the Comets can offer and he's not even good enough to fill in for a Devil, which is what the farm is supposed to house. Though I guess it's OK if Dowling is the best the farm is given.

The Comets are also without their #4 in Engaras after a nasty headlong crash into the boards in Laval last Friday. Yeah, that's OK because suck Bowers and worse Malone will have to carry the load. This is how the actual #3/4 Schmelzer ends up as the #1 center every season. Great depth building, Fitz. Suffer the consequences for ignoring the farm that you actually need and it's so early in the season. Wait until you have multiple injuries and actually need guys from the farm to stay afloat.

Comets 0-6 and counting.

This past draft was the first one where NJ finally took a couple of centers (albeit late) to maybe start to backfill the organizational depth. Of course that will take a couple of years to pay dividends. Really a shame they didn't start making an effort a few years ago.

There's a way to plug in players to hold down the fort until the cavalry comes in. Fitz has made little effort to do that. He's paid the price for not doing such as well and Dowling is the latest example.

Vilén is LHD, they have four LHD after sending Van De Leest down. (The others are Misyul, White, MacKinnon).

I assume this means they’re keeping and playing Welinski, who’ll be the 3rd RHD with Casey & DeSimone.

Ah yes, my bad...not sure why I was thinking Vilen was RD.

Makes sense that Welenski would be the 3rd RD with Casey & DeSimone given he's a vet with NHL experience. I'm excited to see what Diotte can do, but he's still only 21 years old and coming straight out the Q.

On a side note, looks like Adirondack's off to a good start. 3-0 with Brodeur stopping 52 of 53 shots so far this season.

Yeah, I was going to post about the Thunder, but then decided to wait a few more games and see how they go before posting Juggernaut gifs again.

1-1

(I'm doing 3 things at the same time so, I'm not doing a play by play. Just keeping up on the key stuff)

Laval hits the post on a point blank uncontested shot on a centering pass from the corner. Shot from the bottom of the left circle. Comets surrender these kind of shots game in and game out.

Legare in again, makes a beautiful centering pass and it's over the net.

Legare is playing center tonight and doing a very good job. Perhaps DiNeen once again is unaware of the best spot for one of his players.

Laval gets 2 for holding at 15:04.

1:10 to go on the PP haven't set up yet.
Again down the ice.
Cleared again.
NoGo PP

Laval celebrates their kill by scoring to make it 2-1.
17:50

Period 2 ends
2-1 Laval
SOG:
11-9 Laval
2-period total
22-15 Laval

Comets are playing 5 guys in a bunch in their own zone and the Rocket are loving it. Flying around the zone and setting up one timers on centering passes. It's like a practice where no one challenges the shooter.

The turnovers by the Comets in their zone are inexcusable. Bad passes. Cannot control loose pucks. Grab it and it just comes loose off their stick without being pressured. They just flat out give it away while trying unsuccessfully to control it.

The D are incapable of defeating a puck carrier who wants to go around them. The guy drops a shoulder and muscles his way past and then our D-man slashes at him or reaches out to grab him and then the guy is on his way towards the net with the guy he beat trying to catch up.

Forwards don't even try to physically disrupt a guy's efforts to go past them.

It's push, reach, shove, wave their stick on the ice, and hope Daws or Poulter pulls the puck out of their ass.

Period 3

Stillman off the rush coming down beloow he circle and is stopped. He gets this smae cahnce at least once a game and sometimes more. He cannot pick a spot and score 1 on1 with the keepers.

Comets to the PP at 6:02
:30 seconds gone and nothing of any kind.
Comets chase the puck back down the ice 1on 1., That guys centers it in front to a mate all alone. I mean all ALONE. Where the F**K are the Comets. Daws stones him. This pp was s**t.

Nowa shot off the faceoff and it's tipped on and Daws another big stop.

A mixup in front and more peanlties. Nope jusrt Stillman. 4on4.
Now a PP for the Rocket.
Comets kill it.

Stillman ashot from the outside of the right circle. Gloved faceoff.

Beckman a good chance crossing in front on a busted Laval play but he is stopped.

TVTO
9:03 to go
SOG for the period thus far 6-3 Laval

Foote takes passes and with his head down turns into traffic and loses the puck time after time.

