I think that’s the disappointment with chevy. It’s easy to say Winnipeg is on every no trade list and free agents don’t want to come here. It’s not always true. But there have been players available and chevy needs to target them aggressively.

Dylan Strome comes to mind.

As difficult as it can be, if the current window closes with minimal playoff success it will be on chevy because it’s his job.
If you don't think being the GM of the Winnipeg Jets isn't harder than most if not all other markets then you aren't looking at this fairly and just have something against Chevy or you like the new car smell too much. What more can Chevy do than have enough talent and the right coaching in place that has this team fighting not just to make the playoffs but fighting for 1st overall in the entire league ?

You mean puck moving Dmen?
Yes. I think all Dman should be puck movers. But I don't think puck moving/scoring should come at the expense of the other parts of the Dman's job.
Its more than puck moving. It's D who can score or set up goals with shots, setting up players in the offensive zone, rushing the puck and pinching.

Sure. The extension of puck moving all the way to the O zone. Most offensive Dmen still don't score a lot of goals. They collect a lot of assists. But regardless of how they score, or how much they score, it shouldn't come at the cost of playing defence. Prevent/block the shot, recover the puck, move the puck out of the D zone with possession, maintain the O zone, pinch, shoot/pass. What have I missed?

A Dman who scores 40-50 pts but is weak in his own end is only half a Dman. Another one who hits and blocks shots but can't retrieve the puck or get it out of the D zone is also only half a Dman. IMO Some will do those things better, at a higher level than others. So we will have 1st, 2nd, 3rd pairs.

Funny to hear the importance of puck moving D and shutdown D etc etc... and how 3rd pairing D are not such a big deal talentwise... when we threw away two Dmen that are both top4 capable - and now we are about to overpay Pionk on a huge gamble that his two contract seasons are the 'real' pionk and all the other seasons were anomalies haha

And now we have Schenn for another season but at 36 years old which is also a bit iffy...

What have you missed? Pionk plays a lot of toughs, on the best defensive team in the nhl

I think Ehlers is a key cog during the regular season to get the Jets into a strong playoff position. He generates 5v5 offense playing with limited linemates like Namestnikov and Perfetti while unlocking a lot of the firepower on the PP. Without him the Jets' offense is very top heavy, and easy to shut down. We saw last night and frequently through the season that Ehlers creates secondary offense when the top line is in the doldrums. I highly doubt that Chibrikov or Lambert will come close to generating the secondary offense that Ehlers does. Consider that Perfetti was more productive than either Chibrikov or Lambert at the AHL level when he was 18 and 19 but has taken a few years to create offense at the NHL level.

So for me there is really no question as to Ehlers' high value during the regular season. Is contributing substantially to making the playoffs valuable enough for an 8-9M AAV? I'm not sure, but the first task in the NHL is to make the playoffs and that won't be a given next year and beyond.

If Ehlers has a good playoff performance this year, then I think it would be foolish for the Jets to not try hard to re-sign him. They really have no other avenue to add premium offensive talent in the short term. Spending $8M to re-sign Appleton and Iafallo doesn't move the needle if the Jets end up as a one-line team offensively.
if the question was re-sign ehlers vs appleton+iafallo, i think ehlers is is the easy answer there, and replace the other roles with chibrikov and perhaps barron on the 3rd line. i share your thoughts that i don't think anyone is stepping in and replacing ehlers' production in the prospect pool. the list of fwds acheiving 60+ pts in 16+ mins/gp is pretty slim. and the consider him being the overall driver of 2nd line offense with a rotating cast of linemates over the years. since 2021: the Jets fwds to achieve 0.73 ppg (60 pts/82 gp) in min of 40 gp are: Connor, Scheifele, Vilardi, Wheeler, Ehlers and PLD. So top line, PLD while he was here and Ehlers with only 1 of those years primarily on the PP1 (24-25).

which leads me to the thought that at some point, the Jets will need to make some decisions with some of their higher ranked fwd prospects.... between lucius, chibrikov, lambert, yaeger and barlow how much room is there for them to come in over the next 1-3 years notably in the top-9 if the Jets are extending all these guys? chibrikov strikes me as a 4-line capable player. lucius and lambert are kind of top-6 or nothing for me, & not sure about yaeger or barlow (ill defer to others on the prospects in general though). imo they may fall into a heinola situation where they're all sitting and may not get in unless there's injuries or whatnot.

Pretty hard to let Ehlers or Pionk walk when we have just tied up $5.5 million in Miller/Schenn/Stan for next season... if Im an agent I look at those contracts for PB players as soon as Chevy says they cant offer more

Bookmarked. But, QQ - if we would have gone out and got a Strome, or other player of your choosing:

- what would it have cost?
- what would be the disparity between where we are going to finish this year (in terms of playoffs) and where we would with the acquisition.

Put your money where your mouth is.
I’m not the general manager. In Strome’s case the Blackhawks released him so I am guessing it wouldn’t have taken very much. Even if we forget 20/20 hindsight and accept Strome had disappointed, he was a restricted free agent with youth and upside that the team literally didn’t want. Has the jets swooped in with a low pick and got him, how would it look now?

Cozens is another player who may appear disappointing. But if players like that are available you have to try. It’s a significant area of need for the Jets. If we were rebuilding you can take your time but we’re not. We have a window that is tied to scheif and Helle.

If perfetti is the big piece that’s gets you a 2C with term then you do it every day. Because a middle six winger can be replaced a lot easier.

Nothing against chevy. But it’s literally his job. I don’t expect him to solve all the issues at the deadline. That’s a bad time to do it.

