I think he was solid, just didn't make us all that much better than Namestnikov.Yeah it's weird how people feel about Monahan as a Jet. I thought he was pretty solid.
It's not that Monahan was bad, just kind of a waste of a 1st rounder

This is my perspective. Monahan and Toffoli caused demotion of Namestnikov and Perfetti. Monahan helped the PP but I'm not sure he was worth a 1st since Namestnikov has been pretty effective.I think he was solid, just didn't make us all that much better than Namestnikov.

Yeah bc Perfetti barely scoring had nothing to do withThis is my perspective. Monahan and Toffoli caused demotion of Namestnikov and Perfetti. Monahan helped the PP but I'm not sure he was worth a 1st since Namestnikov has been pretty effective.
That's true, Perfetti got demoted before any trades. The writing on the wall became clear once he was on the 4th line.Yeah bc Perfetti barely scoring had nothing to do with
Also if he didn't fail At C... Namestnikov wouldn't have been C, which means no Monahan either.
Arniel is not looking like the kind of coach to ice any player early in the year. And it will be interesting to know what his input is as the Jets get closer to the deadline. He's got to work with a lot of these players through camp. Does he want to see Lambert, Chibrikov and Salomonsson on the team when the rosters get expanded after the trade deadline? Jets have the Cap space there. That's true, Perfetti got demoted before any trades. The writing on the wall became clear once he was on the 4th line.
Hopefully we can just let him play through it this year. He was not one of the players who struggled, when he did get in, against the Avs last April
I think Chevy should avoid a pure rental. He has some talented depth with pro experience in Salomonsson, Lambert and Chibrikov. If he wants to add, it should be a player with some term (like Nino), or a pure hockey trade to add a top-end 2C or top-4 D.Arniel is not looking like the kind of coach to ice any player early in the year. Nobody outside the 1st line (plus Morrissey and Brendan Dillon) scored more than 2 points. And they got caved in by Colorado's top line.Yeah bc Perfetti barely scoring had nothing to do with

I don't separate Samberg's success from Pionk's and they have been unquestionably the Jets best d-pairing this year. Pionk leading the defense in ES points is a testament to that. Arniel is a Pionk fan, going back to coaching him in New York, so I think he's safe, and probably extended.I think Chevy should avoid a pure rental. I think DeMelo is wobbling and Pionk isn't a great bet as a top-4. Arniel's system and Morrissey and Samberg are carrying the D. I think a good D with skating and size would really boost this D.
If the Jets get a v good 2C and Yager or Lambert are good enough, then there's the option of moving Lowry down to a terrific 4C as he ages.RE: 2C with term
I'd consider maybe looking at Frost from Philly...
Or if we knew for certain that Ehlers is gone after this year, maybe allocate his cap hit to Norris from Ottawa - of course the cap hit, term, and injury history are scary, but it might make him available for cheap in terms of trade value
Build a 2nd line around:
Lambert Norris Perfetti
with Yager coming up in 2 or 3 years to push into the middle six (maybe even top 6 as schief ages)
Interesting arniel doesn’t want to try names perfetti kupari, but, goes to tried iafallo in top 6.I don't separate Samberg's success from Pionk's and they have been unquestionably the Jets best d-pairing this year. But I agree with the first paragraph. You do wonder if Salomonsson could be more efficient than Melo, and quicker too. So the depth is there, in house, before you go looking elsewhere.
That 3LD spot is probably the one where you are not sure what's there. Heinola may win the job, but he's a complete unproven in the playoffs, where Stanley and Fleury have some playoff experienc.e. I think Stanley makes a lot of people cringe, but on home ice I think he can be used effectively, on the road I am not sure he can protected. And special teams get bigger in the playoffs so I think there's a need there, that Fleury in particular could fill, if he finds a comfort level with the team.
2C is a position the Jets shouldn't be trading for if they believe in Yager, or Lambert to fill those holes next year. The cost of a 2C in the NHL is generally high, as previous trades have indicated. For rentals Granlund is the only one who has no trade protection, and I am not sure he would be any sort of answer to improvement. Namestnikov and Ehlers have chemistry. Perfetti is still trying to fit in on this line, and he needs some playoff experience. I really wonder about plugging Kupari in the middle of Ehlers and Namestnikov, and that becomes a line you can play in every zone, so that Ehlers gets more impact in the playoffs. And maybe you plug Barron in the middle of Iafallo and Perfetti in a more limited 4th line, Or trade for a second tier player to fill that role. Or promote Lambo.
Term players come at an even higher cost than rentals, if they are impactful (Poile did Chevy a solid with Nino) and I am not sure the Jets have the trade capital anymore. Can't put all your chips in every year in the playoffs. Last year was costly for 3 home games in the playoffs. So I agree that Lambert and Salomonsson should be on the playoff roster this year, and there is the cap space to get them regular games after the deadline, where you could start to use some load management.