Willman stopped on a 1-timer. Lots of attempts........ but it's cleared out.

Icing Comets.

Icing Comets.

They cannot hit the long pass.

Daws another stop on his doorstep.

Comets cannot wrest the puck from the Rocket on puck battle after puck battle. Loose puck after loose puck. Pucks of f stick going loose time after time. So damned frustrating.

Comets work hard, but are just not blessed with hockey skills.

Colton white coast to coast and stopped. Chaos in front comes out to the bluelinge and Casey creeps down the middle dishes to the left dot for a 1-timer stopped and the keeper flat on his back covers the puck.

1:11 to go

Tic tac to byt he Rocket up the ice and finally a 1 on 1 shot is into the open net and Laval goes up 3-1.
ENG 19:13

Comets to the PP and Halonen scores with 3.8 secnds left.

Comets drop to 0 -7.

Final score 3-2.

SOG
UTC - 6 9 14 - 29
LAV - 11 11 7 - 29

Tag Bertuzzi recalled from Adirondack. Tag is listed as a Center/Right Wing. He has played 3 games for the Thunder and has 1G/1A/2pts.
First off will DiNeen even play him? If he does where will it be?
- Malone has not impressed in the middle.
- Legare actually looked good in the middle in the last game.
- Wendt is a RW, but has nort shown anything.

Maybe he leaves Legare in the middle and moves Bertuzzi out on Laberge's RW

The Comets went into Laval last night with a total of 12 forwards. With the recall of Dowling on Tuesday the Comets had to recall Wendt just to have 12 up front.

On 10/20 in Toronto Hardman was injured. Apparently DuNeen figured he'd have Beckman since he was sent down the same day as Casey for the 10/25 game in Laval. Thus. still 12 forwards. He didn't and the Comets played the game with 11 forwards and 7 D.

On 10/26 he had Beckman and therefore 12 forwards.

DiNeen knows he doesn't have:
Gambardella
Parent
Engaras
Hardman
and now Dowling

So, he called up Wendt. What does that do for the Comets? It gave them 12 forwards. Yes, 12 forwards, but only 3 centers. So what did he do. He put Legare at center. What did that do?
He cobbled together 2 weak lines of:

- Filmon/Legare/Halonen - 2 goals between them going in.

Filmon has done nothing.
Legare had a net front scramble goal this game.
Halonen had a PP goal and Dowling fed goal coming in.
He would get a 6 on 4 goal PP goal in this game in the final seconds which had nothing to do with the line he sakted on all night.

- Laberge/Malone/Wendt - 0 goals between them going in and 0 goals going out.

Laberge is an energy line grinder that doesn't score many goals.
Malone is a weak center that doesn't usually play there when Dowling, Bowers, Schmelzer, and Engaras are ready to go. He was forced into the middle with Dowling in NJ and Engaras out for who knows how long after his head first crash into the boards on 10/25.
Wendt was sent to Adirondack because he was the weakest forward in a group of not so good forwards in the first place.

Beckman and Foote were together but with Schmelzer instead of Dowling.
Halonen has been skating with Filmon , but with Schmelzer in the middle.
Laberge and Legare are the wings for Engaras on the defensive minded energy line which was already weakened with Malone as their center.
The only line still intact was Willman/Bowers/Stillman and Bowers has proven over 2 seasons that he is not a good center in that he doesn't distribute the puck well. he is a guy who wants to score goals.

All of this finagling around with the lines comes as a result of DiNeen never planning ahead. He doesn't carry a full roster. Thus, he doesn't have guys working with more than 1 center or jockeying around on lines in practices so he can present the best possible lineup in any given situation.

MacKinnon is in on this as well as the guys he signs in the offseason for depth suck and DiNeen doesn't want to use them anyways. The biggest culprit in all of this is Fitzgerald who doesn't give him a decent roster to begin with.

I'd go:
Willman/Bowers/Halonen
Beckman/Schmelzer/Foote
Filmon/Legare/Stillman
Laberge/Malone/Bertuzzi
Wendt is the only extra up front unless Hardman is ready in which case I don't know what the Coach D will do.

Based on some of his past alignments it might be something like:
Hardman/Bowers/Stillman
Willman/Schmelzer/Foote
Beckman/Legare/Halonen
Laberge/Malone/Bertuzzi

scratched:
Filmon and Wendt
I'd want to see what Bertuzzi can do.