Pretty much. None of Lambert, Barlow strike me as bottom six roles players. Or at least they'll need to really work at their all around game to get there.

I think Yager and Chibrikov are well rounded enough they project to fit on different lines well.

That said, the Jets have shown they are willing to bring in and/or extend vets for picks if it means blocking prospects to compete.

Which is great, it's working out awesome for us. Only thing is we have a handful of projected cost efficient middle of the lineup guys. And they need lots of experience to get to the level of playing on a contender. Experience we can't get coaches to give them if we're contending and the culture we need for that.

If Ehlers is back, Lambert is completely expendable imo. He isn't a Lowry line guy or a 4th line PK guy. I picture a similar situation for Barlow who the Jets have already floated this year.

If Ehlers leaves and 2 of Appleton, Iafallo, Tanev come back, that basically blocks the bottom six to where mayyybe Chibrikov has a chance - if they give him the opportunity and not a vet through trade or UFA.

Yager and Salomonsson are the only guys who project to have a job open up for them during their ELC. And that could change at any moment too.

We are in a nice spot with flexibility to go a number of different ways at different positions. It does feel like we have the ability to deal a couple prospects, and 1st and a roster player if the right player ever did become available early enough in their career to not have trade protection.

Perfetti doesn't get you a 2C with term. If another team did that, they'd be turning around and looking for a 2C to play with Perfetti

I don't think that it's a coincidence that Cozens went for another 2C with term

I am happy with the job he has done to resign Helle and scheif. I’m happy with the job the coaching staff has done.

Caved in and embarrassed in the first round.

Oh I agree. The match wasn’t perfect. And don’t it at the deadline leads to clover paying. I was responding to people who thought it was crazy to consider trading Perfetti for a 2C.

But it’s still relevant that the jets have needed a 2C for a long time. And while they thought PLD solved that issue they did know he was the type of player who was going to go where he wanted to go to the degree he was able. And they traded him for players who did not fill that hole.

And since then they still haven’t. If we point that out does it mean we think it’s easy? No. It’s obviously very hard. But that’s his job. And as good as he’s been he’s also had some boneheaded moves.

I actually find it really hard to make trades on my PlayStation. For example they wanted a lot more for Schenn than he cost in reality.

Being a GM is hard. It’s too bad they’re paid so little for such a hard job.

That's on the players and coaches last year way more than Chevy. I have no idea what's going to happen this year in the playoffs but once again Chevy has put together another good team and its up to the players and coaches to execute.

Exactly. Buffalo was never accepting Cole for him as they have plenty of highly drafted young players on wing already. He's not a positional need for them especially as they moved Thompson to wing recently as well. They needed a center coming back. No idea why this conversation is still ongoing.

Instead of trying to trade Cole for a proven top 6 center with term (Something no team is going to do) we'd be best giving him a legit shot at the position next year. His all around game is at the point now where another year in the gym working on his strength and skating may lead to the team having an internal solution.

The same team that Chevy went out and did what you wanted and brought in a 2C for the run. How'd that work out? We had a number 1 caliber C in Dubois at center at 2C for a couple of playoff runs. That didn't work out any better.

It comes down to the core, they must carry the team to a cup. It won't matter how many 2C's Chevy brings in if our Core players continue to fail to get it done.

I would like to see the Jets do that with Perfetti next season too , at least in pre-season . Perfetti has had a good season this year and has really improved.

If Murat's article is any indication he's already a better top 6 forward then most contenders have on their second line and he's getting better all the time. I still expect him to be a top line two-way forward when it's all said and done. I'd prefer that to be at center but you'll never know unless you give him a legit and lengthy chance to do it.

Also at some point Scheifele will age out and will need two top 6 centers. We will need more then just Yager at center at some point.

I agree that waiting until the deadline to overpay for whatever is available isn’t a great option. It’s also indicative of a team that wasn’t good defensively. I’m not sure we’ve solved that issue either.

It’s easy for people who bristle at any criticism to point out the team is doing very well. But it’s also a fact that Names is not a 2C on any other team. Missing out on Nelson and pretending we never needed him anyway is silly.

The Jets not playing to their potential in the playoffs isn't the GM's fault, it's the players' fault

If you wanted to go a step farther, then blame the coaches. But if Chevy has assembled a team that has the potential to win based on how it's constructed, then he's done his job and it's out of his hands

This is a bit of a false dichotomy. The Unknown Poster is saying Chevy's being paid millions to figure this shit out - and we've known since PLD got traded that we need a 2C. Turn over every rock.

It's easy to sit here on the sidelines...well, yeah, but he's got the contacts and the Rolodex. Beat the bushes.

No GM would trade a 2C for Perfetti end of story because like you said "middle six winger can be replaced a lot easier"
If you have a good 2C you can put a bottom 6 winger and that 2C will make that bottom 6 winger look like a top 6 wingers.
In the glory years of the Oilers Sather did that ... put a bottom winger on Gretzky's line and then trade him when he had good numbers.
You think Chevy can make a trade as easy as X-Box NHL25?
Why did the Jets get so much for PLD?
Because thats the going for a good center. I know he didn't look good in LA but some of the blame has to go to the coaching staff giving him crappy wingers. Look how good he is doing with the Caps this year already career highs in assists and +28 and according to the Caps media he has been the best player for the Caps last 20 games. Also his linemates Protas and McMichaels are having their best season by the end of the season they should both double their point totals from last season.

We "missed out" on Nelson? Lou said in a presser that Colorado was Nelson's first choice.. Chevy never had a chance at him. Even if it came down to best offer on the table, I'm glad he didn't offer up one that would beat colorado's. It would have been 1st + Yager + another piece. That's way too much for a rental