The Jets just traded Mc Groarty for a smaller more skilled player. There is 0 guarantee that Vilardi is going to re-sign long term at this point, and Lowry and Barron are 2 years away from UFA, and Nino 3, that's a lot of size to replace down the road, and you know they won't all stay beyond that point. So you have Barlow's draft class, which produced some big boys, including Nehring, Julien and Levis once they all fill out, and Walton, who was well behind Barlow in playing time and usage in the rookie tourney, coming up the ranks, hopefully a few break through to fill some heavy roles.Personally I’d still try using Barlow as a trade chip to improve the defense. Sure he’s scoring more now, but I don’t see him as an integral part going forward.
Wish they’d add Stanley to move him out, but I don’t think that will happen. Because of this, I can see Villle being thrown into a package with Barlow.
Stanley at best should be #8, Fleury #7
I think Lowry becomes a checking line winger before he ever becomes a 4C. The guy is the heart and soul of the defensive identity of the Jets. As a winger with less centre responsibility he can still get that heavy forecheck that is key to possession. I don't see a lot of better defensive players who can handle top NHL forwards in this organization, from a development standpoint. I would say the Jets demise starts when Lowry is no longer a capable 3C, taking the hard home matchups that makes everyone else's matchups easier. Maybe Kupari could take that role, if he stays long enough. If the Jets get a v good 2C and Yager or Lambert are good enough, then there's the option of moving Lowry down to a terrific 4C as he ages.
If they don’t move Barlow or a 1st (which I believe most around here don’t want them to) then they’re not really going to get a legitimate upgrade on Stanley at 3LD. At this point I’d prefer keeping the 1st.The Jets just traded Mc Groarty for a smaller more skilled player. Barlow won't be traded. Once you get in the organization, start playing games for the Moose, the team doesn't just pivot in the development process, for a temporary fix. They've got the time and the resources to improve the players they draft.
Heinola was signed to a 2 year deal, and I think the Jets want him to play that out, because he's got a skillset that can help the team, and takes the pressure off the development of Salomonsson, who the Jets absolutely need to become a top 4 d-man, in the future. It's conceivable, and quite possible that all 9 of the d-men currently with the Jets are back next year.
Arniel was pleased about the Jets depth on defense going into this year, and to have Coghlan look decent in his first start adds more depth. I think there's room for a shot blocker/PK type on the left side with Fleury currently being the best option to replace Samberg, and maybe the Jets want another guy who could step up on that side, if Stanley can't step up or stay healthy. Right side looks solid. You get what you get here in Winnipeg. Pionk, De Melo and Miller all signed to play here. There's probably 60 to 70 good d-men in the league with trade protection that has Winnipeg on the no-fly list.
I'm really hoping that this team doesn't put Chevy in a position where he has to leverage the future hard at the trade deadline, and that probably means being mediocre, when you have such a narrow window. I'm not sure the Jets will keep pace with the Wild in terms of prospects, and Nashville, Chicago, St. Louis and Utah are going to build theirs up, and be able to add in free agency, while the Jets remain a perennial playoff team trying to find the right players to rent for a run. I think the farther Chevy goes down that hole, the harder it will be for him to get the team out once it hits its summit, which is conceivably not that far off in the horizon. The Jets may need more forward help, but at what cost? Does Chevy really believe he has a winner out of a core group that has won 7 playoff games in its last 5 playoff appearances? Is there one player out there who can change all the fortunes?