If this team stays as it is and Gambardella and Parent come back, I'd send Wendt and Filmon down.
Bring back Dowling back and Malone goes down as well.

I'm so sorry you have to put up with this. Maybe in another year or so guys like Filmon and Squires show up and start producing. The team has talent on defense and in goal. Why they completely forgot they need forwards too makes zero sense.

kinda think it's time to send Nemec down for awhile as long as the big club has the best RHD depth in the NHL. Let McDermid be the pretend 7th D or trade a late pick for a more suitable benchrider.

Rochester Americans at Utica Comets

Forwards:
(20) Willman (15) Bowers (61) Stillman
(19) Filmon (11) Legare (24) Halonen
(48) Bertuzzi (13) Malone (79) Laberge
(34) Beckman (26) Schmelzer (25) Foote

D-Pairs:
(93) Misyul (57) DeSimone
(83) Vilen (3) MacKinnon
(6) White (22) Casey

Goal - (50) Daws

Period 1
Comets played a good 1st period.

Scored first with a 5 on 3 PP at 3:58

During the period Willman and Schmelzer shot the puck into the keeper's pads both on shorthanded breakaways.

Foote had the puck in the slot, pulled a spinorama that left the defender defending nothing and ended up facing the goalie from no more than 5 ft and his backhander failed.

Those missed chances were among the Comets 11 shots in the period.

Rochester scored the tying goal on a PP at 13:53. It was their 2nd SOG of the period.

Utica's good play was curtailed by taking 4 more penalties in the last 12 minutes of the period. They were the only penalties called as the refs started game management penalizing the Comets to equalize the 3 they had called on Rochester in the first 7 minutes. The PK was effective, but it ruined the lines and D-pairings messing up the good thing they had going in the first half of the period

Period ended tied 1-1
SOG 11-3 Utica

Period 2
The 1st period was the last of good things for the Comets.
The Comets came out in the second playing like we are used to seeing
them.
Willman took a hooking penalty at 19:41 of the 1st and Murray scored the go ahead goal for the Amerks on the PP at 1:20 of the 2nd.

After the go ahead goal Utica was unable to muster much of anything while being penned up in their own zone for extended periods, surrendering point blank shots off passes to wide open Amaerks. Losing puck batlles in all 3 zones, losing every race to loose pucks, taking 3 guys playing the same loose puck in 3 battles on the boards just to get the puck out into the neutral zone, missing every opportunity to capitalize on good chances by flubbing control of the puck, whiffing on shot attempts, failing to make/take passes, falling all over the ice, were out skated and out puck skilled, and ended up still down 2-1 at the end of the period.

Penalties were 1 each
SOG were 9-6 Rochester.

Period 3
The period was a complete disaster.
From the drop of the puck the Comets could do nothing right. That included from the goal out.The Comets ended uo assessed 8i penalties to the Amerks 2.

They were down 4-1 when the shit really started.
At 9:52 Vilen was called for holding. He went to the ref and argued the call on his way to the box. That set the refs up for what would follow.

Less than a minute after Vilen's penalty ended the Amerks scored #5 at 12:42.

At 14:35 The Amerks strike again 6-1.

At 15:53 Laberge was called for tripping on a play in which he shoulder checked an Amerk into the boards. His stick, skates, knees, butt, nor any part of his equipment or body caused this guy to fall. Tripping was impossible.
Laberge was livid but went to the box.

Seconds later at 16:06 Bowers, who is the least physical guy on the Comets (that's saying something as there are a lot of non-physical players on this team), was chasing an Amerk inside the Comets blueline while killing the penalty to Laberge and he barely pushed the guy who went sprawling across the ice and got 2 for cross checking.

5 seconds later the Amerks scored a 5 on 3 PP goal at 16:11. 7-1 Amerks.

16:11 would also be the time of Laberge's Misconduct for abuse of officials as he was all over the refs for this 5 on 3 setup. Remember Bowers is still in the box.

At 16:37 Legare Kicks the shit out of Nikita Novikov on the boards at the Comets blueline. They both get 5 for fighting, but now Legare too gets 10 minutes for abuse of officials. Now the bench gets iinto it and there's a bench penalty called for abuse of officials.

