2024/25 Trade Rumours, Speculation etc Thread

I don't want him to get a retirement deal that's way too long and far too much money a la Chandler Stephenson.

The 7 yrs at over $7M per year estimates by some sites when he started hot was just not something I'd want the Jets to do.

If it's a 3 yr deal, maybe, but Pionk would know he could get 6 or 7 yrs in FA.
Fair enough.

My opinion…
Let both Iafallo and Apples walk..we can replace them with Lambert and Tanev cheaper.
If Pionk wants more than 6yrs and/or 7.5m AAV, we should let him go as well..though we currently don’t have anyone who can take his slot.
I think it’s likely Ehlers is gone to FA and Chevy will have some serious work to do this offseason

I think Samberg is starting to show enough with a variety of partners and roles over the past couple years where if Pionk does walk, we can have high confidence in his play as a 2LD regardless of who he is with. he grades out as one of the top defensive dmen this year while playing with one of the most chaotic Defenseman in their own zone i have ever seen on the Jets.

Sign ehlers for pretty much anything 9m or under, sign Iafallo and try to sign Pionk but not overpay.

Apples and Tanev replaced by whichever of the two rookies make it out of camp, maybe lambert on the 3rd and chib on the 4th? Ford also deserves a shot at the club but he might be the odd man out.

Oh and sign Samberg long term asap

Ha! I'm the last person to ask about value - it's so greek to me. I think that even though AI might have been overpaid on his last contract, he will be signing with someone that will give him a raise, and he's also looking to sign what might be his last contract

I think an up and comer team looking to start challenging for the playoffs might give him an AAV of 4.5 over 6 or 7 years. Too much in my mind.

Tanev is a bit older and has a lower base salary, so I see his term and AAV to likely be lower. He might be ok with doing something like 4X3 with a signing bonus.

Again though, I'm no expert :)
$4.5M isn't even a raise for Iafallo if next year's cap is $95.5M. $4.7M would be about equivalent to his current cap hit.

OTOH, if you offered Iafallo $4M x 4 under a $95.5M cap, it would be equivalent to a $3.4M x 4 deal under the cap as it was when he signed his current deal ($81.5M).

If his current cap hit was $3.4M would he be considered overpaid? And if not, then $4M on his next deal probably wouldn't be an overpay either...right?

Lol that's some magical mathworks.

I think it's widely accepted Iafallos contact was high for what he brought.

I do think he's going to get 4.5x probably 5 or 6 years. Will the Jets be willing to pay that?

Iafallo is too versatile to let go. Tanev and Lambert can not replace what he brings. Effective at 5v5 and special teams. Having a guy that can play in all situations is always valuable.

$4.5M is too high for the Jets...

But giving him $4M would actually be a fair price under the higher cap and it maybe wouldn't feel like a pay cut to Iafallo, even though it is, in relative terms. Still might be too high for the Jets depending on the Ehlers and Pionk situations.

I think Iafallo might sign for less. Probably term is more important. Maybe a 4-year deal. He's been mainly a 3rd / 4th line F the last few years, so I think he might come under 4M. Evolving Hockey projects about 3x3.4M for Iafallo. I think 4x3.6M would be good.

Agree here, and Iafallo has been really consistent and good over the last couple of months even when some others were slumping pretty bad.

He seems kind of like a Perreault who is less offensively talented but better defensively.

Consistently good.

Can't argue.

I would be really surprised if he took a pay cut. Just compare him to Nino this year. Nino had a good start but has been cold. Iafallo started the year with guys who can't score. But every line he has been on he has been a catalyst. He's not only PP2 like Nino, he's PK1, and now PP1. For me he's worth Nino's money easy, probably more.

This team is definitely going to need goals if Ehlers walks, and Iafallo has put up 20 in the past with good linemates.

I think Nino's contract is more likely to be a burden in the final years, as the wheels start to fall off.

The only thing that worries me about the future is the number of long term contracts the Jets dish out. It's not bad to have 10 guys on your team 30+, that's still a prime age. You get 10 guys 35+, the likelihood of having some anchor contracts is heavy.

Samberg and Perfetti are at the age you want to lock them up long term. But you always need youth pushing to make the team better. The Dallas way.

Yeah…… can’t eat your cake and have it too….

Does Tampa Bay miss Stamkos this year even if they could have signed him for 4 years at 6 mill.

He signed in Nashville @ 4 years @ 8 mill.

Nash ville with a do over would not sign him @ 4 years @ 5 mill…

Sometimes hard decisions have to be made!

Jets best re- signs have been Namestaknov and Neiterider ( spelling sucks on foreigners ( Don Cherry style)….. F***~it

They both wanted to stay….

Alex is gone unless he gives a sweet heart ❤️ deal…

Ehlers is gone unless he accepts a sweet heart ❤️ deal…. 8.5 mill Schief / Hellybuck deal

It’s hard to keep the Band together if they don’t in their heart want to stay ….., as their is always a plug in the grass willing to over pay and over promise to steal your hot girlfriend.

He's said that he wants to come back, IIRC

I think he's a part of the ice fishing crew with Helle and Connor (before he had a baby lol)
Its going to be a very interesting offseason.

The Jets could have a lot of holes to fill.

Can you imagine if all our FAs walked??? What would you do as a GM in that scenario?

Personally?

If all the UFAs walk, I'd use that as an opportunity to start integrating youth. I'd find a vet LD to play on the bottom pairing with Salo in a very sheltered role (like they did with Samberg) or give Heinola - Salomonsson a good run there

I'd promote Lambert to the top 6 and Chib to the middle 6. Maybe use existing depth to round out the line up and use July 1 to backfill the depth

Connor Schief Vilardi
Lambert Names Perfetti
Nino Lowry Chibs
Gus Barron Kupari

Jomo Demelo
Samberg Schenn
Vet UFA/Ville Salomonsson
Stanley

Then I would pivot immediately and start working on long term extensions for Connor, Vilardi, Samberg, and Perfetti. IF for some reason one or more don't want to sign long term, I'd use my Chevy magic to use them in PLD type trades for young, team controlled players

That line up i posted will 100% take a step backwards during the regular season, so I'd be prepared to be OK with that

Not sure what else a guy could do

It wouldn't be a bad draft for a step back year with McKenna available.

I'll be surprised if a team like the Canucks doesn't offer Ehlers $11million this offseason.

Jets double down on what they have. I think both Iafallo and Appleton would re-sign. Vilardi is guaranteed at least one more year, which could be the next big trade. Offseason probably Samberg, Connor and Lowry re-sign with term.

Maybe you have

Connor-Scheif-Gabe
Perfetti-Namestnikov-Chibrikov/Iafallo
Nino-Lowry-Apples/Iafallo
Barron-Kupari-Iafallo/Chibrikov/Apples
Gus as #13

Moose something like

Barlow-Yager-Lambert
Wagner-Toninato-Ford
Zhilkin-Julien-JAD

And you have some depth at forward to develop in the process.

Defense I don't think the Jets can afford to lose Pionk, but there has to be a number for him the Jets are willing to go with in both AAV and term. If they do lose him, I think the lineup you see now is what you get next year. Fleury re-signs. Heinola maybe gets PP2, competing with Miller. Salomonsson has a chance for a job in camp if he makes strides.

Jets draft a defenseman with their 1st pick.
