Then I absolutely support Chevy balking at the inclusion of Yager. I am sure he tried negotiating down by adding other picks and prospects to close that gap to no avail.

I think he did. Maybe Lambert was offered, but I honestly don’t see Chevy trading 20 year old Yager for 34 year old Nelson who would have been a pure rental. Not when this organization struggles to attract talent aside from the draft.
If Colorado blows it and gets eliminated in the 1st or 2nd round and Nelson walks on July 1st, there’ll always be some other players willing to sign there or waive to go there. Winnipeg, not so much.
As nice as it would have been to add Nelson, he’s no guarantee to push this team to the Promised Land.

The reality is it was likely taking a + to Yager anyways as Ritchie would be held in higher regard prospect wise. That's where things are just flat out looney and I'm sure Chevy hung up the phone.
The Isles were steadfast it seemed from not taking an offer built up with more picks and/or prospects. They wanted the biggest chip possible, and to their credit, they got it.
In the end, I'm very happy looking at Yager and Salo in the Jets' system on March 10th and avoiding that deal.
Yeah that was far to rich for us. The Avs have a good chance at keeping Nelson and I'm not sure he was as sure to stay with us.
It’s not trolling. It might have gone over heads. But it’s clearly meant that we had higher hopes for the deadline improving the teams chances of going to the cup final and that is less likely now. And that’s a fact as terrible as it might be.
I’m sure chevy has done a lot of exploring. One of these years maybe he will succeed.
Stastny would have stayed but jets offered a two year deal and Vegas offered three years. As it turned out jets traded for him again for that third year so they should have signed him in the first place.
Is Kupari still DTD? Gus is still in the box so there is a good chance he moves in but I would like to see Brad get a shot. Would be nice to get into one of those situations where a kid comes in and just juices the team down the stretch.

I would have been happy with Nelson, but things went off the rails price wise and that's where you need to fold your cards like Chevy did.
I still feel (pure conjecture on my part) that Chevy went in dangling Barlow and a 1st as the framework of an offer.
Most years that's getting it done or at most you are adding on a minor piece to get it over the finish line.
This year was just something different entirely with the supply vs demand of the market.
In Chevy's post-deadline interview it sure sounded like everything was on the table. The clock's ticking on the Jets core. Scheifele and Lowry turn 32 this month, and Hellebuyck follows in May. Pionk might walk. Ehlers might walk. They're 1st in the league, firing on all cylinders. You think Chevy's really worried about whether Yager turns into a legit C in 2 or 3 years?

it's funny how many teams are looking for center help around the league yet people act like it's going to be easy to acquire and wonder why were stuck paying for rentals.. like colorado a much more desirable place has spent years since kadri looking for a 2C and then had to end up paying that price for rental brock nelson...
we traded a 1st for stastny and tried to sign him he chose to go elsewhere
traded a 1st for hayes wasn't a good fit for either
traded for pld hoping he would be the long term solution but he immediately wanted out
traded for monahan and tried to sign him but he chose to go else where
does someone have a list of legit 2C's that have no trade protection and term that have been traded in the years of contention?

Yeah that's your typical rental price. B prospect and a 1st. But this year there was only a handful of teams who were looking to improve on their rosters. Lots of teams in the playoffs hunt didn't do much because of how much better the main horses are in the race.
It was basically just Florida, Toronto, Tampa, Washington in the east and Winnipeg, Dallas, Colorado, Edmonton and Vegas in the west. Washington and Vegas basically stood pat so there was really only 7 teams vying for TDL upgrades which makes it a heavy sellers market.
From recent times going back to summer 2022 it's basically Rantanen (wing but can play some C if needed), Nelson, Mittelstadt, PLD, Hertl, Monahan, Lindholm, ROR and Horvat.
Only 9 guys have been traded that could potentially fill a 2C or better role since summer of 2022. Some of them like Rantanen, Mittelstadt, PLD and Monahan have been traded multiple times.
There really isn't a lot of guys that can fill that role that become available.
I mean, I understand the premise of your post, but you and I both know he absolutely is worried if he projects to being a 2C, or at the very least a top-six contributor in the future for the Jets.
The org has always put a premium on higher caliber assets because as the posts above show it isn't exactly easy to acquire players to fit these roles. More often than not, you are taking on some form of baggage, whether it's injury history, age, attitude, etc. - these type of additions don't present themselves too often. Especially if you are Winnipeg. The current construction of the Jets top six speaks volumes if you look at who was drafted/acquired in trades vs. picked up in free agency.
Out of curiosity, in the case of Nelson, who is going to be 34 years old next season and a UFA, what were you comfortable giving up in a package to acquire him? Keep in mind, Yager and 1st likely wasn't going to be sufficient, especially seeing the return in the end, so there would need be to an add of value there for them to consider.

I could buy that but I wouldn't do Perfetti for Cozens. I'm not that sold on Cozens. And I wouldn't have done Perfetti for any of the old Cs who were being touted either.
Having failed to get the 2C we need, I was disappointed that we didn't do more to upgrade our D. Schenn may be a small improvement to our PK. I think he will be a liability otherwise and paired with the other liability on the 3rd pair could be a disaster.

I think his trade value is < the picks we traded or he would be gone.
I wasn't necessarily talking about him, but the other moves those teams made. It seems in general Stanley Cup teams trade for players who will make a noticeable impact, either adding to areas of strength or shoring up weaknesses.

This is why im so high on Yager.. I want him to turn out more than any other prospect
It's a bit difficult to figure out what Chevy's really saying since he equivocates on everything. But I really think he would've pulled the trigger on a 1st + Yager for Brock Nelson.
The vibe I got from reading his bafflegab tea leaves is that Nelson picked the Avs over the Jets...

There is still Toews as a possible add for next year. I doubt he comes in as a 2C, but he could easily take the 4C slot

Yeah I'd like to bring him in as a depth add if his fitness is up to snuff. But the good news is we can do one of those incentive deals for a player his age.