DiNeen gets loud and he is told he is out of the game for abuse of officials. The ref goes to the cscorer's table and relays the call.
He comes to center ice and motions DiNeen out of the the arena. DiNeen says, "NO". More arguing and Coach gets hies fine 's worth. The Ref shakes his head yes after each point is angrily unloaded upon him. When DiNeen has had his say he goes onto thice and takes his time walking to the gate.

Filmon serves the bench penalty.
Once all of the on ice/off ice fiasco is settled the game resumses with the Comets down 2 men again. At 16:48, 10 seconds after the bench penalty made it a 5 on 3 PP the Amerks scored #8.

Daws looks like someone has killed his new puppy. He hasn't exactly been shrp in the 3rd, but his protection has basically been non existent.

The period has yeilded 6 goals to Rochester, 2 on 5 on 3 PPs.
The Comets were penalized 8 times to the Amerks 2 , 1 of which was a matching major.
6 goals on 13 shots.

SOG for the period
13-2 Rochester.

Final score -
Rochester 8 Utica 1

SOG:
ROC - 4 9 13 - 26
UTC - 11 6 2 - 19

Utica mustered 8 shots for the last 2 periods. This team is playing like they may never win a game. I'm sure they won't go winless, but the final results will be atrocious if this roster remains unchanged. What the Hell does anyone think will happen when injuries strike and NJ calls up a couple more ad the Comets end up playing with 6 or more ECHL call-ups? I mean right now there are 4 guys inthe lineup that are either ECHL call-ups or should be ECHL reassignments.

Tag Bertuzzi - 1st game up and he didn't show anything.
Josh Filmon - Is the type of 1st year pro who is not ready for the AHL. Hasn't shown in any way that he belongs. pointless in 6GP.
Jack Malone - Is defintiely not an AHL center. pointless in 5 GP.
Dylan Wendt was already sent down, but combined with the Engaras injury was recalled when Dowling went up. 3 games 1 point

It's not like the rest of this team is sparkling.

The Comets right now are the worst team in the AHL at 0-8 and the only team in the AHL without a single win.

He's supposed to be a pwer forward, but every time he tries to beat a defender going down the boards he fails to get by and turns the puck over or at least kills the rush
Nolan Foote leads the team in points with 7, but only 2G (1PP/1ES)

Casey is #2 with 6A/6Pts. 4GP Couldn't ask more form him and he'd even have more points if the rushes he's led produced some goals.

Take him off the PP and he is doing very little
Halonen has 5Pts 4G (3 PPG - 1 5on3/1 6on4) 8GP

Dowling has been playing the same kind of game here as you have seen in NJ. He would have more points if the bozos he keeps givin ghte puck in scoring areas would only produce.
Dowling 4Pts 2G/2A 6GP

Just got here and is 1PPG
Beckman 3Pts 1G/2A 3GP

These 3 guys arte on on 1-way NJ contracts and making money. hey are supposed to score goals.
Willman 2Pts 1G/1A 8GP
Bowers 2Pts 2A 8GP
Hardman 1Pt 1G 4GP

Stillman 1Pt 1A 7GP Needs to get his head out of his ass and strt putting up poionts

Schmelzer 0Pts 8GP Last year's top point getter. It's oy an excuse but he has been centered Willman, Halonen, Foote, and Beckman and they have not produced.

These 2 are not expected toput up a lot of points they are 4th/energy line players who kill penalties, stir things up,play a defensive game.
Legare 1Pt 1G 8GP
Laberge 0Pts 8GP

Diotte and van de Leest have been sent down.

If I missed somebody it's because he has done 0.

Bowers, Foote, Willman, and Hardman (when he plays) seem to be trying to stay out of trouble so they'll be ready for their re-call.

I left the D out of this because it's the forwards we expect to put up the golas and points. If they were doing such the D-men would be picking up assists and would be open to shoot a lot more often and maybe pop a few goals.

Next up. Rochester instant replay tomorrow night at the Utica Aud again at 7 p.m.
0-9 or 1-8 iwouldn'yt bet anything on them winning. I can only hope. Betting on a win currently with these guys would mean losing a lot of money

The NJ hierarchy should be ashamed of the disaster they have constructed for a farm this season. Only they can do anything to help.

Isn't MacKinnon an ECHL defenseman?

If MacDermid and Nemec are going to be in the press box every game wouldn't it make sense to have them playing for the Comets instead? And where is Diotte?

Diotte is in Adirondack. He wasn't/isn't AHL ready and that's not good considering the AHL team he's playing for, but even MacKinnon is way better than he is.

MacKinnon would be an ECHL D-man if Hatakka ever got off his death bed.

Welinski is better than Mac as well, but nobody connected to NJ seems to want to sign him beyond his AHL PTO. Apparently NJ is so strapped for money they can't afford him. His PTO has 16 more games before it runs out. That's a much smaller Paycheck than an actual contract would pay him. They can also sign him to another one when this one runs out providing no other AHL team wants him and/or he leaves.

NJ is paying for non producing guys they have signed here. Guess they can't see wasting any more even though it was their lack of concern when they were signed in the first place:

Foote - $825K
DeSimone - $775K
Justin Dowling - $500K
Bowers - $225K
Willman - $225K
Halonen - $175K
Schmelzer - $275K
Hardman - $350K
Colton White - $250K
Beckman - $125K
Hatakka - $775K as long as he's in NJ? $125K when reassigned.
Daws - $350K
Laberge - $120K
total - $3,976,000

The other 10 are on NHL 2-ways and making between $70K and $85K.
That brings the AHL $$$ paid for the lower half of 2-ways $905K.

$3,976,000
+905K
total $4,881,000 paid in salaries to the Utica Comets players on NJ contracts.

That's not exactly a huge amount of money for an actual hockey team in the 3rd best league in the world. Some have been saying the 2nd best overall. They use the number of guys beyond the top draft picks who can't make it in the NHL and more who also can't make in the AHL. Those are the top young players from those leagues. I'm not going to bicker over it, but the point is the AHL is a talented league containing many ex-NHL and future NHL players, some of whom will be stars.

Many NHL franchises recognize this fact and construct very competitive farms with their own prospects and those from other teams they have acquired through trades. They pick up others who have been released from their contracts due to there being no room and they become real possibilities for their new clubs. There are many veteran players who have worn out their titles as prospects, but are very good players to build a team of prospects around, while also serving as adequate depth players for the parent team.

Fitz and other NJ GMs have a history of shortchanging the farm after the first season of an affiliation. Utica had a very good team in the 21-22 season, but were missing proven top AHL centers. The center issue has never even been addressed. In fact, since the prospect pool shrunk it was obvious they felt no need to spend $$$ on proven AHL veteran talent and the good players that were here sufferdd for it and yet, minus those top players the team fought tooth and nail to qualify for the playoffs and went out in the 1st round.

Last seaon they signed even lower level talent and in spite of a continual output of everything they had, they finished out of the playoffs.

This season, as it was obvious, the forward prospect pool is non existent, the effort to provide anything more than what could be scraped up for the least amount of finacial output has left DIiNeen (who I am not convinced is all that anyways) a group of forwards that don't have what it takes to win games in this league. When NJ is hurting, good luck to them bringing in any of these forwards to make any kind of impact in the NJ lineup. Fitting a guy onto a line of competent NHL players, they may keep their head above water, but have already proven they are not NHL players. It can only be hoped they will not hurt the team.

DiNeen has already shown he has no faith in some of what he has here. Twice in the last 5 games he has gone with 7 D and 11 forwards for 2 reasons. 1, he didn't carry enough depth to cover a single missing forward while away from home because he doen't believe there is anyone talented enough in the depth pool that was provided to him in the first place. He came into the season knowing that he had 14 forwards that would start out the season and 3 of them were suspect at having enough talent to make a difference: Wendt, Malone, Filmon. He was missing Beckman, Gambardella, and Parent with preseason issues who would have replaced the 3 aforementioned.

Beckman finally became game ready and was sent down on 10/21, the same day as Casey, but when the Comets took the ice in Laval on 10/25 only Casey was there. Apparently counting on Beckman, Wendt was sent to Adirondack on 10/23. The Comets played with 11 forwards and 7 D in Laval.

In that Laval game the Comets #4 center, Filip Engaras was injured in a bad crash into the end boards. God knows how long he'll be out. The irony here is that with decnt AHL level centers Schmelzer would be the Comets #4 and Engaras would be in Adirondack.

On 10/26 back in Utica, Beckman was in the lineup. Malone who had been playing RW when in the lineup was now the #4 center.

The Comets would next play back in Laval on 10/30, but before that would happen Dowling was recalled by the Devils and Utica recalled Wendt. Wendt did nothing to account for the loss of their best center. That left them with 3 centers including Malone who was in at #4 for Engaras. Nathan Legare, the energy line RW, was stapled into the middle as #3 while Bowers and Schmelzer would be tossups for #s1 and 2.
Wendt would play RW on the energy line now centered by Malone which left only Laberge as an original member. The other 2 were not adequate replacements.

On 10/31 Tag Bertuzzi was reaclled from Adirondack. On the next night, 11/1 vs the Rochester Americans, he played LW on the "energy line" still centered by Malone with Laberge now moved to his offside RW so Bertuzzi could play his natural LW. The Comets were obliterated by the Rochester Americans 8-1 and heard some boos at the end of period 2. They heard a chorus of boos on several occasions during the 6 goal explosion by the Amerks in period 3 and as they left the ice the chorus was louder from the few patrons who hadn't yet left the building.

Last night on 11/2, the Rochester Americans were again the opponent back in the Utica Aud for the 2nd of a rare back to back weekend duel in the same building between the 2 foes located a mere 2 hours away. DiNeen had seen enoguh of trying to cable together a lineup of guys who further weakened the promise the lowly Comets were already playing with. Filmon and Wendt were scratched and the Comets played with 11 forwards and 7 D.

The Comets 7 D consisted of White and Casey, Misyul and DeSimone, and Vilen, MacKinnon, and Welenski who rotated in and out and played a good game. The rest of the Comets reached down deep, found their wounded pride, and put on their best performance of the season. It was a performance thast provided them with their 1st taste of what this city's hockey fans have always provided to a team that plays their hearts out, win or lose. They fell behind 1-0 late in the first in a period that they outshot the Amerks 6-4 in a very tight checking contest on both ends of the ice. The goal came on the Amerks 2nd shot of the period at 6:46.

The Comets tied it up with a PPG by Nolan Foote at 6:30 of the 2nd.

The tough contest tilted in he Amerk's favor as they took the lead at 11:28 of the 3rd. Instead of watching the Comets wilt as trhey had in every other game this eason when a team scored on them when they were trying to come back, they dug down deeper and kept pushing. At 18:05 Poulter scrambled to the bench. With 6 attackers on the ice, Casey tied it up with his 1st AHL goal.
The 3rd ended with the score knotted at 2.

THE COMETS HAD EARNED THEIR FIRST POINT OF THE SEASON IN GAME #9!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Both teams had big chances in the OT, but both keepers kept their respective teams in the hunt, but Poulter was much busier and held the fort. The Comets failed to capitalize on a PP for the last 1:28 of the OT.

Then came the Shootout. Utica has been abysmal in this aberration of a hockey game. You only have to watch the Comets futility at breakaways in game after game to recognize the reason for their terrible results in shootouts. Part of it has to be on DiNeen when you see his selection of players to try their tricks of the trade.

Konsta Helenius went 1st for the Amerks and Poulter stopped him.

DiNeen started out with Beckman. He's been a high scoring AHL forward with the Iowa Wild. Why not see what he's got. The keeper made a semi-split glove stop on a mid-level shot. If he goes high, he scores, but he didn't get it up.

Mason Jobst scored for the Amerks on their 2nd try. 1-0 Rochester

Nolan Foote went high after a deke and scored. 1-1

Isak Rosen went next for the Amerks and Poulter came up big.

Now, the DiNeen head scratching. For the win he chose 4th line foerchecking, back checking, banger Sam Laberge. He outdeked himself and he and the keeper were lying face to face and the puck was stopped by Houser.

4th try for the Amerks Vsevold Komarov. He was the guy Legare pummeled late in Friday's game. Time for some revenge? He got his as he scored. 2-1 Amerks.

To try and stay alive DiNeen went with another of the regular energy line, Legare, Could he get inside Komarov's head again?
Nope. Houser with the save and the Comets end up with their 1st point, albeit on the losing end of a shootout.
